The Lilydale Progressive—December 2003 Page 1 It’s that time of the year again, Christmas is just around the corner, seems to come around more and more quickly the older I get. Makes me shudder to think how fast it’ll come around when I’m ten years older than this! Often at this time of the year we get to thinking about others. Cards and presents are posted off to distant friends and relatives, plans are made for parties and get togethers, contact is made with people we haven’t spoken to in 12 months or so. Why is that? Why do we wait until an occasion like Christmas comes along to bring to mind all the people who mean something to us? Surely if they mean that much to us we should be in regular contact with them. I know the answer just as well as the rest of you! During the rest of the year we all get so busy, tied up with our own little lives we have no time to think about anything else. “Will I get that promotion at work? How are the kids going at school? Should I wear the pink or green shirt with those black stirrup pants?” Many of the (what we believe to be) earth shattering decisions we have to make every day of our lives aren’t really that important are they, not if we get right down to it. Most of our time is spent worrying about what might happen instead of just getting out there and doing or being the best person we can possibly be. It brings to mind some lines from an e-mail I received, purportedly the thought was written by Erma Bombeck when she found out she was dying of cancer. One part of the e-mail entitled “If I had my life to live over again” says: “There would have been more ‘I love 2003 International year of Fresh Water you's.’ More ‘I'm sorry's.’ But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and really see it ... live it ... and never give it back. Stop sweating the small stuff. Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what. Instead, let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.“ And to me that’s the important bit. “Cherish the relationships you already have” Take the time to ensure they don’t wither and die of neglect. These are the times you’ll look back on later on in life with fondest memories, the heart-warming times, remembering those rambling old tales your Grandfather told you, or that hilarious year when Uncle Peter fell in the swimming pool trying to take that HOWZAT catch in backyard cricket. Let’s all try to make this Christmas our happiest one yet. Think about someone you know who could do with a bit of cheering up and invite them over, but don’t forget to continue strengthening these relationships by regular contact throughout the year. Whether you celebrate Christmas as a religious event or not, I wish you all every happiness and joy, not only for December 25th but throughout the year. Over the years at the Hair Salon you have become more than clients and I regard you as friends. What a wonderful supportive community we live in. A special thank you to Maureen who has kept us supplied with baked cakes Mike especially appreciated them. Best wishes for Christmas and 2004 to you all. Sue Armes

Tasmanian Regional Arts, Lilydale Branch Christmas is approaching at an alarming speed, however, preparations for our second ‘Carols on the Green’ are well in hand, and, going by the current activity at the shelter, we will have a perfect setting. To give the Green a Christmas atmosphere we have available a number of cardboard cylinders, of various lengths and diameters which we hope to have decorated and assembled as an installation for the festive season. As with the Fence Posts (remember them?), we hope that a variety of Groups will take on the responsibility of decorating a cylinder for the occasion. They can be painted, made into Angels, have decorations glued on, the sky is the limit. If you want to be involved please contact Jillian Weston on 63 95 1062 to collect your cylinder. As at our inaugural Carols evening we will again be entertained by our local choir, ‘The Valley Voices”. As well there will be community singing and a free sausage sizzle, with our faithful local Fire Brigade doing the ‘sizzling’. Please bring a chair, or you may prefer to sit on the grass, which right now looks very inviting. The event will start at 7 p.m. Local Artist Jillian Weston has been working with a dedicated band of local High School students, painting colourful murals as a backdrop for their proposed ‘Shady Café’ area. We look forward to admiring the finished artwork. On behalf of the Committee of the Lilydale Branch of Tasmanian Regional Arts, I wish all our members and the people of the Lilydale District a great Christmas Season and a safe and happy New Year.

As another year draws to a close I can honestly say this has been our busiest year yet. We may not have been full every day but we’ve certainly achieved some terrific things. One of our most notable achievements would have to be the HART Portal, for all things Health related this has been a wonderful project which is gaining recognition across not only Tasmania but Australia wide with a recent article in Community Teleservices Australia Inc newsletter. www.hart.org.au We’ve helped 5 patrons learn more about computers by completing an E-Learn course online. Hundreds of others have been helped to achieve their goals, be they, getting a job, corresponding with friends and relatives via e-mail, scanning and printing photos, learning to use a computer as well as the many different types of software available, learning what to look for when buying a computer, surfing the web and so much more. Naturally we couldn’t have done this without the support of our Volunteers, so a big thankyou to Colin Denney, Scott Livingston, Toby Smith and Nick Livingston for their help throughout the year. The Centre will be closing for a short period over the Christmas Break. Opening times are as follows: Thursday December 25th to Monday 5th January 2004 the Centre will be closed. Tuesday 6th Jan Open 3-7pm Wednesday 7th Jan Closed Thursday 8th Jan Closed Friday 9th Jan Open 2-7pm Saturday 10th Jan Closed Everything will be back to normal on Tuesday 13th January .

