The College has a unique partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University. Together we have developed a range of Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) which are relevant to the employment needs of the local area. Our aim is to inspire students who have the potential, but who might not otherwise consider higher education. These courses are ideal if you have followed a vocational study path and want to make the transition from College to higher education or to higher skilled employment. They are also ideal for students who might be seeking an alternative to traditional university entrance.

Higher National Certificates and Diplomas (HNCs/HNDs)

An HNC/HND develops work-relevant knowledge and skills for your chosen professional area. The qualifications have intrinsic value to employers and are also an ideal springboard to further study. An HNC or HND will enable you to demonstrate the confidence and capacity for employment in senior positions where you are required to exercise personal responsibility. An HNC/HND can be your passport to improved career options. It is still the case that someone with a degree (e.g. BA or BSc) is better equipped to succeed in an increasingly competitive jobs market. An HNC will usually be recognised as equivalent to the first year of a degree and an HND to the first two years. Full details of the HNC/HND courses we offer start on page 17.

Higher Apprenticeships

Higher Apprenticeships are the gold standard of Apprenticeship training courses, and give employees the chance to build up practical work experience while progressing

A Practical Route to University

HNCs/HNDs provide a valuable, real world approach to learning and offer a more practical route to university which is ideal for students who have followed a vocational study path. A typical offer for entry to an HNC/HND is between 80 and 120 UCAS points.

About the College

Recognised by Ofsted as ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding Leadership’, East Kent College has campuses at Broadstairs, Dover and Folkestone.

Established in 1948, the College has developed an international reputation in Hospitality and Catering, with past students including celebrity chefs Nathan Outlaw and Gary Rhodes. The College has particular expertise in Business and Finance, as well as the Creative Arts and the Service Industries.

Given our close proximity to one of the world’s largest wind farms, it is appropriate that the College is leading the way in developments in Environmental Technology encompassing Engineering and Construction.

Recent major investment includes a new £6.5m Centre for Environmental Technologies, a £3.3m Centre for Creative Industries, and the development of the historic Yarrow Building into a unique training hotel for the study of hospitality, catering and associated professions as part of a £9.7m building programme.

About the University and its Broadstairs Campus

Canterbury Christ Church University is the largest centre in Kent for higher education in the Public Services − notably Teacher Training, Nursing, Policing, Health and Social Care – and a significant provider of courses in a wide range of academic and professional areas. In total the University offers over a thousand academic and professional study courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

The University’s Broadstairs campus is a modern, purpose-built facility offering an excellent environment to study a range of subjects, including Business, Media, Music and Policing.

There are over 1000 full-time and part-time students at the campus, studying a broad range of subjects. The Creative Arts feature significantly, with courses in Media, Music (such as Commercial Music), Graphic Design, Multimedia Design, Video and Motion Graphics, Web Design, Music Production, Photography and Creative Music Technology.

The Business School specialises in Business Management, with courses such as Music Industry Management and Logistics tailored to specific industries.

Courses for Public Services at the campus encompass Early Childhood Studies, Health and Social Care, and also Policing. The courses are all designed with future employment in mind and the University has a record to be proud of.

DiscoverOur Learning Facilities

At East Kent College we have invested significantly in our facilities in order to provide students with a stimulating learning environment. HNC/HND students can also access the University’s local campus in Broadstairs.

East Kent College

The College provides a well-equipped and supportive environment for study. Because we focus on vocational, technical and professional qualifications our workshops, salons, computer and business suites are some of the best in the area. Our brand-new Common Room area for HNC/HND students provides a comfortable space to study, or relax with friends. Our new £6.5m Centre for Environmental Technologies is still the only centre of its kind in Kent with excellent specialist facilities. Add in our new Centre for Creative Industries, with Digital Media suites and Music Performance spaces and a new training hotel for 2015, and you can be assured of an exciting work-related environment to support your academic success.

Canterbury Christ Church University – Broadstairs Campus

HNC/HND students will also be able to use the Learning Centre at the University’s campus in Broadstairs. You can be confident that you will be able to access all the learning resources you will need for your course.

The Learning Centre provides a wide range of computing facilities through its open access IT suite. Here you will find a library of books and periodicals, a full range of viewing and listening facilities for reference, with media resources such as DVDs and CDs. At your computer you will be able to check the availability of books and other resources, reserve items, renew loans and request inter-library loans. A 24-hour delivery service will bring a requested book or journal order from one of the University’s library locations to the Broadstairs campus.

DiscoverStudent Life

Student Unions are active in both the College and the University, with annually elected committees working in both institutions.

