what’s the worst thing you can possibly say to a member of Gen Y? No, not “You’re lazy” – they laugh at that. No, it’s not “Why don’t you actually

pick up the phone and TALK to your friends?” – they have their earbuds in while they Facebook and can’t even hear you.

No, the worst thing you can say, according to Sydney social researcher Michael McQueen – and the worst thing a dear old baby boomer can say to the generation fast rising through the ranks of education and success – is the word “should”. Because, like any impervious four-, five-, or six-year-old, they’ll have their answer ready for you, and you know what that is: “Why?”

It’s kind of wonderful to see how Generation Y confounds, frustrates and irritates the hell out of boomers, Xers and all others. They are smart and confident; articulate and capable and – most maddeningly of all – they seem to be afraid of absolutely nothing.

My bosses scared the hell out of me; the bosses of the boomers made their lives a misery. These guys? They shrug their shoulders, turn on their heels and have to work hard to suppress the depressingly true observation: “Not my problem”.

What is with these guys, and how did they get like this? Well, Gen Y are the children of the boomers, and

what did they teach them? That you should expect your life to be even better than mine: well, a Gen Y-er will heartily agree and they’ll take that, thanks very much. And you stand there gaping in surprise?

Now, as I’m a member of the most neglected, overlooked and ignored generation of any other in Australian history, I am accustomed to making this

entire column about somebody other than me. Hello, fellow Gen-Xers – how are you doing? (Just

thought I’d ask, given nobody else will). But there is also a deeply important reason

a little time should be spent on the generation that will inherit the Earth (we’ll apparently get a little bit of time in the big chair, but the Ys

will apparently jump straight over us.)One reason is that they, as the children of the

boomers – the generation that changed everything they touched and pretty much ended up getting anything they wanted – they will be a force to be reckoned with. Another is that as technology converges into a synthesised point of form, function, desire and ability, this generation – more than any – is comfortable with it, understands it and will end up driving it.

One observation that McQueen made that struck me like a lightning bolt was the instinctive choice that Gen Y makes about life, work and which one is sometimes more important.

I felt foolish that I’d never realised this before.Whereas my generation knew that you only proved

your worth in the workplace by performing above and beyond the call of duty, by being more co-operative and able than anyone else, by offering to do it for nothing and then doing it day after day, Gen Y won’t cop that for a second. Why?

Because they saw their parents – particularly their fathers – do all this before them and they are scared by it. They saw fathers driving themselves in the workplace, sometimes literally to death, most often to the death of the family itself as dinners were missed, school concerts were skipped and weekends were spent at the office or on the phone. They saw it, they lived it and they hated it. They are never doing that to themselves, their friends and their families again.

So when you say we all have to work back tomorrow night, and Gen Y calmly tells you that she can’t – because she has her rock-climbing class, or her roller derby session, or her friend’s birthday drinks – don’t mark her down as lacking work ethic.

Instead, chalk her up as a good learner: she saw exactly how you played it. And she’s not going to make the same mistake. \

tHE bright, hot bulbs of the photographer’s lighting rig play on Liz Stiles’ face and figure like high-noon sunshine. Instead of shrinking from the glare, she opens up to it, as if it will give her a tan. She offers poses, takes direction

and does it all with an uncommon grace. In this, the most naked of environments, with a

guy behind the lens telling you to be natural, and a journalist watching on keenly, taking notes, you get to see a subject truly exposed.

Often, even the most confident crumble. They become docile or totally lobotomised. Or they get cranky. But not Stiles, who is bantering with The Weekly Review’s photographer Jules Tahan and changing in and out of a vast battery of costumes with supermodel speed.

For a young actress whose big break came as understudy for lead character Glinda (Lucy Durack) in the Melbourne version of the hit Broadway musical Wicked, Stiles is doing a pretty good job of being the extroverted star. Tahan has put on some Sting to relax the room. He needn’t have bothered.

“Is this Sting?” Stiles asks, as Fields of Gold eases out of Tahan’s MacBook Pro, which is flashing up shots of her as she talks.

“Oh, I love him; his voice is so relaxing. You know, I have a funny story about Sting. My mum was working in a bar in London in the ’80s and he tried to pick her up. He told her he was in a band and she said: ‘The Police? Sorry, who is that?’ She didn’t go.” “So Sting could have been your dad?” Tahan offers helpfully. Stiles considers this Sliding Doors proposition for a second and then laughs. We all do. Click click click.

It’s fair to say everybody wins. I have a quote, Tahan has the cover shot in the can – “Got it!” he shouts, raising his right hand, with a mite less pomp than Austin Powers – and Liz is having the time of her life.

After the shoot, which has run over an hour-and-a-half, we walk out of the studio into the bright spring sunshine.

curtain calls

Liz Stiles is stepping out of the shadows of her role as understudy in Wicked to star in musical Grey Gardens. Andrew McUtchen follows her into the sun.

6 The weekly review \ NOVEMbEr 9, 2011

Page 7: HDV-Heidelberg-20111109-Edition77

After eight Wicked shows of a week for two years, Stiles thought that she might have cured herself of musical theatre, the discipline she had trained for. She wanted to skill up in “pure acting” and move away from “singing big dance numbers”.

“I felt like I was giving up on it. I looked at the other girls going overseas with Wicked and you have to take your hat off to them – it’s a massive effort. It’s like being a professional athlete. I didn’t feel cut out for it and I knew deep down that it wasn’t what I wanted.”

Grey Gardens is still a musical, but it feels “more like a play that happens to have songs. They allow the characters to basically soliloquise to the audience and share their innermost feelings”.