Mary Walsh Centre This month our days have been a little warmer than the previous months. The cold winds have not entirely left us yet, although they do serve a good purpose in keeping the temperatures down a little. I suppose we should be grateful for that, as few people like the extreme heat we get, which doesn’t seem to be good for anything. Although we had a wet winter, we badly need a good rain statewide. This year the centre produced forty-two “Samaritan” boxes to be dispatched by the Red Cross, to needy children abroad. We would dearly love to see their dear little faces as they open them and trust that these boxes are truly bringing joy into the lives of these children. We travelled, again this year, to Lebrina to attend the annual luncheon at the home of John and Dulcie Williams, which is held annually to raise funds for the Anglican Church. This outing is enjoyed by all who go there. The day was fine but windy. Debbie, with the help of Dorothea, has been busy sewing and making garments etc. while others do knitting or crocheting to fill in their time here at the day care. We enjoy the food and one another’s company. We feel that day care serves a good purpose here at Lilydale, and we can go out for trips whenever we want to, and also attend the doctor’s or go shopping whenever it is needed. Our co-ordinator is very helpful at all times and very, very fair to all. Sharee Parker visited the centre and treated us each to a foot spa. We did feel pampered! The centre purchased the required products (with money we had raised from craft sales) so we can hold repeat sessions whenever the mood takes us. At the time of writing we have just enjoyed an “armchair travel” to Central Australia, courtesy of Irene and Vera who kindly showed us the video of their trip.

Senior Citizens Club Christmas is not far away. Members of the Lilydale Senior Citizens Club would like to wish you one and all a very Happy Christmas. And may the year ahead, bring you all good health and happiness. We would like to say a big “thank you” to all the folk who work to make the town so nice a place to live in. Our Club has had a wonderful year, of happiness and companionship, with lots of laughter and good bowling. Perhaps you would like to share with us our enjoyment of life and good company; you would be made most welcome to come in for a talk, a laugh, and perhaps an end or seven of bowls. Once again, to you all have a Happy Christmas. Eileen

An old bluish coloured car has been seen parked in an unused driveway at Turners Marsh.

Several gnomes went missing from a Lilydale home but have since been returned.

Several boxes of plants were stolen from outside a home on Lilydale Road on the weekend of the Derby River Derby.

Some signs were stolen from outside a property on Pipers River Road, Turners Marsh.

Quite a number of gates were stolen in the Tunnel area recently.

A house and shed at Tunnel were broken into and tools etc were stolen.

Noisy vehicles have been driving up and down the Tunnel road about midnight on several occasions recently.

Police Report On 10th October, there was a common assault at the Lilydale District High School On 21st October, another common assault at a house in Lilydale. Between 27th Oct and 28th Oct in the Lebrina area a

motor vehicle was broken into and property stolen. Total amount of damage and property value was $355.

Our next meeting will be a short one before our Christmas Dinner on December 11th. We will be having a meeting on 8th January 2004. We do not have a break during the holiday period and hopefully we will have the ultra violet pens available for you to purchase and mark all of your valuables with.

Merry Christmas to all! A teacher asked her students to write the words to their favourite Christmas Carols, here are some of the humorous lines she received: Deck the Halls with Buddy Holly On the first day of Christmas my tulip gave to me He's makin a list, chicken and rice. Venarchi Contracting is the contractor appointed by Launceston City Council to upgrade the Main Street of Lilydale. Brian Cawthen is their Project Manager. Darren Bracy is their on-site supervisor. The work around Doaks Road is almost finished, asphalting and linemarking is all that is left to do. Most of the pedestrian crossings have been installed and most of the kerb and channel work is well underway. Over the next couple of weeks, work will start on the footpaths and kerb & channel at Lalla Road junction.

Working hours: 7.30 am to 5pm Monday to Friday. There may be some Saturday work.

Lions Club News On Saturday 6th December, from 9 a.m. we will be holding our Annual Cake Drive in and around Lilydale with the help of the Lilydale Fire Brigade. Santa Claus will be helping and will probably have some sweet treats for the ‘younger’ children. We would like to acknowledge the help of the Fire Brigade - we couldn’t do it without you. Please buy a cake to support our activities. Cakes are $11 each. Some of our Members attended the State Conference at Bridport in November. President Ron Reid initiated a motion calling on the State Government to fund research into the current plight of Tasmanian Devils (the native animal not the football team). Don’t forget our Annual Dog’s Day Out – Sunday 21st March 2004. Has your dog got what it takes to win an event, e.g. best dressed dog, fastest Goodo eater, obstacles race etc.

