Headlands Highlights July 2017

We are only part-way through July but so many fantastic events have already taken

place. We hope you enjoy reading about them in our final edition of Headlands

Highlights for this academic year.

AIM HIGH. WORK HARD. HAVE FUN.

Goodbye Rhubarb and Custard - we will miss you!

This term our Reception children have been learning about animals, growth and change over time. As part of this topic they

have looked after their own ducklings; Rhubarb and Custard! The children loved watching them develop, from when they

hatched out of their eggs to the time when they had to say goodbye; they were almost fully grown and had outgrown their

pen. The children helped to care for them by changing their food and water every day, cleaning out their cage and ensuring

they didn't disappear when they were outside! It was a lovely experience for both children and adults in the unit.

Rockstar Wrangle

Miss Hall took our 3 fastest TTRockstar players from Year 6 to a Rock Wrangle in Leeds. Children from 50 schools took part to battle it out and be crowned the awesome, supreme ‘Rock Legend’! Zoran, Mustafa and Paige were entered into heat 1 where they had to complete 11 rounds of TTRockstars for times tables 2-12. The 4 fastest children from each of the three heats went through to the semi-final. Our children performed wonderfully and just missed out on getting through to the semi-final!

As well as competing, the children got to take part in Maths games, an air guitar competition and had a rocking photograph taken!

The children were fantastically well behaved and did the school proud!

Well done Finlay!

We loved receiving this fantastic photo of

Finlay in Y4. He is pictured here receiving

a trophy at his football presentation

evening. Finlay plays for the West End

Park All Stars disability team. Your skills

are really developing Finlay - we think

your team are

lucky to have you!

Keep up the hard

work!

We loved it at

Headlands - thanks

for looking after us so

well Reception.

Headlands Highlights Y3 Pedestrian Training

Year 3 have recently been visited by a number of road

safety officers. The children worked alongside the officers

to consider the important rules they must consider when

they are crossing the road. Their training involved

classroom activities as well as practical exercises out on

the street. Much of their practical training involved

discussing and finding safe places to cross.

All of the children listened carefully to the visitors and we

feel sure that they know how to keep themselves safe

when out and about. Well done Year 3!

Bloom and Grow

Some of our Year 5 pupils enjoyed an afternoon outdoors at

Roberttown Grange. They designed, decorated and

personalised some large plant pots before meeting pupils

from other local schools at the grange. Alongside some of the

residents, the children filled the pots with compost and

planted a range of bedding plants in them. They have left the

colourful pots in the grounds of the grange for all of the

residents to enjoy. Look out for them next time you pass

there!

Fairtrade Football Funday

On Thursday 6th July, School Councillors from Years 4 and 5

were invited to Honley High School to take part in the

‘Fairandfunky’ Football Fun Day. Whilst at the event, children

took part in football and Fairtrade focused games, activities

and co-operative learning. Children learnt the importance of

buying and using Fairtrade goods. The highlight of the day

was when they made a football out of newspaper, plastic

carrier bags and string. Football fun was had by all!

Y5 Pupil Enquiry

In our April edition of

Headlands Highlights you

may remember us telling

you about a group of Y5

pupils who had conducted a pupil enquiry in school

alongside Tina Warden (Learning Consultant).

Tina recently returned to the school again and supported

the pupils in carrying out a work scrutiny which involved

looking at the work in children’s exercise books. On

Thursday 13th July, the Y5 pupils attended the Governors’

Children and Families Committee Meeting and presented

their findings about what learning looks like at Headlands.

The governors were incredibly appreciative of the

children’s efforts and found their presentation very

informative. Our Chair of Governors, Mr Stone, praised

the children for remaining focussed and professional

throughout. Well done Y5!

FOH Discos

Thank you to Friends of Headlands for once again organising

our Summer Discos. The children had a wonderful time on

Wednesday 5th July and looked amazing dressed in their

bright, colourful Summer clothes. The addition of a

beach-themed photo booth made the event extra special and

the children loved posing with their friends in front of the

camera!

Y5 Prayer Space

On Monday 3rd July, Year 5

participated in a ‘Prayer Space’

activity with Yvonne Froud. The

children completed a number of

tasks which enabled them to

reflect upon both personal and

world wide issues. The activities

allowed them to remember someone special, pray for

refugees, think about what they have to be thankful for

as well as their personal life aspirations.

All the children thoroughly enjoyed the morning.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Recently, Nursery had a fantastic time at their Teddy Bear’s Picnic!

They all brought in their teddies and spent the morning and afternoon in the

Jubilee Woods. They played games and had a lovely picnic together.

Well done Lola!

We were so impressed to

hear about the busy month

that Lola in Y2 has had.

Not only did she get a 90%

Distinction for her Primary

Tap Exam but she has also

been awarded her Level 1

Personal Survival Award for

Swimming.

Well done Lola - these are

amazing achievements!

PC Whitehouse

On Monday, PC Whitehouse visited

Year 6 to educate them about different

types of medicines and drugs including

their uses and dangers.

Alcohol and tobacco

were also discussed.

The session was very

informative and the

pupils listened

carefully to the

advice that PC

Whitehouse gave

them.