The Student Union is an independent organisation run for students, by students, and always with student interests as the central focus. The union has a Campus Coordinator at the Broadstairs campus, and together with the elected committee they organise the Student Union and the activities at the University’s campus.

Getting Involved

Your first opportunity to get involved will be during Freshers Week, helping you get into student life! There will be plenty of chances to meet your union officers either at the College, or for HNC/HND students, at the University, and to join societies and groups, and make new friends in a friendly, supportive environment.

Throughout the year there will be a whole variety of social events and sporting activities in which to get involved, both in and around the College, and for HNC/HND students, at the University’s Broadstairs campus. There are regular music gigs at Horizons bar at the Broadstairs campus, and a range of sport and

fitness activities such as yoga and fencing. There are also regular football and rugby squad training sessions. HNC/HND students at the Broadstairs campus also have the opportunity to play for the University in inter-university leagues.

Learn and Earn

HNC/HND students are able to work while studying. Each course has been organised in a flexible way in order to accommodate, for example, the needs of students in Technology (Engineering and Construction) for day-release study, and the needs of Creative Arts (Media and Music) students for independent access to specialist facilities for their project work.

All HNCs/HNCs are taught over 30 weeks, and as well as the commitment to attend lectures and tutorials, you will also need to allow time for independent study at the College or the University campus learning centre. Please read the Factfile for each course to see the weekly schedule of teaching.

It is important to us that you feel fully able to enjoy your studies and are confident in your ability to get the most out of this life-changing experience.

Mature Students

Across the College around 50% of students are mature, and so mature applicants are always in good company. If you don’t have the right formal qualifications but do have some experience, then talk to us − we look at each application individually.

Care Leavers

Both the College and the University have been award the Buttle UK Quality Mark for Care Leavers, which recognises the enhanced support and encouragement we give to young people from care to help them into higher education.

Study Support

You’ll find friendly Study Skills Advisers in East Kent College’s Library Learning Zone, offering individual and small-group support, as well as workshops to help enhance and develop your academic skills. There is also support for training in the use of IT, online study tools, and the College’s computing network.

Personal Tutor

Each HNC/HND course is taught at the College by the course team, led by the Programme Director. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will provide academic support and guidance during your course. Your personal tutor will usually schedule regular individual or small-group tutorials to ensure that you have the opportunity to discuss your progress, and seek any advice you may need, perhaps particularly regarding assessments and coursework. Your personal tutor will also be able to advise on the range of student services available at the College and the University so that you are well supported in student life.

Whatever your background, starting a university-level course will probably be a major change for you, and we are here to help every step of the way.

Student Assessment and Support

East Kent College’s welcoming and inclusive team of specialist staff is dedicated to supporting and assisting you if you have physical disabilities, specific learning difficulties, mental health conditions, ongoing chronic illness or any other disability. You can get help and guidance during your application, and then on-going advice throughout your studies, for example in obtaining support within the College and in applying for appropriate funding such as Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) where eligible.

Careers Advice

East Kent College and the University have tremendous expertise when it comes to advising you on the best way to prepare for your future career, and how to maximise the impact of your skills, qualifications and experience in an increasingly competitive jobs market. The advice includes individual help to answer your queries, guidance on creating a professional CV (curriculum vitae), and interview techniques. You will be encouraged to produce a Personal Development Plan, collating and reflecting on the skills and experience you gain while studying in higher education at the College or University.

Recruitment Agency

Both the College and University have a Recruitment Agency/Job Shop. Here you

can get help with CV writing, assistance completing applications, and any coaching and guidance you may need to apply for part-time jobs while you study. There are also live job vacancies that you can apply for.

Counselling Services

Sometimes you just need a bit more help and support. If things get difficult, for whatever reason, whether it’s adjusting to leaving home, struggling with study, or something more serious, our professional and confidential counselling service is here to help. Our counsellors are all professionally trained and accredited practitioners with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and provide our students with opportunities to explore personal anxieties and emotional concerns. As well as working with individuals, we also offer workshops on matters such as stress management, anxiety and assertiveness.

Entry RequirementsHNCs and HNDs

East Kent College and Canterbury Christ Church University encourage and welcome applications from all students able to benefit from the courses offered.

Individual Consideration

Applications are considered individually, taking into account academic qualifications and paying great attention to the personal statement and the reference(s) provided with the application. All applicants will be offered an interview during which they will be encouraged to discuss the experience, interests and personal qualities that will be relevant to their future success on their chosen course. Many mature students already meet entry requirements before they apply for their course because of previous study, work or life experience. However, if you are a mature student without formal qualifications you can still apply. We look at each application on an individual basis.