1802 – Jan 13 Frenchman Nicholas Baudin of the Geographe and Naturaliste anchors off Bruny Island, before exploring the south-east and east coasts of Tasmania. British 1803-1850’s Outpost. Governor King of the British settlement at New South Wales became increasingly nervous about the intentions of French explores in the region. In March 1803 he commissioned Lt. John Bowen to form a settlement at the Derwent River to ward off French interests, to establish another base for convicts and to exploit the island’s timber getting agricultural and sealing resources. In 1803 a further settlement (Port Dalrymple) was commenced on the north of the island, under the command of Lt. Col William Paterson. The fledgling settlement on the Derwent was plagued by food shortages, convict unrest and internal conflicts. The food supply became so desperately low in 1806 that Lt. David Collins had six whalers from the Ferret flogged for refusing to hand over two casks of biscuits and three casks of flour for the relief of the settlement. By 1853, however, Tasmanians were celebrating the end of convict transportation to the colony, the population had reached over 70,999, whaling and wool exports had become the mainstay of the colony and ship-building was also showing great potential. Over 127,000 acres were in cultivation. Tasmania had been made a separate colony in 1825, and in 1856 was granted responsible self-government. The expansion of settlement, however, had caused the Aboriginal population to suffer both dispossession and depopulation. Prolonged conflict with settlers and sealers over resources, the abduction of Aboriginal women, and exposure to disease whilst held in captivity severely reduced their numbers.

HALLOWEEN FAIR

Our Halloween Fair on Friday, 31st October was great! Mind you, the day didn’t start off too well. The rain started about 9.30 and a light drizzle quickly turned into steady rain. Stalls were moved inside and new signs made to direct customers in the right directions. Emergency tarpaulins were put up and everyone scrambled for raincoats and umbrellas. And in the middle of it all, we had to evacuate to the Hall because the fire alarms went off! The House of Horrors run by the 6/7 classes was a huge success and they scared a variety of ages with wet spaghetti and frightening faces which caused many squeals and screams. Other attractions included the jumping castle, putt putt golf, handball competition, Circatron, dodgem cars and the fashion parade. Everyone had heaps to eat and the cake stall was a great success. Thank you to all those who supported us on the day.

A message from the Acting Principal Rose Parker

Another school year is nearly at an end and I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the staff at Lilydale District School, to wish you all a happy festive season and a wonderful New Year. My job this year as Acting Principal has certainly been an eye opener in more ways than one! I learnt things I didn’t know, things I didn’t think I needed to know, things I’ll probably never need to know again and things I’d rather forget… I will however, be returning to my Assistant Principal’s role in 2004 and am looking forward to having my own classes again. In my five years at Lilydale I have become extremely fond of the students at your school. They are friendly, trustworthy and generally well behaved. They have always made me feel welcome and that what I do is worthwhile. The staff has been wonderful and you can rest assured that the students in this community have been in good hands. I cannot remember working with a more professional and dedicated group in my 20+ years of teaching. Helen French will return next year as Principal and she should be delighted with the teachers and support staff she will be working with. Once again, have a wonderful summer and I look forward to working with many of you, and your children, next year .

Mt Arthur Centre News Dear All, We have had a very busy year at the Centre and would like to thank everyone who has contributed in anyway to it's ongoing development. The Centre will be closed throughout January but if you would like to make a booking for it's use in that time, please contact us asap. We will re-open in the first week of February 2004. If anyone has a few spare hours to help three Greening Australia members make the stream at the Centre more user friendly on the 4th and 5th of Dec. please let us know. The main job will be the clearing of blackberry's. Our last fundraising event for the year will be on Saturday 13th Dec. 8pm. The cost is $10.00 pp and supper will be provided. The Kepler Ensemble will be performing again for us with a musical feast of European and English Christmas Carols with a selection from Corelli, J.S. Bach, Haydn, List, Saint-Seans and Scott Joplin. Please come along and get into the 'Spirit of Christmas' with them and us on the 13th. Lilydale Retirement Units At our November Members meeting, it was resolved by special resolution that the name of the Organisation be changed from Lilydale Retirement Homes and Day Care Incorporated to the Lilydale Retirement Units Incorporated. The necessary paperwork to put this in train is now being addressed. Mr. Todd Wilkin is currently working on a design concept for the new block, which when complete will give us an idea as to how we can place the new units with the best aspect, size and position. This is a starting point, it is the old chicken and egg problem, we can’t start making submissions until we have design, plans, budgets etc in place. Frustrating isn’t it! We currently have a vacancy on the Board of Management, if you are interested in filling this position we would be pleased to hear from you. Please contact Carol Charlton on 63 95 1263. We are looking forward to the break over the Christmas/New Year period, and to come back fresh, with great new ideas and continued enthusiasm. I would like to thank the Board Members for their continued commitment over the past year, their work on their particular areas of expertise on the Board

