i t might not be all over for Arnie. OK, Maria Shriver won’t be taking his calls for a while (those communications will now be conducted via a highly

paid divorce lawyer) but some Republican figures, political strategists and former advisers are cool and unblinking in their assessment of the future political fortunes of former Californian “Governator”, Arnold Schwarzenegger: he’s not necessarily finished yet.

If the revelation of a love child had been made mid-term or mid-campaign, then perhaps the blow would have been as fatal to his ambitions as it appears to have been to his marriage. But now, in hiatus, few commentators see this scandal as much more than a blip in Schwarzenegger’s considered campaign to establish himself as the kind of statesman on climate change that Tony Blair has become on the Middle East – and perhaps maybe even something more powerful than that in the distant future. If the man makes sense on carbon-neutral energy production, water conservation and carbon dioxide reductions, will you care that he lied to his wife?

Some might. I reckon most of you won’t. Bill Clinton has long been described as the only man who could get elected tomorrow as the President of the World, such is his formidable intellect, charisma and abilities. His formidable fornication record doesn’t seem to matter so much any more; that’s just the stuff of dusty, old

late-show jokes and stand-up routines. Even some of the comedians have moved on and committed well-publicised adulteries of their own.

What remains is something beyond our ken and I’d argue genuinely beyond our care: why do some men lie, and why can’t some men keep it in their pants? I’m sure I’m not imagining this when I hear, right now, the eternal wail of countless women begging me not to waste space on digging through this one again. Why do they? Because they can. And we’re done.

Not all of them, but enough for us to know that there will always be women silly enough, or disloyal enough, to entertain these blokes, and that these guys will lie when caught. We will then make our own private judgment on whether they are worth continuing with as life partners. But what of the public assessment of someone who you don’t ask to rear your children or tend to your emotional needs, but to run your state and write

the legislation that brings peace and prosperity: do you care if they’re philanderers?

I’m prepared to accept that we’ve simply been exhausted by the repetitive nature of the history of male infidelity and that some – me – just can’t be bothered being outraged any more. Also, I wouldn’t dare to presume that any person in public life is any more or less perfect than the people I know personally, so lofty expectations are misplaced. This almost certainly means that cynicism has now replaced my usual scepticism, and that’s a deeply disheartening thought.

That, as the Bible will tell you, is the trouble with knowing. If so much of this remained unreported, as it was in the good old days of JFK’s unpublished debauches, then we could kid ourselves that our political leaders were better than us, better than they certainly were. (If it went unpublished, then Maria could probably muddle through a reconstructed relationship with a soundly chastened Arnie in private, but that’s a different subject for another time.) The issue for us is just how deeply we’re fooling ourselves about the people we elect to high office, when statistically speaking at the very least, some of them have to be fooling somebody else some of the time.\

LTony Mott has spent 30 years photographing some of the biggest and wildest names in music – from Paul McCartney to Madonna, from Silverchair to the Rolling Stones. He tells SARAH MARINOS the stories behind his favourite images of some Australian icons.

DI V IN Y L S \ CRONULLA, 1987

“ e rst photo I ever sold was of Chrissy Amphlett. It was taken at the Piccadilly Hotel in Kings Cross in 1983. I was a chef and photography was my passion – it was never going to be a career. But I got lucky because the Divinyls had a residency every Monday night and I saw Chrissy by chance. I was curious about how di cult it would be to capture images of this amazingly wild performance, and that was the start of me becoming a rock’n’roll photographer.

“For the rst six months I was pretty crap but gradually I achieved some sort of ability and it was a huge thrill when the Divinyls bought my rst photo and used it as a tour poster. I learnt the art of photography through Chrissy.

“I’ve gone on to photograph just about every female artist in the world, and nobody touches her. She is easily the best performer I’ve ever come across. She was unpredictable, a wild, wild banshee, the most mesmerising performer and yet very professional. is photo is taken at an outdoor concert at the Cronulla Showgrounds and epitomises a live shot of Chrissy – legs astride on the drum riser and screaming like a banshee.”

AC / DC \ SYDNEY, 1987 AND MELBOURNE, 2010

‘ is image was taken at Etihad Stadium more than 20 years a er I rst photographed AC/DC. ey are still the perfect rock’n’roll band.

“I think the only real di erence is the light show and props just get bigger. at’s a full-on railway locomotive in the second photo! I remember being at Etihad Stadium and this 54-year-old guy duck-walked on to the stage with a guitar, wearing a school uniform, and the crowd just loved him.

