The risen Lord had instructed His disciples to meet Him in Galilee. “But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you” (Mark 16:7; Matthew 26:32; 28:7–10). So they all came up to Galilee, and Peter decided to go fishing in the Sea of Tiberias, which is also known as the Sea of Galilee. Peter and the other apostles had been called from the life of fishermen to follow Christ and be fishers of men (Luke 5:1–11). However, when he went fishing, Peter took six other men with him! Why would Peter and his friends go back to their old profession? Understandably they were confused and unsure of the future.

Early in the morning, Jesus came to the shore but the disciples failed to recognize Him. He called out to them

JOHN 21:1-14; ACTS 10:41

1After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. 2There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples. 3Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. 4But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.5Then Jesus saith unto them, Children, have ye any meat? They answered him, No. 6And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and

“Children, have ye any meat?” They said, “No.” When they responded to His authoritative voice and instruction to cast the net (v. 6), they hauled in a huge catch of fish (v. 11). This miracle enabled the disciples to identify the Lord and to recognize His ability to do great signs after His resurrection. It caused the beloved disciple to exclaim, “It is the Lord!” (cf. 20:28). Hearing John’s word, Peter immediately jumped into the water, and apparently swam to Jesus. This is typical of his impulsive nature (he went first into the tomb; 20:6). In the meantime, Jesus had prepared a breakfast of fish with bread for the hungry disciples.

Jesus called His disciples who were weary and hungry, “Come and dine.” He extended to His disciples the special communion with Him. All things are now ready; Come and dine. Christ is a friend; come, dine with Him. He will bid you welcome. When Jesus invited them to eat with Him, none of them asked who He was, for they knew it was the Lord. The identification of Jesus was so certain; all the disciples knew it was Jesus. Their meal together left an indelible impression on their

ye shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes.7Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.8And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. 9As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. 10Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. 11Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was

minds. Years later in his preaching, Peter spoke of himself as a reliable witness who ate and drank with Jesus after His resurrection (Acts 10:41). This was Jesus’ third appearance to the apostles, which John narrated (cf. John 20:19, 24 for the other two appearances).

Our resurrected Lord Jesus calls out to the weary and troubled to come to Him, that He may comfort and nourish them. Will you hesitate to go to Him? He is the Bread of Heaven, and He calls us to eat with Him. Let us rejoice that the resurrected Lord is bidding us to have fellowship with Him. Let us respond to Him, saying, “Lord, may I commune with You each day.”

not the net broken. 12Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. 14This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

39And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

ACTS 10:39-41

Page 6: He is not here: for He is risen Matthew 28:6 ETHSEANEgethsemanebpc.com/.../english/2012/20120408.pdf · The risen Lord had instructed His disciples to meet Him in Galilee. “But

Dear children, as we commemo-rate Easter Sunday, let us learn about the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, and tell others about it.When Mary Magdalene and some ladies went to the tomb where Jesus was buried, they found that the stone covering the entrance had been rolled away. They entered the tomb but could not find the body of Jesus. Instead, there were two angels who asked them, “Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen.”Jesus had been crucified on a

cross three days ago by then. Joseph of Arimathaea had gone to Pilate, the Roman governor, to ask for Jesus’ body. After his soldiers had confirmed that Jesus was dead, Pilate gave the body to Joseph who took the body and buried it in a new tomb. Now, the body was not in the tomb on the third day, and the angels reminded the ladies what Jesus had said about Himself earlier, “The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” Then they hurriedly went to inform the

disciples of Jesus about His resurrection. Later on, the Lord Himself appeared to many of His disciples, and ascended into heaven before their eyes (cf. Luke 24:36 & 44-48).My young reader, you must be thankful to the Lord Jesus for the hope of resurrection. May God help all of us to tell others about the bodily resurrection of Jesus that they too may have hope in Christ.

The Resurrection of Jesus“He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again” (Luke 24:6-7).