Hayfever can be classified as intermittent, where symptoms occur only now and again and persistent where the symptoms are evident for more than four weeks a year or four days a week. Hayfever is further divided into mild or moderate to severe. In the latter case work, school or leisure activities are impaired or sleep is disturbed. This way of describing hayfever symptoms is especially useful in Australia where the spring and summer allergy “season” can extend from August through to March and our mild weather enables the house dust mite (a likely trigger factor for hayfever) to live happily with us throughout the year. Oral antihistamines are particularly helpful. The older antihistamines like Polaramine, Zadine and Phenergan are effective but can cause drowsiness in some people. The newer antihistamines such as Claratyne, Telfast and Zyrtec are more popular as they don’t cause drowsiness and can be taken once a day. Decongestant tablets like Sudafed are often used but they can elevate blood pressure and keep people awake. Decongestants are more effective when used in combination with an antihistamine. There are many of these medications available, including Demazin, Sinutab and some Chemist Own brands. If a runny nose is the main problem, the antihistamine nasal spray Azep is a useful alternative. This can be used intermittently when it is needed. For moderate to severe and persistent runny noses and blocked noses, the intra-nasal corticosteroid sprays are

HEALTH NOTES

From the Lilydale Pharmacy Hayfever

Hayfever is often thought of as a trivial condition – just a sniffle and a sneeze. In fact, for the hayfever sufferer, the impact on quality of life can be enormous, and the economic effects are significant too. Medically speaking, hayfever is known as allergic rhinitis. Rhinitis literally means inflammation of the nasal passages; but this description is not really an adequate indication of the havoc that hayfever can cause. The allergic inflammatory process doesn’t stop at the nose. The symptoms of hayfever are many and varied. Typically they include sneezing, a clear nasal discharge, watery, itchy eyes, itchy throat, blocked nose and, not surprisingly, lack of energy. Headache sometimes occurs and the sense of smell can also be affected. While none of these symptoms would appear to be life threatening, they can certainly have a serious adverse effect on the productivity of work or study, and destroy the enjoyment of leisure activities. Hayfever is a global health problem. It affects about 25% of the world’s population. In Australia the situation is even worse, with about 40% of adults in this country showing allergy symptoms – usually allergic rhinitis. This makes hayfever the most common chronic condition for people consulting their doctor.

the best option. Products in this category include Be-conase and Rhinocort. These nasal sprays must be used every day to maintain their effectiveness, but take a few days of use before they begin to work. They are safe to use for several months continuously if needed. Decongestant sprays like Nasex or Sinex can be helpful over a short period. The problem with these sprays is ‘rebound congestion’ which will occur if the spray is used for more than 5 days in a row. When using any nasal spray, it should be aimed towards the ear, and not straight up. If you can taste it then the spray is not going to the right place. For itchy eyes, antihistamine eye drops are effective but sometimes make the eyes sting. Napthcon A is very good. Severe hayfever will need a doctor’s assistance.

Lilydale Landcare Association Our members have been very busy with the last plantings at Merthyr Park before the ‘dry’ sets in- it may have already! We congratulate Stella, our President, on being appointed a member of the Committee of Tasmanian Landcare Association. Our volunteers also deserve recognition for the work they have done in gorse eradication along the banks of Rocky Creek. There is still much to be done in that area and help from the Community would be greatly appreciated. Phone a member if you are interested! Many plants will be in flower at Merthyr Park in December, so it is well worth a walk to see them and to listen to the birds of the bush. We extend a warm welcome to Deborah, a new member of our Community and of Lilydale Landcare. We hope that others wishing to contribute something to the environment will be enthused to join our friendly and likeminded group. CWA Notes: December – end of the School year, the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations, then a new year to look forward to - a chance to break all the wonderful resolutions one makes in the heat of the moment.