“But the AC/DC audience has changed. eir audience at the 1987 gig was a pretty intimidating crowd. But 20-odd years later there were families with kids in the audience. ey were a heavy-metal hard-rock band and now they’re acceptable mainstream.

“It’s a breeze to work with AC/DC but they have a complete non-interest in celebrity. You do a photo session and they turn up, you shoot and they walk away. ey don’t play the media game or court the spotlight. I’ve bumped into Angus Young at Balmain Market on a Saturday a ernoon and nobody knows who he is – yet he’s the biggest rock’n’roll star Australia has.”

“I set up a studio backstage at the Big Day Out at the Melbourne Showgrounds. At the time I knew Nick Cave’s new album was an album of duets, and someone told me he’d done a duet with Kylie and I thought ‘That’s never going to happen’. They were definitely the odd couple.

“I had my camera gear stolen in Sydney the week before this shoot. I had a spare camera but had to borrow a lens. Nick’s manager found out and said ‘Nick and Kylie will do a photo with you in Melbourne and you can sell the photo to get some money to replace your camera equipment’. It was very good of them.

“They turned up and Kylie did all the posing. She was obviously enamoured of Nick Cave, got down on her knees and prayed at the feet of Nick. Kylie is always very pleasant. Nick is just Nick Cave. Photo sessions for him are a necessary evil, whereas Kylie works the camera.”

t he l i v ing end \ melbourne, 2009

“I spent the Big Day Out in 2009 touring with the Living End and this is my favourite photo. I love Chris turning around, the bass, the crowd in the background … I sat behind Chris’ amp waiting for that one moment. I was trying to reproduce Johnny Cash’s infamous photo of him sticking one finger up at the camera. Chris was aware of that, but every time he did it he had a bloody big smile on his face! Later he said he just couldn’t be aggressive.

“Chris is a nice guy and an amazing guitarist. On a previous Big Day Out tour he was beside himself because Joe Strummer was on the bill – one of his boyhood heroes. He had a bad car accident on the Great Ocean Road in 2001 and was lucky to come out alive. At the time I took this photo their latest album was a success, too, and so by the time they got to Melbourne, their home town, this was a celebration.”

po w derfinger \ Sydney, 1991 and auckland, 2010

“The first photo (left) is taken at Sydney University. It was Powderfinger’s first visit to Sydney. They didn’t have a record deal, they were young and naïve but there was a vibe around them. They were playing in a little pub called Max’s in Petersham and I had no idea who they were. I never saw their potential but I’ve never been a great judge of talent. I shared a house with a girl called Kate Stewart, who told me she’d discovered the greatest band ever and was going to manage them. I saw them and was completely unimpressed and that was You Am I!

“Almost 20 years on from first meeting Powderfinger, I took a happy snap at the Big Day Out in Auckland just before they went on stage. Apart from the hairstyles there’s not a lot of difference. There aren’t many bands that have a 20-year career without a single line-up change. And they’ve aged well. All of them are really good at sport. I’ve been thrashed at tennis by the Powderfinger boys.” \

“Natalie’s manager invited me to take stills while she shot a video in a warehouse on Sydney’s North Shore. She had about eight costume changes in one day, and at one point she had to wear the tightest corset, swing on a swing and sing at the same time. I think she found that quite difficult but was a real trouper. I never heard her complain once, and she was on a flight later that day to perform at a function. Still no complaints. She’s a lovely girl.

“I got a bit of flak for putting her image in the book because she’s not a rock’n’roll star, but Natalie epitomises the modern era. Is she a television presenter? A musician? An actress? She’s everything.

I believe if she concentrated on her music career she could be a huge star, but in the modern era performers now multitask.

Natalie’s an incredible chameleon with her look, too – and she has a great face.” \

The waiTeR greets us at the top of the stairs by asking if we have

vouchers. We don’t have vouchers. Do many of your customers arrive with vouchers? Oh, about 90 per cent he says. And what’s so good about them? Well, you spend $50 and get $170 worth of food and drinks. How I wish we’d had a voucher.