The riches-to-rags plot, based on real events, again proves that truth can be stranger, and sadder, than fiction. It examines the lives of Jackie Onassis’ cousin Little Edie and aunt, Little Edie’s mother Edith Bouvier Beale, in two truly dichotomous acts, set 32 years apart.

The first half of the play is an imagined telling of the pair’s heyday in 1941. It is set over a mere six hours, as the women prepare for Little Edie’s engagement party. She has the world at her feet and society in the palm of her hand. Edith senior does, however, put the mother back into smother as she “schemes to keep her pretty little bird from flying the nest”, Stiles says.

Regardless, Little Edie has a marriage to Joseph Kennedy jnr in her sights as well as a move to the Big Apple, New York, where she dreams of being an actress. Together they live in a grand mansion in East Hampton. Life is peachy and full of possibility. Press pause.

The second act picks up the story in 1973 and is based on an actual documentary (of the same name) filmed in 1975. The two Ediths still live in the mansion, but it has degenerated into a ramshackle haunted house, overflowing with human detritus, cats and even raccoons. The pieces of the puzzle explaining how two shining socialites have become, in Stiles’ words, “pretty much crazy cat ladies” are slowly assembled.

Stiles is now dressed down, trading the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis-era summer dress for tight designer jeans and a breezy blouse.

Her choice of early-1960s glamour wardrobe was no mistake. Stiles is to embody one of the era’s “It girls” when she plays the character of Little Edie, the eccentric cousin of Jackie Onassis, in the upcoming musical theatre production of Grey Gardens. Known around society circles as “Body Beautiful Beale”, Little Edie was a knockout. So is Stiles. The 25-year-old is in heels today, and commandingly so. “My whole family’s tall. I’m actually the shortest of us!” she says, pretty much meeting my 188 centimetres eye to eye.

Choosing a Greville Street café with outdoor tables to take in the weather, we install ourselves, order a latté each – hers soy – and Stiles begins by admitting that yes, it was no fluke, she likes photo shoots: “My friend’s a photographer and she practises on me. It’s helped me see all the little things I do and to get comfortable.”

As for the pressure of being in the spotlight, Stiles makes the salient point that being an understudy is in many ways more challenging than being the star.

“The first time I played Glinda I hadn’t worn some of the costumes; I hadn’t ever run the show from beginning to end in a technical context,” she says.

And how did it feel? “Imagine being on a treadmill that goes for three hours. You have to keep running, keep singing, keep changing clothes and do it all without losing your breath. I was terrified, because I couldn’t stop even for a second; that treadmill is flying!”

Stiles learnt of her promotion in enough time to have her mother fly down from Sydney to watch the show. Her only Glinda glitch came when she actually paused to take stock of what was happening.

“I walked on stage to start a new section and it occurred to me that I was doing it, that I was not in the ensemble any more, I was Glinda. Rob Mills was just looking at me and, after an awkward pause, which luckily suited the moment in the script, I blurted out my lines and thought, ‘Get back on the treadmill’.”

T he role of Little Edie is Stiles’ biggest in her own right since graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Her resumé consists of “little bit

parts” in TV programs such as Offspring and Winners and Losers and theatre productions such as Hello Again, which analysed the difference between sex and intimacy. As the chat continues and we discuss her Grey Gardens co-stars, particularly Stiles’ on-stage mother in this production to be played by the legendary Pamela Rabe, you can see her getting steadily more energised, perhaps a little nervous, about the prospect.

“I’m very aware of Pamela’s calibre,” Stiles says, nodding. “I remember seeing her in a production of Mother Courage. She was playing a man’s role and I thought she was incredible. I was a bit nervous when I knew I had to read with her in the callbacks for Grey Gardens. I thought, I can either stand here like an idiot with my mouth open, or I can just do the work; she’s an actress, I’m an actress. I’d call the thought of working with her exciting more than daunting.”

Stiles first saw Grey Gardens on Broadway in early December, 2006. She had travelled to New York to celebrate her 21st birthday with her mother and a friend and wanted to catch as much theatre as possible. At the time she was two years through a musical theatre degree at WAAPA, which Stiles describes as “different to the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) because it’s this remote little melting pot, where everybody has to rely on each other”.

Stiles believes all WAAPA graduates have a bond, “even me and Hugh” she says laughing, naming the academy’s most famous graduate, Hugh Jackman.

In a coincidence that mirrors the path of Little Edie, Stiles returned to New York in 2010 to do a three-month acting course at the New York Film Academy.

“As a musical it was unlike anything I’d seen before and Christine Ebersole was amazing,” Stiles says of the American actress who, with extraordinary range, played ‘Big’ Edith in the first act and Little Edie in the second.

Rabe is well equipped to take on the same challenge in this version. “I was captivated by the songs and the two parts of the show, which span such different times in the characters’ lives,” Stiles says.

“I couldn’t believe these two women had spent their entire lives in the same house. The emotional effect that it has on young Edie is fascinating, because she continues to wear the clothes she did in the first act. She literally lives in the past.”

Indeed, if the overarching theme of Grey Gardens could be distilled to one quote, it would be William Faulkner’s: “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

“The two women just hide in their mansion and shut things out,” Stiles says. “It’s an incredible mechanism as human beings that we have to pretend that things aren’t happening; that time isn’t passing.

“The first act really explores why the second act happens; why these women ended up this way. What kinds of events have taken place? And what kind of emotional storm have they been through to end up as recluses living in this house?

“When you see all that’s occurred you stop seeing them as crazy people. I feel such empathy for them. It’s the first big role that’s been all me. I’m going into it knowing that it’s totally my responsibility to do the best I can with this.”

