In today's Gospel we are invited to reflect on three things:
Firstly, rising from the dead, Jesus has the same physical body that he had but it is transformed and it is no longer confined to the physical form, space and time. That was why when Jesus appeared to his disciples who closely lived with him and shared a lot of common things with him before his resurrection, were not able to recognize him right away.
Secondly, Peter's physical nakedness is nothing to be concerned with rather his spiritual nakedness. When one, who really encounters the Lord, can see the truth about him or herself. Jesus did not reproach Peter for denying him but Peter was deeply aware about his unworthiness. This does
not happen for the first time as Peter already experienced his unworthiness before Jesus' resurrection. We can see Peter's encountering Jesus in St. Luke' s gospel at the first miracle of catching fish: "When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" (Lk 5. 8)
In today's gospel Jesus asked Peter the first time: "Do you love me more than these?" and two more times "Do you love me?", some people try to explain that Jesus asked Peter three times "Do you love me?" because Peter denied Jesus three times. If we think this way we tend to underestimate diminish Jesus' love for Peter and for all of us. I believe that Jesus did not mean to make fun of Peter. However, in order to be in charge of tending
Jesus' flock Peter must show his true love as Jesus really loves his flock.
On this Third Sunday of Easter, may we be able to recognize the Risen Lord's presence in the Church, in our life, in others and in the world. May we really encounter the Risen Lord so we may be able to be witnesses to his resurrection. Faith in the Risen Lord is handed to us by our ancestors in faith so we in turn must hand on this faith to others. This can happen only with our true love for him as witnesses he invites us to be .
Sincerely yours in Christ Fr. Peter Thang Nguyen
Your pastor.