Metropolis Eating House is not a restaurant but a “reception space” (so says its website) on the first floor of an old nightclub that was apparently big in the 1980s. Almost three decades later the building has an unpleasant musty smell on entering and the nine diners here on Saturday night struggle to breathe life into the vast upstairs ballroom. Tables are sparsely arrayed around a gleaming parquetry dance floor and framed by a scarlet feature wall printed with tufted birds of paradise. If it wasn’t so gigantesque the room could be handsome with its lofty ceilings, gallery of mirrors and stained-glass windows screening out Sydney Road. There’s ample to like about the fit-out, but in this space it is functional rather than fetching.

A guitar duo plays pleasant melodies a little too loudly for easy conversation. During breaks we listen to a Paris Combo recording that underscores Metropolis’s Gallic leanings. Chef Gabriel Martin is French, as are two of his (good-looking) floor staff who speak English weez a sexy continental drawl. France is there too in the concise but fascinating wine list. Whoever assembled this line-up has wonderfully eclectic tastes that range from a tantalising Tiefenbrunner to a solid Tempranillo Crianza from Rioja.

A tight collection of cognacs, armagnacs and eaux de vie round out the cellar. This must be one of Melbourne’s most affordable lists; the Tiefenbrunner is only $43 – I’ve seen it nudge $70 elsewhere – and there

are plenty of smart choices in the $30 range. Before coming here Martin cooked at Maisonette in

Essendon. The Good Food Guide awarded him a chef’s hat two years running and ex-premier John Brumby was reportedly a regular diner. I never ate there so can’t vouch for past triumphs, but I doubt he’ll repeat the success here.

The Metropolis menu is divided into Tidbits, from which we snack on chargrilled calamari coated in a green sauce of coriander, cumin and garlic. It tastes all right and the calamari is incredibly tender, but then it is also undercooked.

From the First Approach (entrees, presumably) we order the chilled skate with artichoke paste, slow-cooked red pepper, a salad of tiny squid legs and parsley jus. It looks like it’s trying to be haute cuisine but fails on one important measure – it’s unappetising.

Martin’s roast duck is much more successful; this man knows how to cook bird. The elegantly sliced breast

Turmeric-scented king salmon with a skin transplant of nori is fine but comes on a bizarre black cardamom jus.

There’s a trainee waiter on tonight. She is quite clueless but her colleagues don’t seem to give her any guidance. At one point she asks us if we’d like dessert. We tell her we’d rather have our main courses first, please. Another time she tops up my wine then, realising there’s only a dribble left for my dinner date, disappears for 15 minutes – with the bottle – to ponder the dilemma. She eventually returns and sloshes the dregs into his glass, in silence. It’s like a surreal mime.

The piece de resistance of the evening, and not in a good way, is the dessert platter. I will never forget it.

black-topped tile. Each is astonishing. On the left is an abstract work of what looks like vein-coloured worm castings bombed by bits of fallen ceiling. (The menu identifies these as white chocolate Aero chunks, which sound much nicer than they taste.) If the mind boggles at the imagery, you should try eating this big, fat mouthful of WTF. In the centre of the tile is a whorl of chocolate tapioca studded with golden honeycomb. Honeycomb! We both love the stuff, but not when it’s burnt. And the tapioca? Indescribable.

The last dessert is equally awful, so the kitchen at least gets marks for consistency. It comprises three transparent ravioli filled with an enjoyable blood-orange mulch. The ravioli are see-through because the “pasta” casing consists of what looks and tastes like pure gelatin. Slicing into one is like dissecting an ovum.

I can’t imagine going back. Not even with a voucher. \[email protected]

WhatJohn

did next

Re v ie w \ in t eRv ie w

John elliott is as passionate as ever about business, sport, media and the importance of not looking back. as Big Jack gears up for his first stage role, he talked to PeteR WiLMoth.

He’s the lion in winter. At 69 the roar isn’t what it was. Nor the bluster nor the reputation for boorishness, pig’s arse and all that. It’s not about Jack any more, not about being a Master of the Universe, not about a ridiculously packed diary.

It’s more about his kids and grandkids, and he seems OK with that.

He doesn’t have the money, power, influence or football club that he once did. But what John Elliott does have is a sense of perspective, a disinclination to look back with regret and a healthy philosophical approach to waking up every day and cracking into life. And that’s probably worth more than the $80 million paper money he once had.

We’re in his city office amid an array of elephants (he’s got 600), a Rubbery Figures model of him in the corner and various photographic reminders of his time at the top of business and football (including one of Elliott, Dick Pratt and Wes Lofts singing the Carlton club song after a victory).