If humility, sensitivity and a degree of self-deprecation are all part of a successful actor’s foundation, then Stiles is on solid ground. The understudy is advancing and she takes a little time to consider before answering the final question: What does it take to be great?

“For me, being great means having the opportunity to explore lots of different characters and to do them really well,” Stiles says.

“If you get swept up with what other people think of you and take that perception on as proof of your greatness, then you’re going to spend your entire life clambering for compliments. I think I’m still at the very beginning of what I hope will be a longer journey for me. I’ve always had the passion and the focus, but now with Grey Gardens, I have the challenge in front of me. And I’m ready.” \

Two boutiques in Albert Park are doing things differently, writes JAne RoccA.

W hen art and fashion meet, anything can happen, and in the capable hands of creative and business partners Yenny Huber and Ricardo Amare, the fusing of two loves comes naturally.

Vienna-born and now Melbourne-based artist Huber and Mexican-born Amare recently opened Nomad Project – a place where fashion and art schmooze, hang out and share their secrets.

The boutique is a new addition to the strip in Bridport Street, Albert Park. It brings with it a sense of adventure and combines the seasoned travels of its owners.

The set-up – more like an art space than your traditional boutique – is exactly what makes Nomad Project something a little left of centre. It doesn’t run off course by doing so; instead, here you’re invited to dream a little, learn a lot and find interesting fashion labels that you won’t stumble across just anywhere.

The pair have lived abroad, seen the world and brought an abundance of worldly knowledge to the fashion stage in their shop.

Huber, who spent time in Paris, Vienna and the Northern Territory before settling in Melbourne, is big on supporting emerging designers and established ones with a distinct point of difference.

That’s why it is only here that you will find Mexican brands such as Maca made by Martacarmela Sotelo – an interior designer-cum-contemporary jewellery aficionado. She uses recyclable materials to create unique pieces that rely on interesting weaves in earthy and sorbet colours.

Then there’s Maka Bags – brightly embroidered pieces that fuse avant-garde design with the collaboration of village women who sew the floral creations by hand. “It blends contemporary with traditional methods and supports the sustainability of that culture, which is important to me,” says Huber.

Fitting in perfectly with the nomad theme is Vietnamese-born, Netherlands-raised and now Paris-based designer Xuan-Thu Nguyen. Her prêt-à-porter collection is only available here. “She blends all those different heritage influences in her work and her work is labor intensive,” says Huber. “I have seen her stitching flowers all day long and I know she is one of those amazing dedicated designers.”

For contemporary and angular lines, there’s Camilla Wellton’s gracious clothing. She also makes an eco-couture range for the sustainable at heart.

“Ricardo and I have always been passionate about sharing our cultures, and particularly because we have lived around the world it was important to bring the worlds we have seen to this space,” says Huber.

The two-storey building also runs as a food space (a tapas touch) and has an artists’ workshop area upstairs.

A few doors up the street is Paloma Bleu, run by an ambitious 26-year-old Laura Williamson. She worked in London for Paul & Joe and managed a Bettina Liano shop in Chapel Street before opening her own business.

“What better time to open a shop than the worst time?” she asks.

Williamson handpicks everything from the gorgeous recycled clutch creations by Clare Viver (a former journalist-cum-designer who makes her bags in Los Angeles) to brands such as Lover, Karen Walker and Band of Outsiders. Here it’s all about finding something you won’t necessarily see everyone else wearing.

She heads overseas on buying trips and, thanks to a dedicated customer, found out about Annelore – a tiny boutique in New York’s West Village where a young designer, who mostly makes great silk party dresses, is a cult hit.

All her dresses are hand-stitched in New York and not a corner is cut in the process. “It is very feminine and womanly. Every piece is made in Manhattan; she works with an Italian

seamstress. All silk-lined and they just walk out the door,” says Williamson of the brand that is

favoured among celebrities such as Gretchen Mol, Julianne Moore and Stella Tennant.

“Karen Walker also races out the door,” she says. “They are easy to wear and not so fashion forward that you have to put a lot of effort into it.

She does a drop waist with a ruffle and any woman looks good in it. Her proportions all work, and

women remain loyal to the brand they know works.Inspired to name her shop after a beach club you will find

between Nice and Monaco, Paloma Bleu is all about chic wear – lots of dresses, beautiful blouses, pleated skirts and accessories with a unique bent.

“I didn’t want a store with the same labels as all the other stores in Melbourne; there would be no point,” says Williamson.

“I buy a lot of labels overseas and saw a gap in the market, and that’s what works for me.” \

“Beauty is truth, truth beauty.”

RichaRd PaRkeR has been

enamored of that line in John Keats’s Ode to a Grecian Urn since his teens. To the everyday person Parker (left) is a nobody. But if you are in the beauty industry he is definitely the hottest new thing and he’s ruffling some very well-groomed feathers.

I met Parker for the first time at a nondescript café in Clifton Hill. He is a tall, debonair man, who dresses to please himself but also to impress. He has a calm, self-assured manner that draws you in. I was curious to peel away the layers and find out what makes Parker tick.

In beauty anyone wanting to sell a range is on the prowl for media attention. I have been sold more clichés and seen more hype than my fair share, but Parker is different.

He is hesitant of self-promotion; in fact he was not too keen to do the interview. He felt his range is the hero and should get all the credit. I agree the Rationale range is incredible, but more of that later.

Unlike others, Parker is not trying to sell just another beauty cream. He’s researched and created something unique – a first in many aspects.

“Medical skin care and the medical space is a very

rarefied atmosphere,” he says. “The range and company have scientific integrity and we deal in absolutes – we can absolutely treat a concern or we absolutely can’t. This space is in its infancy and the beauty of it is that it’s a continuum.

