Mustangs rally back to keep win streakVARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL

Madisonville had tocharge from behind in or-der to go to a seven-gamewinning streak last week.

The varsity Mustangswere at Franklin Dec. 17taking on the Lions in non-district competition.Franklin put Madis-onville’s victorious run injeopardy early on aftertaking a 19-11 lead in thefirst quarter. The Mus-tangs bounced back,though, and led 36-32 athalftime.

For most of the secondhalf, the Lions kept withintwo possessions of theMustangs’ score. Howev-er, Madisonville held for a66-59 win.

Marcus Tyler dominat-ed the scoreboard with 35points, accompanied byfive rebounds and four

steals. C.J. Dottin scoredeight points and hadmatching stats of three re-bounds, three steals andthree assists. Grant Smithmirrored seven points withseven rebounds andnabbed two steals. BrentMcCloud came away withfive points, five rebounds,five steals and seven as-sists. Ladarius Merchanthad four points, threesteals and five rebounds.Charkeith Wiley’s night in-cluded three points, ninerebounds, one steal andtwo assists. James Holidayand Dex Shiver each hadtwo points and three re-bounds, and Holidayadded an assist. JaylenManley grabbed one re-bound, two steals and twoassists. Davodrick Rosscontributed two steals andan assist. The team was 7-of-8 in free throws in thefourth quarter.

“There’s somethingspecial about these kids,”said Brian Thurmond,Madisonville head boysbasketball coach, earlierthis month. “If they canpass and do what theyneed to do, this can be oneof the better teams thatI’ve ever coached andMadisonville has everseen. They handle adversi-ty real well. I’m reallyproud of them.”

Madisonville scheduledone more game before thewinter break and traveledto Milano Dec. 21. TheMustangs won’t have verylong to rest as they’ll be atthe Lovelady tournamentDec. 27-29. Madisonvillehas a first-round gamescheduled for 3 p.m.Thursday versus Kennard.Their first game after thetournament is slated forJan. 3 at home againstCayuga.

A rematch from a girlsbasketball tournamentearlier this season provid-ed North Zulch’s varsitygirls with another districtwin.

The Lady Bulldogswere at Dime Box Dec. 18for a District 27-A match-up against the LadyHorns. The two districtfoes had faced off alreadyon Dec. 1 in Dime Box’stournament when NorthZulch won, 28-20.

In last Tuesday’s secondengagement between thetwo teams, the game wasclose in the first quarter.Dime Box had a one-point

edge after eight minutes,8-7. However, the LadyBulldogs ratcheted up thescore in the second quar-ter and led 25-15 at thebreak.

Each team scoredabout evenly in the secondhalf. In the end, though,North Zulch added a fewmore points to its advan-tage and won with the finalscore of 39-26.

Sam Tobias led with 16points. Erin Diserensscored 11 points. AveryBillings entered doubledigits with 10 points.

Absent from the courthas been leading scorerBrittney Wiese. Wiese isout of action at the mo-ment due to an injury suf-

fered earlier this month.Ron Howard, NorthZulch’s head girls basket-ball, has commended histeam for stepping up andcompensating for the lossin recent weeks, includinghis seniors Tobias andBillings.

“Both seniors steppedup in the absence of Brit-tney,” Howard said oftheir game against Ri -chards two weeks ago.“Erin Diserens and Am-ber Filoteo both playedgreat defense.”

Howard added thisweek that Wiese will hope-fully be cleared to play bythe first Tuesday game af-ter the winter break, whichwill be Jan. 8 at Calvert.

In varsity boys basketball, Sean VanCour, seen herelaying up a ball earlier this season, and his teammatestraveled to Dime Box Dec. 18, attempting to extendtheir district record to 2-0. However, Dime Box gotthe victory, 57-39. The Bulldogs’ next scheduledgames will be at the Buffalo tournament Thursdayand Friday, Dec. 27-28.
