Chewing-Chewing Muscles break down food for the body

to absorb. -All facial muscles (chewing and facial muscles)

are paired with the exception of the platysma, frontails, orbicularis oris, and occipitals.

Page 4: Head and Neck Skeletal Muscles

Frontalis (Facial)

-Runs from the cranial aponeurosis to the eyebrow skin. -Allows the raising of eyebrows for expression and forehead movement.

Occipitalis

The Occipitalis pulls the scalp back.

Orbicularis Oculi (Facial)Fibers run in circles around the eyeball

Allows you to blink, squint, and wink.

Has many nerve receptors to assist with reaction time in blinking.

Buccinator (Facial/ Chewing)

Hybrid between Facial and Chewing muscleFacial because it pulls the cheek to flatten it, like your whistling.

Chewing because it helps to hold food in place between teeth.

Zygomaticus-goes from the cheek bone to the corner of the mouth.

-it raises the corner of the mouth up words, as if smiling .

CHEWING MUSCLES

Page 9: Head and Neck Skeletal Muscles

MasseterRuns between the mandible and the zygomatic processes.

Elevates the mandible to close the jaw.

Page 10: Head and Neck Skeletal Muscles

Temporalis Fan-shaped muscle that overlaps the temporal bone.

It is between the mandible and helps the masseter in closing the jaw.

Neck Muscles

Platysma Covers the anterior neck, as a single sheet.

Runs from the chest to the bottom of the mouth

It pulls the muscles downward to frown.

Sternocleidomastoid(ster no-kil do-mastoid)

Two headed muscle, one coming from the sterum and oen coming from the clavicle.

Fuse into temporal bone

These muscles are responsible for bowing and tilting the head.