“You can start off with cosmeceuticals and, if that doesn’t work, there is always a medical solution. We deliver results very well.”

I am stoked as Parker comes alive. His passion and enthusiasm are unbridled and he is prickling with frustration.

“There will be no more historic beauty icons like Helena Rubenstein and Elizabeth Arden, who create a hope in a jar. The time has come when consumers demand results. Live by the sword or die by the sword; that is increasingly the war cry. If we don’t deliver on the promises we make, we fail.”

His frankness is refreshing in an industry wrapped up in its own spin. He explains that consumers are savvier than credited and can see through gloss and glamour claims.

He acknowledges consumers want to be seduced. “The current beauty landscape at department stores for luxury skin care is very seductive,” Parker says. “These companies do it exceptionally well. In the medical skin care space we are lagging behind. We clearly are not seductive and seduction sells,” he says.

“The No.1 cause of unhealthy skin, I am convinced, is ignorance – the lack of knowledge on the skin’s ageing

process and true options to turn around your skin.”Parker confesses he was not blessed with good skin genes.

While his siblings had perfect skin he had acne. “I was obsessed with attaining good skin. This obsession made me trawl through medical and dermatological journals when I was at university and it propelled me into excelling in cosmetic chemistry.

“I was determined to research for a perfect formula and regime that could be used by anyone and everyone, and I came up with Rationale’s Essential Six.

Parker says: “Documented medical research shows there are six things everyone should do. Before us no one has put

these ingredients together as a single regime. “In all humility, what we have done has become a

landmark in the industry.”And clinical dermatologists agree. Belinda Welsh, from Sunbury Private

Hospital, says: “The range works because it has remained faithful to containing only those active

ingredients, in adequate concentrations, that are backed up by the science.

“The core Essential Six range can be used by all skin types at all ages. In an industry that is hopelessly overburdened with products, this brand is artful in its ability to deliver great results without the fuss.”

Plastic surgeon David Chong goes further. He not only fully supports the science and the product but extends his admiration to Parker himself.

“One cannot help but be reminded of Steve Jobs. Richard listens to you intently and with a sincerity rarely experienced these days. His passion for skin and his care is

beyond words. The range is revolutionary; cutting edge but, most importantly, courageous.”

All the accolades in the world are pointless if the products don’t reach the masses. Parker says he’s working on that.

“We have spent so much time getting the formulas right and working within the medical field. We have fine-tuned the range and we are ready. We have enough positive testaments to charge forward.”

The sparkle in Parker’s eyes is dazzling. Is he the chosen one that the beauty industry has been waiting for to part the counters and lead the market to a new promised land? Could there be hope yet for an industry that is spiralling out of control on its own rhetoric?

With Parker’s determination, dedication and enthusiasm, the future of Rationale is bright. \

Paul Jewson has a supplier on an island off the east coast

of New Zealand who will deliver line-caught fish within 36 hours. “Yes, there’s an air-mile issue but there are only 600 people living in the place, it’s sustainable, the population is low and the waters are relatively unfished,” he says.

Free-range, organic produce, sourced with deference to food miles – within 100 kilometres of Melbourne – is the mantra at his eight-week-old restaurant, Fitzrovia, but Jewson is uncompromising on quality too. He can’t find anything he prefers to Pyengana cheddar from Tasmania, and when Moreton Bay bugs are available, he has to have some.

Melbourne-born Jewson spent 20 years in London, working at Mezzo, The Bluebird and River Café, and later with a catering company, The Admirable Crichton, cooking and designing events for stars and royalty. For him, the most satisfying part of being back home is the quality and availability of fabulous ingredients.

“Economies of scale have changed the relationships between farmer and chef in the UK, but here it’s pretty easy to get your hands on first-class produce,” he says.

“I just love that ‘farm-direct’ relationship. I can get on the phone and speak to the daughter of the guy who runs the farm. Farmers will even come into the city for you.”

Jewson and his partner, Italian-born Marco Pugnaloni, returned to Australia in 2009 and ran Outpost Café in South Yarra, with an eye on the Melbourne market and plans for their own venture. Fitzrovia is named after both its St Kilda street location and the bohemian neighbourhood in London’s West End where the pair once lived.

Jewson’s cooking style is influenced by the daring, earthy flavours of provincial Italy, with a decidedly British twist. Pugnaloni runs the front of house.

Liz Milroy, formerly the head chef at St Ali, runs breakfast and lunch and Jewson mans the kitchen at dinner. The menu is a collaboration of ideas and similar cooking styles, he says.

Breakfast choices include grilled asparagus with Istra Daylesford dry-cured bacon crumble and poached eggs; house-made cranberry, almond and apricot bread with vanilla yoghurt and Melbourne CBD honey or house-smoked Tasmanian ocean trout with white bean hummus.

At lunch there’s coconut-poached Bacchus Marsh free-range chicken salad with nuoc cham, cashews and snow pea sprouts, or delicate, house-made fishcakes with a zesty Asian pickled cucumber salad and a slippery, salty textured wakame tartare sauce.

Imagination, use of technique and an uncanny balance of flavours define Jewson’s style.

His superb “Port Fairy octopus carpaccio, anchovy, orange and thyme” is completely undersold on the menu.

Jewson blanches and then poaches the octopus, wrapping its legs into a tight boudin blanc, then slices

it thinly and dresses it with a stunning anchoide – anchovies, orange zest, oregano, thyme and sourdough bread pureed with olive oil to form a thick, slighty grainy, salty, citrusy mayonnaise.

It’s prettily dressed with micro herbs and a final defining splash of olive oil and citrus.

Jewson says the dinner menu will change regularly – but diners should beg him to keep this dish on it all summer long.