A few days earlier he gave a eulogy at his mother’s funeral. “Doing eulogies is exceedingly tough, particularly for parents,” he says. “My father died six years ago — he was 91. Mum died at 93. I said on Friday, she never sought the limelight but she was always there. She did a lot of charity work. Big crowd at St Paul’s; overflowing with people.”

In the same week Elliott’s son, Tom, announced his engagement. “About time,” he says. “I get on well with all my children. I’m a grandfather four times and fifth one on the way.”

What sort of grandfather is he? Engaged? Involved? “Not greatly. I don’t think any of my children would trust me to babysit.” Why? “I wouldn’t be good enough. You learn certain things that you want to be good at and things that you don’t.”

You know your limitations. “I get on very well with my grandchildren. The oldest one’s about five. Two boys and two girls.”

Elliott hasn’t been overly burdened by this new trend 10 The weekly review \ may 25, 2011

Page 11: HDV-Heidelberg-20110525-Edition53

towards grandparents looking after their grandchildren substantially while their parents work. “I’d be no good at all. I still go to work. (A friend) once said to me, ‘People like you and me, John, we never retire’. I don’t play golf because I’ve got a bad back from playing footy, I can’t pivot. I’d much rather come to the office and work than wander aimlessly around a golf course.”

I suggest there’s no point in retirement if you’re still hail and hearty. “That’s right. I’ve been my own boss since I was 31 so I’m used to motivating myself. But there are a lot of people who do as they’re told all their lives and they don’t have the amount of travel I’ve had … I’ve lived in New York, Chicago, London, south of France, travelled most cities in the world.

“I’ve never done the tourist thing much. But a lot of people don’t get to see the world until they retire and they’re forced to retire at a certain age, and as a result they want to (travel the world), which is a good thing. My father did that, being a banker. He didn’t see any of the world until after he retired.” Bit late in life? “I think that’s right. I couldn’t agree with you more.”

The crazy schedule might be over, but Elliott’s diary is filling up. He is planning to launch a football program on Channel 31. On June 1, he’s appearing, alongside Ita Buttrose and Steve Bracks, in a version of David Williamson’s play Emerald City at the Malthouse Theatre. He’s playing a “cranky old producer”. And he’s halfway through writing a book on politics.

With Tom, he runs a website called The John Elliott Report where he raps on politics, business and sport. Recent topics include the death of Osama bin Laden, the royal wedding, the record AFL television viewing rights and “Carlton’s Chris Judd’s outstanding game last Friday night”.

“We get 700 hits a day,” Elliott says. “I don’t think you ever make much money out of them … It gives me a good opportunity to voice my opinion on public affairs, which I am still very interested in, and have a bit of fun.

“If I go on Q&A, which I’ve done several times, I always give it a plug, and we find the next day there’s thousands of people making comments about Q&A.”

E lliott’s last appearance was with former Age columnist Catherine Deveny, with whom Elliott shared a cigarette backstage. “Some of her views are very odd, I think. I had to sit next to the

Greens leader last time (Bob Brown). I don’t know where he gets a lot of his ideas from. All over the place.”

Neither the website nor the TV show will make him rich again, so he has to work. “I do a bit of commodity trading, things like iron ore out of Brazil, coal out of Indonesia into China and Asia. I get retained by a couple of financial groups to advise them how to run their business. I help people raise money through my private connections. It’s a varied sort of thing.

“When you’re running a big business you’re busy all the time. I go back and look at my diaries and I don’t know how I fitted everything in. I was federal president of the Liberal Party, chairman and chief executive of Elders, president of the Carlton Football Club. Now, I’m waiting for other people to make decisions, so I get a lot more spare time, which annoys me a bit.

“I’ll make about 10 calls after you go, then I’m waiting. Some of them mightn’t come back for a couple of days. I’ve got time to do good lunches. Maybe go and have a holiday on occasion. The best part of the world is the south of France. I had a house there for 10 years. And the Italian coast. We do that when we can.”

Is this life better for him physically? “Health-wise I’m good. I go to the physio once a month. My partner gives me all these vitamins to take, I get a check-up once a year. ‘You’re in perfect health’, the doctor told me a month ago, I said, ‘Well, I’m wasting my money coming here, aren’t I’?” What about the ciggies? “The condition of me going to him was that he wasn’t going to advise me on those sorts of things.”

If he has a regret, it would be never going into politics.

