FRANCE: THE FIRST ctc.rb TRANSPORTED BY HELICOPTER

Recently one of our ctc.rb compact transformer substations was transported by helicopter from Aillons (894 m) to Mont Pelat (1543 m), located in north-west Provence.

Since 2011 the utility ErDF has been undertaking development work on the medium-voltage electrical network in the heart of Bauges. The substation that belongs to ErDF, will power an antenna for telephone transmission and the ski station Aillons-Margériaz, the first in the Alps.

A delicate operation

To guarantee maximum safety this manoeuvre was carried out using strict protection measures. To do so, a Super Puma civil transport helicopter was used, which is normally used for sea rescue or to access off-shore oil rigs.

This project will continue throughout 2015 where ErDF intends to bury 24 km of electrical network in the municipalities of Châteauneuf, Saint-Pierre-d’Albigny, Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte, St. Aillon Reina and Aillon-le-Jeune.

POLAND: WE HAVE OBTAINED THE TENDER FOR 650 TRANSFORMERS

Ormazabal has achieved the second of the batches of 650 distribution transformers that make up part of the project “Reduction of electric energy losses” for PGE Dystrybucja S.A, one of the largest utilities in Poland.

This project began in 2011 with the purpose of reducing electric energy losses in the Warsaw area. It was at this time when Ormazabal delivered the first batch of 650 distribution transformers.

After the success achieved, a second batch has been awarded to us, valued at 8.5 M Zloty (approx. €2 M), which includes the supply of 650 distribution transformers of different powers. 40, 63, 100, 160, 250, 400 and 630 kVA .

Ormazabal began life in Poland in 2003, focusing its business on the sales of medium-voltage switchgear and distribution transformers. Ever since then we have supplied more than 3000 transformers to Energa, around 1600 to ENEA and more than 1300 to PGE, all leading utilities in Poland. Among our most prominent projects in Poland are the Margonin and Marszewo wind farms.

Since 2012, and thanks to the purchase of the transformer substation factory Zakład Produkcyjny in Pyskowice, we have been capable of offering comprehensive, prefabricated concrete transformer substation solutions to our customers.

FRANCE: SUIPPES MILITARY CAMP

After participating in the first project with the military in eastern France in 2012, where we installed 4 ormapack compact transformer substations and a preforma.pf.4 monoblock transformer substation, we are going to deliver a second phase as part of the project to extend the training installations owned by the French army in Châlons en Champagne.

The camp, named Suippes, with a surface area of 13,500 hectares, is one of the largest in France. It is divided into different segments which each require a secure electrical network. The project required an electrical system to be designed, in the event of power loss in a segment, capable of locating the fault and restoring connection to the network.

The supply will have five, fully-equipped ormapack, transformer substations, which address the automatic-management needs of the ring and the monitoring of the system required by the army. The order was rounded off with the supply of a distribution transformer for auxiliary services and the installation of optical fiber communications.

BELGIUM: EURELECTRIC, THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC

We participated in the event “The future is electric”, which took place on the 10 and 11 September in Brussels.

Coinciding with the launch of the European Parliament year, Eurelectric, the association of the electricity industry in Europe, organised this event in order to present to Europe’s parliamentarians the innovations relating to electrical networks and the foundations that are being put in place in order to, in the future, bring these closer to the needs of the customers: smart metering applications, electrical vehicles, etc.

The event began with a speech from Johannes Teyssen, the President of Eurelectric and CEO of E.on, which primarily focused on climate, innovation and customers.

This event had an exposition area visited by hundreds of people, where in addition to Ormazabal, there were also representatives of CEZ, EDF, Edison, ENEL, E.on, Landis + Gyr, RWE, and SSE. At the same time, a series of debates took place on key energy issues. Our Global Marketing Director, Volkan Ozsokmen, took part in one of these, named “How electricity can change your life”; together with representatives of E.on and EDF, and explained how Ormazabal provides innovative solutions in areas such as distributed generation and short-term load outlook.

Many news and television agencies attended the event including Bloomberg, Arte, Argus, etc. The parliamentarian for the Basque Nationalist Party, Izaskun Bilbao, visited our stand and reported in her blog “Europe according to IBB” on the interview that she had with Guillermo Amann, Advisor to the President of Velatia.

SPAIN: WE HOSTED THE WG CIGRE B3.37 MEETING

We were the hosts of the WG CIGRE B3.37 meeting “Internal arc effects in Medium Voltage switchgear (1 - 52 kV) - mitigation techniques” that took place in our Research and Technological Centre (CIT) located in Boroa, Biscay.

In addition to Ormazabal representatives, in attendance at the meeting were various manufacturers of medium-voltage switchgear (ABB, Siemens, Schneider, Driescher-Wegberg, S&C, Hitachi, Laborelec, PNXA) and the utilities ESKOM (South African) and HAFSLUND (Norway).

After the meeting, the attendees had the chance to visit the installations of our Research and Technological Centre (CIT) whose aim is to identify, acquire and diffuse product or process technologies in Ormazabal which, having been identified as strategic, must be incorporated into the development of our new products and processes.

The most prominent features of our Research and Technological Centre are the HPL (High power laboratory) and the UDEX (Experimentation unit):

HPL

At the High power laboratory (HPL) experiments and tests can be carried out to develop products that are safer for persons and goods, which contribute to improving the quality of the electrical supply and to sustainable development.

The power generation required for the testing is produced using a 2500 MVA short-circuit power generator (SCG). The tests can be carried out at 50 or 60 Hz.

UDEX

It consists of a large medium-voltage network for real-time experimentation, that is configurable and independent with more than 15 km of underground cable and 450 m of overhead line that enables the development and testing of new technologies, products and services in a safe and controlled environment. All of this places us in the highest bracket on a worldwide scale with regards to research and development capabilities. The feature that makes this unit unique in global terms is that it can be powered by the high-power generator of the laboratory itself.

MALAYSIA: ORMAZABAL STRENGTHENS TIES WITH TNB

Recently a significant representation of Ormazabal, led by Enrique López, General Director for Asia, Jorge Gonzalez, General Director of Ormazabal, and the President of Velatia, Javier Ormazabal, held a meeting in Malaysia with the country’s most important utility, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

This follows on from the meeting held in Bilbao (Basque Country) in December 2013 for the signing of the creation agreement of the joint venture, TSG Ormazabal, the purpose of which is the assembly of cpg switchgear for primary distribution in Malaysia.

Present at the meeting was the President and CEO of TNB, Dato’ Ir. Hj. Azman bin Mohd, who in addition to showing interest for the concept of smart grids to be applied to his grids for a pilot project, highlighted the significant role that Malaysia plays in the Asian region, which has now increased with the creation of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) free-trade area made up of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Burma. The purpose of the free-trade area agreement is to achieve the free movement of products in the region. From 2015, Malaysia will be in charge of the presidency of said association for six months.

For more than 20 years Ormazabal has had a very close relationship with Malaysia, where we have installed more than 60,000 units. We aim to convert this country into our operations centre for Southeast Asia, starting with the opening of an office in Malaysia in the coming months.
