Danny Byrne
BSc (Hons) Community Coaching & Sports Development
Danny called time on his pub career to take a big step into a sports and teaching career. Danny undertook a Foundation Degree, Honours degree and PGCE at University Centre at Blackburn College and is now teaching on the sports degrees himself.
“I used to run a series of pubs but, with the recession, it took an unfortunate turn. I decided I needed a change of career and that’s why I went back into education. I always had an interest in sport so I decided to study a degree.
It was hard work juggling family life and intense study but it has been worth it and I would recommend going back to education for anyone.”

Catherine HarringtonBA (Hons) Education Studies
Catherine graduated with an Upper Second Class BA (Hons) Education Studies degree and is now Head of Brand Development at Peter Jackson’s jewellers.
“One day my partner, who was at UCBC, told me to have a look at the courses and I saw one I wanted to do and it fit in perfectly. The course was hard as the one day a week I was in UCBC were long days and I was still working five days a week.
My qualification has helped me to move up to a different role. I remember feeling nervous about coming back to education and all my friends already had degrees - I really needn’t have worried.”
Iain & Emily HargreavesFdA Public Service Management
Dad Iain Hargreaves followed in daughter Emily’s footsteps and signed up to the same course! Emily said: “We have always been a close family and we just get on with it. We did sit together at first but now we have our own set of friends. Everyone loves him on the course and calls him ‘Pops’ and I am secretly proud of him going back into education. We are quietly competitive but we both want different things and it works well for us.”
Emily is set on becoming a teacher while, for Iain, it’s preparing him for his return to the job market. Iain said: “I want to do a Top-Up qualification at University Centre at Blackburn College after this and it should make me more employable in the current climate. It’s great that Emily and I can do this together.”