“Potato gnocchi with spinach” sounds rather ordinary too, but there’s just enough flour to bind the superior pieces of pasta, pan-fried until crisp and coated with burnt butter then tossed with portobello mushrooms and sun-dried porchini, finished with a lashing of garlic, wilted spinach and toasted pine nuts.

A roast zucchini brik with ancient grain salad is a harmonious marriage of vivid flavours. Finely shaved zucchini is wrapped around butternut pumpkin, oregano and Mossvale blue cheese, then rewrapped in the light Middle-Eastern-style pastry.

The bejewelled bed of quinoa beneath is studded with almonds, pomegranate seeds, pepitas, dates, mint, cumin and coriander, and given bite with cayenne pepper, a light soy dressing and a chipotle labne.

A creamy, excellent slow-roasted pork belly with caramelised sweet potato mash is enhanced by an apple, sour cherry and fennel chutney.

Although it’s a classic marriage of flavours, it’s anything but pedestrian and would go on my “please keep” list too.

Jewson has plans to dress up the dessert menu, but hopefully it will still include “Adam’s ballistic baked cheesecake”, a standout New York-style dairy delight, and a rather good double-chocolate tart.

I’d like to eat more of Jewson’s food – for breakfast with the St Ali coffee, for lunch overlooking Albert Park and for dinner, regularly. This new St Kilda diner will become a firm local favourite. \

Take breakfast in the parlour, lunch on the terrace and dinner under the pressed-metal ceilings at this converted Federation boarding house overlooking Albert Park. Separate spaces blend seamlessly on different levels, connected by a black-and-white provincial cottage theme. The unifying strand is the fresh-food bounty. In the smart, white-tiled entrance area, the counter is loaded with cakes, pastries and baguettes; upstairs, on the terracotta-tiled terrace, timber crates of vegetables await use; in the more formal dining room on the level above, bowls of fruit grace sideboards; and in the bustling country-style kitchen, herbs dangle between pots and pans. \

DECANTER\ BOUTIQUE BEATS BULK,

FINDS BEN THOMAS

BUY a bottle of wine with its origin sketchily referred to as “south-east Australia”,

and the chances are it comes from South Australia’s Riverland. Buy a cask and the odds are even greater.

The Riverland is our biggest wine region – more than 21,000 hectares of irrigated vines provide a lush green carpet in the arid bushland – but for its size it has a really low profile. Things are, however, about to change.

As Australia’s wine glut continues and the dollar remains high, wine grape growers all over the country have lost contracts with the big wine companies and have been forced to evaluate where they stand in the scheme of Australian wine.

The Riverland has suffered along with rest of the country, with many growers choosing to ride out the storm and others pulling up stumps.

Some have opted to look for a point of difference and diversify, growing stronger through adversity.

Several of these growers have formed the Riverland Alternative Wine Group, which is pursuing varieties outside the shiraz and chardonnay set as the region reinvigorates itself. The group has about 20 members and includes scientists, vignerons, winemakers and marketers who are are looking for varieties that suit the region’s hot climate.

It is early days, but grapes such as vermentino, fiano, montepulciano, tempranillo and nero d’Avola are all thriving and producing interesting, quality wines.

These varietals have also brought about a different philosophy of grape growing in an area that has previously seen large-scale, mechanical grape farming.

Rather than being paid a few hundred dollars a tonne for their mainstream grapes, the growers are getting a premium for their alternative grapes and can afford to spend more time tending their vines.

This extra TLC is helping grow premium-quality –

rather than commodity – grapes, which is good for the growers and the region’s profile.

“There’s a future in these grapes and the growers can see that,” says Ashley Ratcliff, viticultural and winery manager of Oxford Landing and the chairman of Riverland Alternative Wine Group.

“The winery-grower relationship has never been stronger. In the past, big companies pick up and drop growers like yo-yos, depending on their needs.”

Bassham Vermentino 2011(Riverland) $18; 11%★★★ ½

Bruce and Val Bassham are fourth-generation growers who have turned their hands to creating wines from their organically grown vineyards. The wine is alive with aromas of tropical fruits, pear, pretty florals and grassy notes. Food-friendly, savoury flavours with lemon – juice, zest and pith – white nectarine and dried herb are fresh and tasty. it’s slightly frizzante, too, which adds another degree of freshness in the mouth, and it finishes crisp and dry. To order, call (08) 8588 1480.

Taylors Winemaker’s Project Vermentino 2011 (Riverland) $18; 10.5%★★★★

Winemaker Helen McCarthy pays tribute to her growers, Bruce and Val Bassham, in an informative little booklet that comes hanging on the bottle. This wine undergoes fermentation in two stages with different yeasts that add length and aromatics along with dryness. it’s certainly aromatic, with fresh-cut pear, nectarine, florals, lemon and saline minerality. it’s textural, with zippy acidity and a nice grip in balance with the vibrant flavours.

Salena Estate Ink Series Vermentino 2011(Riverland) $15; 11%★★★★

salena estate operates under the premise that good wines start in the vineyard. i couldn’t agree more. The wines’ aromas have an interesting complexity with notes of citrus – pith and zest – pear, peach and quince. There’s typical vermentino florals in the mix, too. Vibrant flavours of citrus, minerals and green melon with savoury characters lead to a crisp and textural mouthfeel and a nice line of acidity. it finishes full of life, with mineral and citrus notes to the fore.