80-120 UCAS Points

Generally a place on a higher education course is offered on the basis of grades up to a certain number of UCAS tariff points. A typical offer for entry to an HNC/HND is between 80-120 UCAS tariff points. In order to meet an entry requirement of, for example, 80 UCAS tariff points, an applicant would

need to gain two A-levels at Grade E or have achieved PP for a BTEC Level 3 Diploma. The College and University will not normally make an offer for a place on an HNC/HND based on AS qualifications alone. Applicants studying on an Access to Higher Education course will need to achieve a Pass in their qualification in order to progress to an HNC/HND.

Personal Statement

The UCAS personal statement is the most important section of your application. There is no actual word limit – instead, you have a maximum of 47 lines or 4000 characters to work with. It allows you to tell the universities and colleges you are applying to why they should offer you a place. You need to

convey your passion and enthusiasm for the subject to the admissions tutors, as well as demonstrate your suitability for the course. Before you start, remember that this is a personal statement, i.e. it’s about you.

What will I study?

As a Level 4 qualification, this is equivalent to the first year of a university-level course.

This course provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in business.

External organisations bring a practical perspective, giving students the opportunity to experience real-life business situations. Throughout the course the focus is on practical situations and issues of the business world.

The course will cover the broad principles you need to understand the world of business and to begin to operate successfully at a responsible level. You will start with an introduction to the Business Environment, Finances, the Organisation, and Marketing. Then there will be a specialist focus on:

What will I learn?

As a Level 4 qualification, this course is equivalent to the first year of a university-level course.

The learning experience will be enhanced by the involvement of external organisations from the tourism industry in the locality and the region. These organisations bring a practical perspective, and balance the study of theory with the wide experience of the market in practice.

In addition, our lecturers are all experienced in the industry and continue to keep up to date with current developments.

The course applies an industry perspective to the study of this sector and starts with a foundation which focuses on the fundamentals of the industry and its finance and funding.

East Kent is the only UK college to provide students for front-of-house work experience at Buckingham Palace, and students also have the opportunity to work in prestigious establishments such as the Intercontinental on London’s Park Lane. What will I learn?

The qualification will provide the opportunity to gain AAT professional membership and/or fast track onto further Accounting qualifications, including CIPFA, CIMA, ICAEW, ICAS and ACCA. Our Higher Apprenticeships have been created in consultation with employers, and provide the skills, knowledge and experience you need to get ahead of the pack for future promotion or career advancement. They offer a new work-based route into professions which have traditionally been the preserve of graduates.

Tomorrow’s growth for UK plc will mean reshaping the economy around high-value and high-skill activities. This means that employment now and in the future requires more highly skilled people. Higher Apprenticeships are helping to meet this need.

Higher Apprenticeships are run along the same lines as traditional apprenticeships and you will need to be in employment before you start your course. A Higher Apprenticeship incorporates a work-based learning programme and leads to a nationally recognised qualification at Level 4 and above. Levels 4 and 5 are equivalent to a higher-education certificate, higher-education diploma or a foundation degree.

City & Guilds Award in Education and Training Level 3This train-the-trainer course is suitable for corporate trainers or for post-compulsory teachers. This qualification is required by many organisations as an industry minimum for trainers. It replaces the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) at Level 3. Applications are welcome from those from within a teaching or training setting and those without teaching experience.

Schedule & Cost3 hours a week, either on Thursday afternoons or evenings, for 16 weeks.

Introductory Award in Education and Training Level 4The Award replaces PTLLS at Level 4 and is suitable for individuals with or without experience, who are interested in developing a career in teaching or training adults. The course includes an exploration of the professional role together with practical planning and delivering teaching and learning sessions using a range of methods and resources. An emphasis is placed on supporting inclusive learning in the teacher or trainer’s setting. Applicants are not required to have teaching hours or teaching experience/placement. This qualification is validated by Canterbury Christ Church University. On successful completion you will be able to progress directly onto Module 2 of the Diploma in Education and Training.

Diploma in Education and Training Level 5The Diploma in Education and Training (formerly Diploma to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS)) is validated by Canterbury Christ Church University. It is designed to meet the training and development needs of teachers in further and/or adult and community education and trainers in the public and private sector, as well as those working with 14-19 year olds in vocational settings. On successful completion, students will be able to practice in the Lifelong Learning Sector in a full teaching role provided they are qualified/experienced in the subject that they intend to teach. The course aims to foster a critical awareness of the roles and responsibilities of the professional, providing participants with a broad understanding of teaching and learning with a strong emphasis on professional reflection for individual development.

The Diploma has specialist pathways for ESOL, Literacy, Numeracy, and teachers of disabled learners. On successful completion you could go on to study a BA (Hons) in Lifelong Learning.

