Do you miss your old HKUST friends? Now HKUST alumni can keep in touch with each other through this section in Alumni News!Tell us about your recent news: weddings, births, appointments, promotions, new company start-ups, further studies, moving houseetc., so that we can spread the news to your classmates. Or, if you are organizing a reunion, looking for a long-lost friend, seekingbusiness partners, or have read a good book, taken a nice picture during your vacation, or have a brilliant idea to share, this is the placefor you!

Please send in your news to us by mail, fax or email. Fax: +852 2705-9119. Email: [email protected]. Mail: Office of UniversityDevelopment and Public Affairs, 1/F, Academic Building, HKUST, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

Deadline for submissions for the next issue is 20 December.

Greetings from SingaporeShuTin Wah (’97 CENG): It may be a surprise to

some of you to hear that I am now in Singapore.

Well, I came at very short notice, and I wish I could

have seen all of you before I left. But now I’m here,

studying the MBA program at the National

University of Singapore. To those who are interested in a ‘juicy’ account

of my ‘adventures’ in Singapore, or those who wish

to ask about studying or living in Singapore,

please feel free to email me at [email protected].

sg. There are just too many things here to tell you!

Note to all HKUST alumni in Singapore:Some of my fellow HKUST alumni in Singapore andI wish to compile a contact list of all HKUST alumniwho are located in Singapore. Our objective is toestablish a network, so we can help each other out, meet for social gatherings, or as a means of seekingcollaboration with alumni in this new country. We arealso happy to answer any questions from alumni whowish to learn about Singapore.

For inquiries and enrollment on the contact list, please email your name and contact details [email protected] or [email protected]. We will getback to you as soon as possible!

Greetings from Taiwan

Angelica Leung (’98 MARK): It’s great to have this opportunity

to send greetings to all of you. I am currently working for Cathay

Pacific Airways in Taipei as part of the management trainee

program. Taiwan is a very interesting place, especially with the

new government and the pending direct links between the

Mainland and Taiwan, which will affect Hong Kong’s status as the

gateway to China.

Recently Taiwan has seen a major new wave of coffee culture.

On every street there are cafes, ranging from Starbucks, IS Coffee

to small family-run ones. You can sit for hours over a cup of coffee

or tea and read through their selections of books and magazines.

Compared to Hong Kong, there are many more self-run businesses

(not always chain stores) in Taiwan, which makes walking around

so much more interesting. You always find something new and

exciting to discover in every shop.

Now a little bit of news about the airline industry. What

passengers usually see are the check-in staff and the cabin

attendants. The back-office support staff are often forgotten. There

are over 30 departments in Cathay Pacific, ranging from

Engineering, Marketing, Personnel, Customer Relations, to

International Affairs etc. Imagine, if you

worked in one department for a year, you

would be over 50 years old when you

finished the rotation.

I would like to get in touch with

alumni working at Cathay Pacific and also

those in Taiwan to start a mini alumni

network. I would also appreciate being

contacted by friends whom I have

temporarily lost contact with. Please write

to [email protected].

Picture of Angelica Leung taken in the Taipei Ju Ming Museum. Ju Ming is a

world-renowned sculptor whose famous Taichi and The Living World series

are currently exhibited at the LG7 lawn area.

Please write

to [email protected].

are currently exhibited at the LG7 lawn area.