Food match \ Chicken with fennel and saffron

Yalumba Y Series Vermentino (Riverland) $14.95; 11.5% ★★★★

A new addition to one of Australia’s most consistent bargain wine ranges – the Y series. picked in the cool of night to retain freshness, this displays pure aromas and intense flavours of nectarine, melon, pears, quince, slatey minerality and the lift of citrus zest. it’s fresh all right, with bright acidity, a creamy texture and chalky grip. it’s easy drinking, too, with a complex finish of green melon, pear, citrus and yeasty lees notes. Vermentino is the star

The biggest success with hot-climate varietals has been vermentino, a late-ripening Italian grape that’s widely planted in Sardinia and Liguria in Italy and France’s Corsica and Provence.

Vermentino has a great ability to retain refreshing acidity and structure as it ripens slowly in the baking sun.

Better still, it’s naturally low in alcohol, making it a great alternative to sav blanc when you’re looking for a refreshing white on a hot day.

Vermentino’s flavours and aromas, including blossom, apple and pear, tropical fruits, bay, dried herbs and melon, are rich and generous, while minerality and zesty citrus notes balance out these flavours.

The early success of vermentino has given this large but almost anonymous region a true sense of identity. \

There’s not only a closer bond between grower and winery; everyone is seeing that there’s more to the premium wines than just “wine of south-east Australia”.

It seems there’s no shortage of demand in the alternatives. \

W ith a 10-year wait between albums, musician and fashion icon Stevie Nicks is ready to don her 1960s gypsy outfits for another shot of life in the limelight.

The 63-year-old, formerly of supergroup Fleetwood Mac, has reacquainted herself with the gothic romanticism that made her famous in the ’70s and has chosen founding member of Eurythmics, Dave Stewart, to work with on her new album, In Your Dreams.

They rekindled a friendship that stems back to the early ’80s and spent 12 months in her 1930s two-storey Santa Monica mansion perfecting the album’s message.

Few women in rock’n’roll live to tell, but Nicks is an exception. She has survived the sex, drugs and rock’n’roll and isn’t ashamed to discuss the finer detail.

Perhaps enough time has passed that she sees no reason to hold back – being open about the songs she wrote in her heyday and who they were intended for and, more recently, her decision to remain single rather than submit to a married life.

This is a woman who did a stint at the Betty Ford Centre in Los Angeles in the 1980s to overcome her cocaine dependency (which started about the time of 1977’s Rumours and lasted 12 years) and to expel the demons that became her life, thanks to addictive tranquillisers prescribed to aid her recovery.

Fame intercepted with tragedy, and slowly this rising star would spiral out of control. Oddly, she penned some of her greatest songs during this reckless period – hits such as Dreams and Gold Dust Woman both appeared on Rumours, which sold multimillion copies worldwide.

Even as her debut solo album Bella Donna, released in 1981, catapulted her to further fame, she was tragically snorting the profits and oblivious to the damage that was really taking place.

Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac with then-partner Lindsey Buckingham in 1974. It came after their stint as a folk-rock band called Fritz based in San Francisco (which supported Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin).

The pair later formed Buckingham Nicks, but after one album that musical outfit was shelved – until that fateful call from Mick Fleetwood to join Fleetwood Mac. His band had already released 10 albums but had not experienced a No.1. That was all about to change.

“It’s been a wild ride,” says Nicks. “It also feels a lifetime behind me. So much has happened since then. And now, with this album, I have a chance to focus on something new rather than old.”

When she called Stewart to make In Your Dreams, it was a carefully considered pitch. Word has it the pair even had a romantic fling back in the day. But enough water had passed under the bridge for it to not cause any strange feelings. They met again during the filming of a TV pilot that Stewart was part of, and for which Nicks was being interviewed, a few years back. “At the end of the interview he said, ‘There’s a piano, play something’. So I sat and played Rhiannon and he joined me in this 15-minute rendition and it was spectacular,” says Nicks.

“I marked it in my head that the next time I do a record, whether it’s a Fleetwood Mac one or one for myself, that I would call Dave to produce it because he is perfect. He really understands and gets my music.”

Nicks and Stewart had worked together before, in 1985, when Stewart was co-producing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Southern Accents album. The classic

Petty song Don’t Come Around Here No More was written one night in the studio (a song Stewart started but hadn’t completed) and was developed by Nicks, who came up with the title – apparently directed at her then boyfriend Joe Walsh from the Eagles. But it was Petty who fleshed out the song to become a beautiful ballad.

“I couldn’t ask for it back,” says Nicks. “Tom had made that song. It was so beautiful that I couldn’t say, ‘Hey, I want to sing that for myself’. So I said, ‘Tom, you take the song, it was intended for you’.”

Nicks toured with Petty in 1981, the same year her debut solo album was released. The pair also

sang a duet, Stop Dragging My Heart Around, taken from that record as the first single, which made it to No.1 and was written by Petty for Nicks.

With Stewart now living in Los Angeles with his photographer wife and two children,

working with Nicks seemed like a viable option.“We did everything in my two-storey house and it

was a blast,” says Nicks. “We started in January 2010 and involved our friends who dropped in for dinners. It was so much fun that when it was over I was very sad. Because when you start doing press and touring, you know the real creative process is no longer.”

Songs such as Soldier’s Angel sees Buckingham play guitar while Fleetwood plays drums. It’s inspired by Nicks’ regular hospital visits to injured American troops who had fought in Afghanistan and Iraq.

When she reflects on her halcyon days, Nicks is rather laid back about the ups and downs. “It was destiny that Mick Fleetwood heard a song that Lindsey and I were on and called us, and after joining Fleetwood Mac that it

would become one of the most successful bands around the world. It was fate. I wouldn’t change a thing; it was all pretty perfect after all these years.”

In Your Dreams lives up to any of Nicks’ 1970s and ’80s hits. It’s gutsy, defiant and combines hearty ballads with solid rock moments. What’s more, her signature husky vocal range hasn’t lost its verve.