BA (Hons) Lifelong Learning This full BA honours degree course has been designed for professionals working in the Lifelong Learning Sector who want to explore and understand the history, the present and the possible futures of Lifelong Learning at degree level. It is open to all those holding posts in the sector, including managers and administrators. It is not necessary to be in a teaching role, and teaching hours will not be required. However, applicants will require a DTLLS/Diploma in Education & Training award or equivalent credits. The course will be delivered at Canterbury Christ Church University Broadstairs campus.

What Next? On successful completion you will be able to explore the opportunity for progression onto the MA in Professional Learning and Education. Those in a relevant teaching role could undertake specialist subject Diplomas to become teachers of Literacy or Numeracy.

TESOL Certificate Trinity College London Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Level 5 This East Kent College course is an internationally recognised qualification, and is the basic entry requirement to move into the industry.

Once qualified, you will be able to apply for teaching positions in a range of contexts, both at home and abroad. Assignments include study of an unknown language, language awareness tests, observation of experienced teachers and an analysis of an individual learner from the point of view of their language needs and development. You will also teach six hours in a classroom and write a reflective teaching practice journal.

Schedule Thursday evenings from 6-9pm, with some Tuesday evenings initially.

Teaching practice is flexible to fit in with your availability and may be in the morning, afternoon or evening.

Choosing Your Course

The three possible routes for entry to an HNC for an international student are as follows:

1. Direct applicationIf you have, or expect to have, equivalent qualification(s) to the value of between 80 - 120 UCAS points in a relevant subject and IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in writing or a TOEFL internet-based test score of 79 overall with 20 in writing, then you can apply directly to the HNC.

2. IELTS CourseIf you have, or expect to have, equivalent qualification(s) to the value of between 80-120 UCAS points in a relevant subject but do not have IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in writing, then you should apply for an IELTS course at East Kent College or a local language school such as Hilderstone College in Broadstairs.

3. International Foundation YearIf you do not have equivalent qualification(s) to the value of between 80-120 UCAS points in a relevant subject, or IELTS 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in writing then you should apply for an International Foundation Year.

Working in Partnership with Hilderstone College The International Foundation Year is a 1 year course, starting in September, which includes intensive English language tuition as well as study in your chosen subject area: engineering, business, computing or catering and hospitality. Successful completion of the course guarantees entry onto the associated HNC or HND course.

1. Application

1.1 These Terms and Conditions shall apply to the provision of the services (‘Services’) by East Kent College of Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN (“College”) to you (“Student”). No other terms and conditions shall apply to the provision of services unless agreed upon in writing between the College and the Student.

1.2 To avoid doubt, the Terms and Conditions of Study (including all current published College Policies, Codes and Regulations) apply to all students, including those on placements and/or studying at off–campus locations.

1.3 Students should satisfy themselves from reading the available information that the particular course they have chosen meets their requirements before commencing the course.

2. Interpretation

2.1 A “business day” means any day other than a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday.

2.2 The headings in these Terms and Conditions are for convenience only and shall not affect their interpretation.

2.3 Words imparting the singular number shall include the plural and vice-versa.

3. Student Definition

3.1 Every Student of the College, whether full–time or not, must enrol for each course and pay the fees appropriate to their course of study at the College.

3.2 No person shall be deemed to be an enrolled Student unless they have completed and signed a College learning agreement and agreed to meet the liability for the relevant fees, where a Sponsor does not meet the liability on their behalf,

3.3 In all College documentation “Sponsor” is deemed to include Skills Funding Agency; Education Funding Agency; Local Authority/Central Government Schemes; Local Enterprise Companies; Student Finance UK; employers and training boards or agencies.

3.4 In signing the enrolment form and Learning Agreement the Student undertakes to observe these Terms and Conditions (including all current published College Policies, Codes and Regulations) and consents to the College obtaining, recording, holding, processing etc personal data including data of a sensitive nature. Students are responsible for informing the College of any changes to the information provided on enrolment.

4. Fees and Payment

4.1 The course fees (“Fees”) for the Services are set out in the prospectus.

4.2 In addition to the Fees, the College is entitled to recover from the Student reasonable incidental expenses for materials used and for third party goods and/ or services supplied in connection with the Services.

4.3 Liability for fees is incurred at enrolment and the College reserves the right to withdraw any offer for a student who has not paid or arranged, to the satisfaction of the College, payment of fees within a reasonable time.

4.4 The student shall pay the Fees due for the services at or prior to enrolment or otherwise in accordance with any credit terms agreed between the College or their credit agency and the Student via an instalment plan.