Ambulance Pull

We were amazed to hear about Jasmine-Mae’s efforts to

raise money for Dewsbury Ambulance Charities. Jasmine, in

Y5, and her mum

recently joined a group

of people to pull an

ambulance for 8 miles

through Batley and

Dewsbury. The pull took

an exhausting 4 hours

and Jasmine and the

team raised over

£1,200.

Well done Jasmine!

Les Miserables

Our children in Years 4, 5 and

6 were recently made aware

of an exciting project coming

to the Batley and Spen area.

A team of West End

professionals are coming to

the area to stage a once in a

lifetime version of Jo Cox’s favourite show ‘Les Miserables’.

The team are looking for 16 young children, aged 9-11, to

join the project. As a school, we liaised with parents and

nominated 2 Headlands pupils, Monique Powell and Eliza

Stone, for auditions on Monday 17th July. We are ecstatic

that both of the girls were successful and have been offered

2 of the lead female roles. They are going to be very busy

rehearsing and performing over the Summer. We are so

proud of them both and wish them lots of luck!

We were also delighted to hear that one of our ex-pupils,

Abbie Hardcastle, has been given a part in the production

team. Her mum told us that

Abbie is gaining so much

experience from working with

such highly-skilled producers

and it has changed her outlook

on life completely; she now

knows exactly what she would

like to pursue as a career.

This is great news!

Great Yorkshire Show

Over the past few months, the Gardening club have worked

extremely hard on a competition diary to show the journey

of their ‘Bee Friendly’ planter. As a result of their hard

work, Headlands made it into the finals. On Wednesday 12th

July, 12 children were invited to the Great Yorkshire Show.

The children and staff had a tremendous day out and took

part in a range of activities from candle making to holding a

range of creepy crawlies! As well as this, the children got

the opportunity to see a range of animals, including

Norman the cow! Headlands came in the top 12 overall for

their planter - next year we are going for gold!

Orla doesn’t look

quite as impressed

with the stick insects

as Grace and Olivia

do!

Summer Fair

We need to express further thanks to the FOH Team for also organising our fantastic Summer Fair. A great evening was had

by all and it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying and supporting the event. Approximately £1,500 was raised

which will be used to help enrich curriculum activities within school - the staff and children are so appreciative of

everyone’s amazing efforts! Thank you!

Fun in Filey

On Tuesday 11th July, the staff and children in Year 2 enjoyed a trip to Filey. It wasn’t the sunny visit they were hoping for

but it’s clear to see that they certainly made the most of their time at the beach. The children had so much fun playing on

the sand with their friends, digging holes and building sandcastles! As always, they really impressed their teachers and

other members of the public with their fantastic behaviour!

GOODBYE YEAR 6 - WE WILL MISS YOU! July is always a time of great happiness in school when we reflect upon all of the wonderful things that the staff and children

have achieved throughout the year. However, it can be a time of sadness too because our Year 6 pupils leave us to make

their transition to high school. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of our Year 6 pupils and it has been a pleasure

to watch them mature into the talented, caring individuals that they are today. We know that their new schools are going to

be so impressed with them and we are sure that you will join us in wishing them lots of luck for the future - school won’t be

the same without them!

With the help of the pupils in Year 5, they performed brilliantly during their production of ‘The Imaginary Diary of a Wimpy

Kid’. They delighted the audiences with their humour, singing, rapping, dancing and (not so amazing) accents! We’ve shared

some of the cast photos with you below as well as some photos from their end of year bowling trip.

REACH FOR THE STARS YEAR 6!

Headlands Highlights Continued….

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP!

The pupils at Headlands are so fortunate that the Friends of

Headlands Team work hard to plan and organise events for us all to

look forward to every year.

Over the last 12 months the children have enjoyed the school fairs,

discos and the monsters ball. In addition to this, the Year 6 pupils had

lots of fun on their special leavers bowling trip. Within the last year,

FOH have also supported enrichment events such as the popular

Maths Day, continued to develop our amazing woodland area and

fundraised for new equipment for the children to play with during

break times.

As we are sure you will understand, any PTA association is only as

strong as the people who contribute to it. Unfortunately, we are

becoming increasingly concerned about the long term sustainability

of our PTA. Over the next year or so the FOH Team is likely to

become much smaller as a number of the parents who currently

make huge contributions will no longer have children at Headlands

School. It would be an enormous shame if the FOH Team ceased to

exist and unfortunately school staff would not have the time to plan

and organise the events mentioned above.

The FOH Team are desperate for new members who can volunteer

regularly, contribute fresh ideas and who are keen to learn and take

on additional responsibilities in the future.

If you think you might be able to help in

2017/18 please express your interest by

contacting Mrs Drummond in school.

We can’t wait to hear from you!

SAVE THE DATE!

School opens again to pupils on Tuesday

5th September

THANK YOU

You may remember that a few months ago we wrote to you

requesting donations of good quality books to enhance our

KS2 library. We wrote to you again in June to say thank you as

we had received almost 100 books. You have continued to

clear out cupboards and shelves at home and now we have

over 300 books to add to our library. We have been

completely overwhelmed by your support and the children

are really going to appreciate the ever-expanding range of

texts available to them. We would like to take this

opportunity to say an enormous thank you again. If any of you

are having a sort out over the holidays and find more that you

would like to donate then please keep them coming!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Thank you to all who have helped contribute

to our 2016/17 editions of Headlands

Highlights. We would like to take this

opportunity to wish all Headlands families a

very safe and happy Summer holiday!