It’s songs such as Cheaper Than Free that really hit a nerve for Nicks. It’s a beautiful track about being in love and wishing for partnership rather than solitude. Her songs are full of longing but, in reality, Nicks is less bothered about being on her own.

“I decided in the early ’90s that I wasn’t going to go down that road,” she says of marriage. Even so, she was briefly married to widower Kim Anderson.

“It would have been hard for me to marry a really big rock’n’roll guy and to wait for him at home. It would drive me nuts. I couldn’t handle him being on the road and not knowing what is happening out there and that every day he is away we could be growing further apart.”

The dreamy blonde who became the queen of excess is a distant memory for now. “I think it was a case of being tempted by two evils,” she says of finding fame but succumbing to drugs. With her runaway hippie look of chiffon sleeves and pagan dresses, Nicks might have once fallen into the arms of temptation but says some of her best songs are still to come. “I was pretty messed up during the most successful part of Fleetwood Mac. I can’t remember all the details, but what’s great today is that I can think clearly and have another chance. Now that’s a gift. To be able to write and work with Dave is a gift. I am one lucky survivor.” \

worth attending a tour of the premises – the bakery’s historic Scotch oven is more than 140 years old, a legacy of the time when the residents of a town would share a single large oven for all their cooking needs. Most Scotch ovens were destroyed in tandem with the rise of supermarkets, so be mindful of how rare this one is when you’re being warmed by it in winter or while attending one of RedBeard’s excellent sourdough-baking courses. \

A hotel fire means that accommodation is no longer available, but new owners are in the process of restoring it, and the stables these days are more focused on things edible than equine. The food is good, the gardens are fun, and it’s relaxing to pick a cider from the list and enjoy it in the well-maintained gardens or in front of the fireplace. \

ColliBan FoodsToRe18 Market Street, Trentham, 5424 1774www.collibanfoodstore.com While it’s also proud of local fare, Colliban Foodstore casts its nets a little wider. A lot wider, actually, with the emphasis being on quality no matter the origins of the food. Half retail-produce shop, half fine-dining restaurant, it’s the sort of place where you can pick up milk, bread, eggs – and Champagne. And then, if you’re feeling peckish, you can sit down to a multi-course meal and have the knowledgeable staff pair your selections with the perfect wine. After this repast, it was a good thing our digs were a short walk away. \

Trentham is a seemingly sleepy town, happy to idly seduce you as you drive through on your way to Daylesford or one of its bigger gold-mining cousins.

But should your flirtation bloom into a dalliance, you’ll find much to enjoy.

Despite early excitement when Trentham was first settled in the 1850s, wood proved more abundant than gold. A healthy local economy soon grew from the provision of timber to neighbouring towns, and Trentham was home to a sawmill scene that could aptly be described as buzzing.

Fear not, however, the Wombat State Forest is still there, and its walking trails are an excellent idea if you have more than a day or two to spend in the region.

A wombat also takes pride of place in the town square – a statue, that is, maintaining a silent vigil over the Trentham Farmers’ Market, which is held on the third Saturday of every month. The market is in full swing when we arrive, with lots of fresh produce.

Our first stop is at the RedBeard Bakery, where we sample a platter composed of local delights and receive a lesson on the role that the bakery’s Scotch oven had to play in Trentham’s early days.

Then it’s time to check in at the luxurious Twigs on High, a shopfront on the town’s main street converted into excitingly eclectic accommodation.

Dinner is at the Colliban Foodstore, where quality food from all over the world can be enjoyed on the premises or in your home.

The next day we are shown around the iconic Cosmopolitan Hotel. The fire damage of years before is still evident, but now lends character to an ongoing restoration process and the bustle from what used to be the stables, now functioning as a gourmet restaurant.

We spent a day and a half in Trentham, but even moderately intrepid explorers will have much to discover in the region.

The likes of Kyneton, Woodend and Lancefield are close by, with Bacchus Marsh and Macedon a quick drive away – but Trentham is only as sleepy as your appetite, for adventure or its fine cuisine.

4 3 2T uscan-style villas are a dime a dozen in this city. But while most sit on blocks along suburban streets, this stunning

yellow-ochre residence occupies a much more authentic locale. It may not

be in the rolling hills of Chianti, but this 6025-square metre property certainly looks the part. Double wrought-iron gates off exclusive Rosehill Road open to an expansive rise of manicured green lawns.

A paved driveway snakes past established pencil pines and peppercorns to the stately double-storey residence perched atop the hill. From down here, it makes a picture worthy of any postcard.

The house, built in the late 1990s, is not so bold as to mimic a 16th-century Palladio-esque design. Rather the architecture is a clean and contemporary take on the classics. There are columns and terraces but none of the ornate detail that can so easily look kitsch in replica rather than original form.

The entrance to the house is similarly stunning. A foyer looks up to an elegant dining meals and dining space and a double-height landing with sweeping stairwell. Garden views through large windows are framed by stylish swag-and-tails drapes. Terracotta floor tiles give the high aesthetic a relaxed and rustic edge.

There is a powder room on hand for dinner guests. A study sunken away from the landing is the ideal base for those who work from home.

Double doors lead to the family room, and there is also kitchen access from the dining room. The floor plan flows effortlessly and has obviously been designed with entertaining in mind.

Cook up a storm for two or 20 people in the large kitchen. It has metre after metre of black granite benchtops and the full suite of Gaggenau appliances, including steamer, grill, deep-fryer and plate warmer. Although large, the kitchen occupies but a corner of this vast family hub, which looks out through gorgeous bay windows to the outdoor entertainment area.