Cost me a lot of money too. About $10 million.”He was once worth about $80 million but lost most

of that. “Most of it was tied up in Elders shares. I never worked for money. Money is incidental. What you need is enough to live comfortably. I could do with a bit more at the moment. Could come any day. I really work because I want to drive and succeed.”

Was he offended at being portrayed as boorish? “No, I never worried about it. I didn’t like it, but there was nothing I could do about it. It was a bit like water off a duck’s back.”

H e still loves the Carlton Football Club. “Hopefully we’ll make the top four this year. I still go to most of the games. I’ve barracked for Carlton since I was seven years of age, over

60 years. I was made a member since I was eight.”Is he still welcomed at the club? “Oh yes. Stephen

Kernahan, president, is a friend of mine. I have a lot of good friends there. I did 20 years there, which is the second-longest serving president of any club in the history of the AFL.”

Looking back, was 20 years too long? “Well, the biggest problem you’ve got, you’ve got to find someone to replace you. It’s one of the hardest jobs to find the right people for, because at a football club you’ve got to be able to speak well, you’ve got to be able to mix with, I suppose, the great unwashed public, and also deal with the Dick Pratts and Sam Smorgons of this life and you’ve got to have enough money that you are putting into the club because you can’t ask other people for money if you’re not putting in.”

His passion is collecting. “I’ve always been a collector; 17th-century oak furniture. All the (John) Gould birds. Parrots, cockatoos in Australia. I had a wonderful collection. Had to sell a lot when I separated from my wife, had to split it all up. And elephants. I’ve got 400 elephant ties and about 600 elephants.” Ever tempted to go on Collectors on the ABC? “No. I’ve been asked.”

He agrees that relationships are what’s important in life. “I have a fantastic number of friends dating back to my school days at Carey, Melbourne University … a lot of friends in business from Henry Jones right through. The most important thing is for the people who know you — it’s all very well for the press, who don’t know you at all, they form an opinion based on nothing much of the time, based on what they think you must be like … You can get up every morning and say, ‘Well, I always tell the truth and I’ve got a high level of integrity’. That’s very important.”

What wisdom is he passing on to his grandchildren? “Well, they all barrack for Carlton. The only three things my children (had to do) was vote Liberal, barrack for Carlton and always do your best. I said, ‘I’m not going to criticise you for anything you do in life; it’s up to you what you do, but you get more enjoyment out of achieving yourself than you will relying on your father’. I’ve told them I’m not going to leave them any money.”

How did they take that? “Well, they accepted it. My son said, ‘What are you going to do with it, dad?’ I said, ‘I’ll give it to the Anti-Cancer Council and the Heart Foundation’.”

It’s time to leave Big Jack to his day. He seems happy to step out of the spotlight. “Now Tom’s become a fairly public person … They used to say, ‘You’re the son of John Elliott’, now it’s ‘You’re the father of Tom Elliott’?” \

“I would have liked to have gone in, but in my life I’ve never looked back, always forward. I couldn’t find a seat, because the then member for Higgins wouldn’t stand aside. I had the numbers then to lead the party, I know that, but if you don’t have a seat …

“And I was running Elders, which had over 20,000 employees. You couldn’t just sit round and wait for another opportunity. I had to make up my mind. I told the board. They gave me six months to see if I could get a seat. Wasn’t able to, so I said, ‘Forget about it, I’ll go back and run Elders’, which I did.”

He has lived in Carlton for 10 years. “Wonderful part of the world. Very cosmopolitan, Carlton. I’ve got a penthouse on the fourth floor, which overlooks Carlton Gardens and the city. Very pleasant.”

Does he walk into work? “I think I’ve walked in once. I do go for a walk — through the Botanic Gardens. I’m not one of those lunatics that runs round the Tan. It’s good to get exercise, but it’s so much better walking through the gardens.”

His partner of 10 years is Joanne Hurley, a flight attendant with Qantas. “She’s been flying 20 years. It’s an interesting relationship because she’s away three

or four days a week. She goes to LA most of the time. We have a wonderful life together. She’s an exceptional person. I’ve never had an argument with her.” How does he achieve that? “I’m rational. I prefer to be rational rather than emotional. As long as people are logical, I never have arguments with anybody. Her politics and mine are pretty much the same; she’s conservative. She’s a star. My mother was very fond of her.”

When Elliott travels, do people recognise him? “Oh yes. I’m still well known in London and New York. The Australians come up, ‘What are you doing here, John’?” I did stay with one of the dukes 10 years ago and he had a huge home (in northern England), which was open to the public and we were staying with him for the weekend.

