Here are some icebreakers to try with your group:

2 truths and a lie: The students will say two truths about themselves and one lie. The rest of the group must try to determine which one is the lie.

Page 10: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Categories: Ask a group of students to organize themselves from smallest to largest; shortest to tallest; favourite colours alphabetically… This must all be done without saying a word.

Pompadour

Beach ball: Each student takes turns passing the beach ball around. When a student catches it, they must answer the question their right thumb lands on.

Chatter bots: -Ask participants to pair up with a buddy and introduce themselves -Have participants select one of two categories – Autobots or

Deceptacons. (The pair has to consist of one or the other. They both can’t choose the same thing).

-Have all Autobots form a circle with their backs toward the center of the circle.

-Have all Deceptacons face their partners in a larger circle outside the Autobots

-OL’s will call out topics for the transformers to discuss-After 30 seconds an OL will say “ Transform” and each transformer

will rotate once to the right to start a new discussion with another participant

-Continue this until each person has had a chance to meet each other

Now that your icebreakers are complete it is time for the power point presentation.

This year there is only one student session to be presented.

Make sure you review the PowerPoint presentation. You will find these slides in your manual

Page 14: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Recommendations before you start!

- Introduce yourselves! (Name, Program etc.)

- Make sure to encourage students to write questions down during the presentation. There will be a chance to ask them at the end.– Often times the questions they need answered

will be addressed on a later slide This allows you to maintain control of the time factor and

will allow more discussion at the end

Page 15: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Student Superhero Session

During the presentation – Try not to read off the power point screen.

Makes you appear unprepared To avoid this, read the slides before hand

– Remember to divide the slides up before you begin Talk to your group members and decide how the

presentation will run (you will have time for this when you meet in the morning, but make sure you remember and follow it!)

– Do not talk over your group members. You need to be a united front and show respect for one another

How was that??

What type of methods did you use to spice up the slides??

Page 21: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Student Superhero Session

Some things you can do to spice up your presentation are:– Insert personal experience when talking about a

slide. Students often relate more to your experiences

rather then dry reading off the slide – Be passionate about what you are talking about

If you are excited that will ripple down and make them excited.

Clickers

Students will have the chance to experience how clickers are used by answering questions throughout the presentation. Clickers will be available to you in your Dillon Hall presentation room.  It is the OL’s responsibility to return ALL of the borrowed clickers.  Someone will pick them up from each student session before you leave for Advising or the Leader Meeting room.

Page 23: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

After Presenting Make sure to have them fill out the evaluations

– NOTE: There are two evaluations to fill out General Evaluation & Student Evaluation

Have students fill out Alumni forms and hand them back into you

Explain what will be happening the rest of the day

Direct them to their advising locations

Page 24: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Communicating With Your Fellow Hero

Now that you have finished the power point it is time to invite questions. – After inviting questions, don’t rush ahead if no one

asks a question Allow the students to gather their thoughts

– When answering the question direct your remarks to the entire group

Page 25: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Communicating With Your Fellow Hero

When Answering Questions Keep focused

– Don’t loose track and continue to go off on a tangent Keep responses 10-40 seconds, too short may

appear abrupt, longer answers appear too elaborate You may receive off the wall questions…don’t let

them sidetrack you. Answer them to the best of your ability– Do not make the student feel stupid– If you don’t know ask another OL

Page 26: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Communicating With Your Fellow Hero

I HAVE A QUESTION????

A student asks a question in the middle of the presentation…How would you handle this???

Page 27: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Communicating With Your Fellow Hero

Answer: If the question is about the topic

– Keep your answer clear and concise If the question is off topic

– “Great question” we will be speaking about this later on in the presentation (if you know it is) or “Great question” we will come back to it later on so your question can be better answered

Page 28: Head Start 2008 “Be Your Own Superhero” Student Session

Pay attention to the message you send with your body language