This space is what makes 4 Rosehill Road a cut above the rest.

The open-air dining terrace is not only covered, the roof has lights and ceiling fans. Nearby there is a full outdoor kitchen including built-in Weber barbecue, commercial fridges and wood-fired pizza oven. Like its indoor counterpart, this kitchen is laden in black granite. The whole extended famiglia is unlikely to leave straight after lunch. There is a fully tiled pool and spa nearby. There is also a good-sized back lawn where the kids can play in the cubby and run amok.

A bathroom with shower is ideally positioned just inside the back entrance so they can clean up before coming inside.

Upstairs, the kids have their own retreat, which also acts a buffer between the three large children’s

bedrooms and the main bedroom. The retreat includes built-in window seats – the ideal place for reading a book or taking in views of the olive groves and walled lavender and rose gardens below.

Parents enjoy a dressing room and spacious en suite with corner spa and twin marble vanities. The views from the main bedroom are gorgeous and are best enjoyed from the private wraparound balcony that has stairs connecting it to the garden. Established rows of pines ensure complete privacy on this property’s manicured grounds.

There is plenty of parking here – for the Alpha Romeo, Ferrari and the Fiat – either in the double garage or out on the expansive paved forecourt.

This little slice of Tuscany is located near the Fitzsimons Road turn-off for easy access to Eltham and the city. \

This charming Hawthorn-brick residence is among the few original houses that remain in Rosanna’s coveted Golf Links Estate. It was built in 1971 by Merchant Builders, the developer who acquired the former golf

course in the 1960s.As a result, the property is not only right next to the

rambling Golf Links parklands, it is also surrounded by trees that date back to the golf course’s beginnings in the mid-19th century. Only kookaburras and lorikeets interrupt the serenity here.

Designed to complement rather than compete with the surrounding landscape, the property is bound by recycled brick courtyards and landscaped gardens and is lined with large, timber-framed windows that invite the views inside.

There are two light-filled living spaces and four bedrooms, one of which doubles as a study. The kitchen and meals hub was extended in 2005 by the owners. They also renovated both bathrooms, including the en suite off the main bedroom.

Although modest in size, the house is comfortable and spacious. It is also energy efficient and includes solar panels and water tanks.

A short stroll through the parkland takes you to Rosanna village and train station. \ LIAM CARTER

You cannot see 14 View Road from the street. Follow the paved driveway through the trees into what is surely one of Lower Plenty’s most private addresses. This 4676-square metre block is guarded by a

dense border of trees. The property has a 12-metre pool, pony paddock and an entertainment terrace. And all this is just a few moments from Lower Plenty shops, primary school and main roads to the city. The house, obviously a 1960s design, complements the surrounding landscape. Its timber-framed windows allow views of the rock gardens and trees. The current owners have painted the split-level house a creamy white and renovated the bathrooms and kitchen, which now has granite benches and European appliances. They retained many of the original features that give this property its unmistakeable retro charm, such as the built-in timber shelves and cabinets in the lounge and the desk in the study. \ LIAM CARTER

You can see why vendors choose to sell in spring. The garden here is in full bloom, and the weather is just warm enough to entice you to take a dip in the gorgeous solar-heated pool, which sits deep within the

gardens of this 1537-square metre block. The only people able to see in are mum and dad relaxing with a cup of tea on the deep back verandah. Outdoor living is as stylish and comfortable as that found indoors. The house has had a recent renovation, with stunning results. It has a stylish, family-sized kitchen with extensive stone bench space, stainless steel appliances, plenty of storage and full-height glass splashbacks. The open-plan living and meals hub is where the family comes together. But there is plenty of room for privacy either in the front two living rooms or below in the rumpus/fifth bedroom. This has plenty of space with a renovated en suite and private entrance. The main bedroom also has an en suite. \ LIAM CARTER

Down the road at the Austin Hospital, the buildings seem to grow and become more modern by the day. But at 119 Studley Road, no one is in a rush to pass in the old for the new. It’s the age-old architecture and

classic interiors that set this property apart.Built in 1923, the residence is steeped in the charms

of yesteryear. Its shingle-clad gables dress up a sturdy double-brick frame that keeps the house nice and cool in summer.

Beyond the front porch and entrance foyer, the lounge is a fine example of the enduring beauty of classic design. It has decorative ceilings, fireplace, rich timber floors and a timber-panelled box window, currently home to a grand piano.

Nearby, a sunroom is the ideal hideaway for burying your head in a good book.

Double doors connect the lounge with an equally elegant dining room, with a corner fireplace and a tiled hearth.

The kitchen has been modernised with CaesarStone benches and stainless steel appliances, but even the north-facing family hub has an old-world character. More decorative ceilings complement the parquetry floors and wood fire heater.

The main bedroom may not have an en suite but it has high ceilings and enough space for a sitting area.

Three more bedrooms are upstairs. They share a renovated bathroom and have charming vaulted ceilings and windows lined with plantation shutters. \ LIAM CARTER

For more than 30 years, the third owners of this 1950s solid-brick house have relished the convenience that Mountain View Parade has offered. The kitchen and shower room were renovated six years ago. The lounge,

with a gas fireplace, provides the ultimate place to relax after a long day. A dining room nearby connects to the revamped kitchen. If you’re up for a game of billiards, head through to the family room or, in summer, head outside and continue entertaining under a covered area. The large main bedroom is upstairs and has views of the Dandenongs. Three more bedrooms are upstairs, all with treetop views. One has been transformed into a study. All the bedrooms share a separate toilet and bathroom with cast-iron bathtub. The fourth bedroom is downstairs. \ BIANCA VILLAROsA