All enjoyed the visit of the Visually Impaired group from Launceston, a friendly group with their carers. The concert presented by Students at the Lilydale School was excellent and really appreciated by us all. Well done and thanks to Staff and Pupils for giving their time and talents for the enjoyment of others. Catering is on the menu again. 21st November for a small busload of Mainland tourists. Chris Deane from the School came during our morning craft session of making Christmas decorations. We took a break to hear about the shade café at the School. As a result we have given money for the purchase of an umbrella, a very worthwhile project. The Empty Stocking fund has benefited by $30. Our Christmas breakup will be lunch at the Rosevears Tavern, 3rd December and an exploration of the West Tamar area. If you are becoming frustrated/harassed by the Christmas rush, take a few moments to pause and consider the true meaning of and why we have this Celebration. With the festive season here, a thought on GIVING – “The more you give away, the more you find is laid for you in trust of other kind”. From all CWA members – peace and happiness for Christmas and may 2004 be a year of good health and many blessings. Dorothy Story

Lilydale Football Club News With no new faces at the Club’s AGM it will be the same old team next year. With numbers down there will be a need bring more people on to the Committee before the Season starts. The first Committee Meeting for the new year will be held on the 20th January, prior to the start of training for the Seniors and Reserves on the 22nd. Any one who is interested in joining the Committee or assisting the Club can contact the President, David Walsh, phone 63 23 0200 (Launceston Mitsubishi) 63 95 4299 (home), Secretary, Sue Watson 63 95 1361 or write to the Club at P.O. Box 24, Lilydale 7268. It now looks as though the AFL will take steps to solve Football’s insurance problems, if further price increases can be avoided, it will be a start. The Club’s insurance costs doubled in the last two years with the Public Risk component going up by three times as much. With no changes to the Club prices for a number of years, the Club has been absorbing price increases, but the stage has been reached where there is nothing left to give. The new Committee will be looking at ways to get the Club profitable again. Some ideas so far are:

introducing a Membership fee for Juniors, NTJFA Clubs charge up to $70/80.

more active participation in running the Club, raising money be Parents could be a trade off to prevent Junior Membership Fees being introduced.

the Club is not a free baby sitting service. two major raffles each year plus the Christmas

Likewise, there are matters at the Ground that need attending which are not only the concern of the Football Club, but all present and future users. The kids have not had any news lately on the BMX track, it was to have been completed in October. We were told a contract had been let to fix up the drainage that was stuffed up when the tank was put up, does this contract still exist? It is ideas time, any one with an idea for the Recreation Ground is requested to put it in writing and send it to us at P.O Box 24, Lilydale 7268. Everything can then be submitted to the Council “Wish List” and long term plans drawn up. Some ideas we have already listed, can you improve on them? small and large pipes (second hand) could be

used in the drains around the BMX track for humps and hollows as well as drainage.

once the pipes have been put in place, the track can be extended along the southern fence around the water tank.

new drains laid around the outside of the ground, the old agricultural pipes covered by slate have collapsed in at least one section.

a shallow spoon drain around the ground over the new drain will prevent most of the ground water from flowing on to the ground and direct it into the drains.

water pipes be placed around the ground at the same time in the same trench as when the drainage is done to give at least 4 watering points.

the tap in the middle of the ground be taken out and the hole filled in.

the water tank be connected to the pipes around the ground and the water be drawn from that source not directly from the Lilydale water supply.

the parking area at the gate be extended along in front of the Show Building to Kelp’s fence.

asphalt be laid from Doaks Road to the Southern end of the Club rooms.

play ground equipment be installed. shrubs planted along the road fence.

Not a bad list for starters doing one job allows other things to be done in a step by step process, it may take 5/10 years to do everything, but if done properly, there will be a saving by making the maintenance easier. Back to Football and the 2004 Season. It is hoped to be able to make an announcement about Coaches in a few weeks. Some very good talks have been held regarding an Assistant Coach to Senior Coach Steve Buchanan and a Reserves Coach. It is the Club’s plan to stick with our good, young, local players and lets face it, we would be silly not to, they did very well this year and don’t be surprised if the disappointments of 2003 make them a more determined and better team next year. It was good for the Club and Lilydale the way so many old faces have started coming back to our Home Games, some are a bit greyer and more wrinkled, but it is not only Football, it is renewing old acquaintances and friendships. It also gives the Club a lift and encouragement to the young players in the teams. Club Diary: December Christmas Raffle 2004 January ? Meet the Coaches Day – to be announced. January 20th Committee Meeting in Club Rooms – 8 p.m. January 22nd Training starts, Seniors and Reserves, Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6.00 p.m. Have a Happy Christmas and even better New Year.

Pray for Gifts: Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents the week before Christmas. At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs. "I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE... I PRAY FOR A NEW NINTENDO... I PRAY FOR A NEW VCR..." His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother and said, "Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn't deaf." To which the little brother re-plied, "No, but Grandma is!"