4.5 If the Student fails to make payment within the period in sub-Clause 4.4, the College shall have the right to suspend the provision of the Services (where provision of the Services is on-going) until payment is made to the satisfaction of the College.

4.6 The Student remains liable for any fees not paid by a Sponsor (see clause 3.3 for definition of Sponsor).

4.7 If the Student fails to make payment within the period stated in clause 4.4 the College reserves the right to charge the student interest at the rate of 8% per annum on the amount outstanding until payment is made in full.

4.8 Time for payment is of the essence of the contract between the College and the Student.

4.9 Receipts for payment will be issued by the College only at the Student’s request.

4.10 All payments must be made in pounds sterling (£) unless otherwise agreed in writing between the College and the Student.

4.11 The College has a Fees Policy which can be found on the College’s website (www.eastkent.ac.uk) which also includes the College’s policy on refunds. A copy of the Fees Policy can be requested from the Finance Office East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN.

5. Cancelling or Changing Contents of Courses

5.1 The College reserves the right not to run courses where the number of students is considered insufficient or where resources are unavailable or to change the contents of a course where it is considered appropriate by the College to do so.

5.2 Where numbers of students dictate, courses may be amalgamated so that they may comprise a number of subjects, including parts of the student’s chosen subjects and parts of other related subjects.

5.3 All admission to courses is at the final discretion of the Principal.

5.4 The College reserves the right to refuse admission to any course because of restricted availability of facilities due to accommodation or teaching requirements or for any other reason which the College deems it necessary to do so.

5.5 On College courses of more than one year duration, progression to Year 2 (and subsequent years) is dependent on satisfactory performance in the previous year.

6. Liability and Indemnity

6.1 If the College fails (or has failed) to perform the Services with reasonable care and skill it shall carry out all required remedial action at no additional cost to the Student.

6.2 The College shall not be liable to the Student or be deemed to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions by reason of any delay in performing, or any failure to perform, any of the College’s obligations if such delay or failure is due to any cause beyond the College’s reasonable control.

6.3 The Student shall indemnify the College against all damages, costs, claims and expenses suffered by the College arising from any loss or damage to any equipment (including that belonging to third parties) caused by the Student.

6.4 The College does hold third party liability insurance which indemnifies the College with respect to claims from third parties, including students, who have suffered injury, illness, loss or damage arising from the negligence of the College or its employees. However, if there is no negligence, no claim would be accepted by the College or its Insurers.

7. Force Majeure

Neither party shall be liable for any failure or delay in performing their obligations where such failure or delay results from any cause that is beyond the reasonable control of that party. Such causes

include, but are not limited to: power failure, Internet Service Provider failure, industrial action, civil unrest, fire, flood, storms, earthquakes, acts of terrorism, acts of war, governmental action or any other event that is beyond the control of the party in question.

8. Communications

8.1 All notices under these Terms and Conditions shall be in writing and signed by, or on behalf of, the party giving notice (or a duly authorised officer of that party).

8.2 Notices shall be deemed to have been duly given:

(a) when delivered, if delivered by courier or other messenger (including registered mail) during the normal business hours of the recipient;

(b) when sent, if transmitted by fax or email and a successful transmission report or return receipt is generated;

(c) on the fifth business day following mailing, if mailed by national ordinary mail; or

(d) on the tenth business day following mailing, if mailed by airmail.

8.3 All notices under these Terms and Conditions shall be addressed to the Vice Principal at East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN.

9. No Waiver

9.1 No waiver by the College of any breach of these Terms and Conditions by the Student shall be considered as a waiver of any subsequent breach of the same or any other provision.

9.2 No failure or delay on the part of either the College or the Student to exercise any right, power or privilege under these Terms and Conditions shall operate as a waiver of, nor shall any single or partial exercise of any such right, power or privilege preclude, any other or further exercise of any other right, power or privilege.

10. Severance

In the event that one or more of these Terms and Conditions is found to be unlawful, invalid or otherwise unenforceable, that / those provisions shall be deemed severed from the remainder of these Terms and Conditions (which shall remain valid and enforceable).

11. Consumer Rights

Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall affect the Student’s statutory rights as a consumer. In the event the Student has a concern, the College Complaints Procedure is available on the College website (www.eastkent.ac.uk) or from the Corporate Services Office at East Kent College Ramsgate Road Broadstairs Kent CT10 1PN.

12. Law and Jurisdiction

12.1 These Terms and Conditions (including any non-contractual matters and obligations arising there from or associated therewith) shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of England and Wales.

12.2 Any dispute, controversy, proceedings or claim between the Seller and the Buyer relating to these Terms and Conditions (including any non-contractual matters and obligations arising there from or associated therewith) shall fall within the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
