‘Tis the Season of Lists

Holiday season is a great time for lists. People are making grocery lists, greet-ing card lists and gift lists. There are even rumors of someone making a list of people who are naughty and nice and checking it twice. If it is not already on your to-do list, you should take some time to review your Chapter’s books and records so that you are all set for tax filing after the first of the year.

If a Chapter has paid any individual or non-incorporated entity $600 or more for services during the year-end date of Dec. 31, the Chapter must file Form 1099-MISC and 1096. Form 1099-Misc is a multi-part form that can be purchased at any office supply store. To correctly fill out this form, you will need to have the name, address and tax identification number of the person or entity you paid at least $600 to during the year. Copy B of this form must be given to the recipient by Jan. 31. Copy A must be filed with the IRS by Feb. 28, and Copy C should be kept by the Chapter. Form 1096 is a summary return and must accompany Copy A of the 1099-MISC to the IRS. In order to fill out this form, you just need the Chapter name, address, tax identification number and number, and type of form you are filing.

If your Chapter has a year-end date of Dec. 31, you have until May 15 to file form 990-N (e-Postcard) with the IRS. This form must be filed electronically. There is a link on the RSES Website that will take you to the 990-N (e-Post-card) filing site. In the tax information section, select the blue link that says “Click Here” and you will be connected with the 990-N (e-Postcard) filing site.

The IRS has recently started sending letters to Chapters if they have failed to file the 990-N postcard for a particular year. The letter states that you must now file a paper copy of the form 990-EZ for that year. If you need assistance in completing this form, please contact Headquarters and we will be happy to help.

Geothermal-based Series Finalized

RSES’ Understanding Geothermal Ground Heat Exchangers is the third title to be released in the RSES Sustainability Series, making the geothermal-based series now complete.

Understanding Geothermal Ground Heat Exchang-ers, written by John Clapp, focuses on the design and installation of the ground heat exchanger (GHX) in a geothermal heat pump (GHP) system and provides the steps required for a contractor to execute the basic design of a residential or light commercial GHX, apply it to a layout, installation, testing and more. Study topics include: preliminary project planning; vertical GHX design; vertical GHX

piping; piping for building entry and GHP equipment connection; testing flow and pressure in GHX piping systems; and more.

Each manual in the three-book series may be purchased as a hard copy or in PDF for immediate download. To place an order, visit the RSES Online Store.

Registration is Open

You can register now for the 20th Annual HVACR & Me-chanical Conference for Education Professionals, which will be held March 9-11 at the Conference Center at the Maritime Institute, Linthicum, Md. RSES Journal - Magazine Requests for Trade Shows

Did you know you can request is-sues of RSES Journal to utilize as an RSES promotional tool at local events and trade shows? Well you can! However, to curb costs, the staff limits the number of issues that are ordered each month for Headquarters. In order to ensure we have magazines for your event, please allow a minimum of two months prior to your event to place a magazine order. In addition to giving us the opportunity to order a larger quantity of magazines for your event, this grace period al-lows us to ship the magazines in a more cost-effective manner.

If you are interested in placing an order, contact Lori Kasallis.

Fluke Rewards Students

Fluke Corp. announces the finalists in the Fluke Connect Student Contest, which tests the skills, innovation, and business applica-tion of student teams enrolled in two-and four-year colleges, universities, trade/tech schools and apprenticeship programs. The finalist teams include: Brigham Young University Women in Manufacturing Team, whose project is live testing the tempera- ture on friction bit joining welds; California Polytechnic State University Power and Energy Society, for con- ducting a commercial energy audit; University of Kentucky Solar Car Team, for live testing performance param- eters on a solar car; San Jacinto College North, for improving the efficiency of charging AC sys- tems; and Western Iowa Technology School, for troubleshooting intermittent electrical issues in wind turbines.

A panel of six judges evaluated the teams on their technical skills, innovation and creativity, the business value of their projects, and the presentation skills of the team.

Final projects are due on Dec. 5 when they will be evaluated by the same panel of judges as well as voted on by the public on Fluke’s Facebook page. The winners, who will be announced on Dec. 15, will be determined by which team made the biggest impact using the Fluke Connect system—75% of the decision will come from the judges and 25% from the public vote.

Three members of the first-place team and their adviser will receive a paid trip to Fluke headquarters in north Seattle to spend a day meeting with Fluke executive and engineering leadership, tour Fluke engineering and manufacturing, and see the Boeing manufacturing facility and Future of Flight Aviation Center next door. The school’s department will win $1,000 worth of Fluke tools, and the Fluke Connect tools used in the contest submission, worth approximately $2,500.

November Poll Error

Due to technical errors, the Novem-ber poll never posted for website visitors. Because of this, RSES Journal will be reposting the No-vember poll for December, which is asking for your reaction to the EPA’s 2015–2019 R-22 allocation rule released in late October.

Be sure to visit the RSES homep-age to cast your vote!

MSAC Hotline Upgrade

In February 2015, RSES Journal readers will be treated to a new col-umn written exclusively by Members of the Manufacturers’ Service Advi-sory Council (MSAC). Representing more than 25 HVACR manufactur-ers, the MSAC features a plethora of technical experience and industry know-how. The column, which will often be published as an accompa-niment to the traditional questions/answers that are seen each month, gives each Member a platform to voice issues related to their areas of expertise in the industry.

Of course, we will continue to field readers’ questions to appropriate MSAC Members! So, if you have one that that you cannot seem to answer, e-mail the MSAC.

January RSES Journal Features

Don’t miss the January 2015 issue of RSES Journal, which will tenta-tively feature articles on: AHR Expo Preview; HRVs/ERVs; Automation; CO2 Systems; and Start Components & Compres- sor Life.

Of course, you can also find the lat-est industry and Society news, Trou-bleshooting, CEH Corner, MSAC Hotline, and more in the monthly issue of RSES Journal!

What is thermal conductivity and how does it relate to geo-thermal heat exchangers?

This manual focuses on the design and installation of the ground heat exchanger (GHX) in a geothermal heat pump system. It spells out the steps required for a contractor to execute the basic design of a resi-dential or light commercial GHX, and to carry that design forward into the layout, installation, testing and operational phases of the system.