“I said, ‘I want to go and see what all the public are seeing’. He said, ‘I just don’t want to embarrass you, but when we walk through, a lot of people will say hello to me. I said, ‘Oh I expect that’. So we walk in there and there are 30 Australians going through and they all came over, recognised me, didn’t recognise him at all.”

He doesn’t look back much — onwards and upwards is better. “I’ve had a very fortunate and pretty successful life. The only mistake I really made was being pushed by several of my directors to make a bid for Elders, which in hindsight we shouldn’t have done. When we were cleaning out things in my parents’ home — the garage, of all things (I was supervising) — I came over 30 BRWs and all those magazines from the late ’70s to early ’90s. It was quite funny to see the pictures; you see yourself, your mates … I don’t read it all. But it was interesting.”

How did he think he was seen in those days? “Towards the late ’80s I was seen as the salvation of the Liberal Party. My public image was always good until I got charged by the NCA (National Crime Authority). It was a real mistake, which I didn’t recognise at the time, that it’s very difficult to be running a very large company and also be federal president of a political party because they get into you. I got charged … it was all about politics.”

Elliott took them on. “And we won. That doesn’t mean some mud doesn’t stick. Always does.” A painful chapter. “Yeah it was tough. IJ

DECANTER\ BEN THOMAS’ LIFE IS A CABERNET, OLD CHUM

I WON’T BE the rst person to talk about the weather, but with winter coming

early this year it seems that’s all we’ve been talking about lately. Most of us have well and truly ditched warm-weather fare and lighter wines and headed into slow-cooked food and rich wine territory.

For me, winter means secondary cuts of meat cooked slowly, and comforting wines to match.

In our house we have a philosophy: “Why bother turning the heater on when the oven can warm the house and our stomachs.”

From braises to stews and belly to shank, the food of the season should match what we drink. A glass of sav blanc just won’t cut it with the rich avours – it’s time to change the house wine from white to red.

I’ve tried a lot of great-value cabernet sauvignon in recent

(SU

)

MATTHEW BROOKE

Australia’s cabernet regions

There’s so much generosity in cabernet’s avours and tannins that this makes it an easy wine to identify. But as Matthew Brooke points out, different regions produce a wide range of cabernet styles.

“There’s a few classic Australian regions,” he says. “Margaret River has red-fruited lifted aromas. Coonawarra has bigger, drying avours with eucalypt, and the Yarra Valley is doing excellent lighter, softer wines with herbal and bell pepper notes through to tomato bush aromas. McLaren Vale is the opposite end of the cabernet spectrum with rich, dark-fruited, high-alcohol styles.”

weeks and it has been getting a good run with dinner at our place. I’m not alone in enjoying a glass of cab sav when the temperature plummets.

Cabernet is a good go-to wine for many people – there’s so much generosity with cabernet and it is easy to identify with the bold, generous avours of cabernet. It’s a wine that matches well with many foods.

Matthew Brooke, head sommelier at Circa, e Prince, pours quite a bit of cabernet at the restaurant. He’s also full of advice when it comes to matching cab sav and food.

“ ings to consider with food and wine matching is that the higher alcohol levels and bigger tannins in cabernet can squash a lot of food avours,” says Brooke.

“Cabernet is great with simply grilled steak or bitter vegetables such as eggplant, endive or radicchio to complement meats.

“Older cabernet goes well with rarer meats but younger wines go great with slow-roasted meats and secondary cuts, stews, slow braises such as osso bucco and ragu.

“And don’t be shy with butter and oil with pasta – it’s a good foil for the tannins. It can also handle a lot of black pepper.”

Some of the best-value wines I’ve tried lately have been cabernets that have been produced in a fruit-forward style that o ers immediate drinking pleasure rather than requiring time in the cellar for the avours to integrate. ey’re generally less than $20 a bottle – and in quite a few cases closer to $10.

Keep an eye out for some of the entry-level wines from big cabernet producers such as Rymill, Katnook Estate and Wynns. Although, if you let the oven heat your house and save on your heating bill, you might be able to splash out on the next price range. \

So

you love a bargain?

Rymill The Yearling Cabernet Sauvignon 2009(Coonawarra) $15; 13.5% ★★★ ½

A fruit-forward style of cabernet, this sees little oak and is made for immediate drinking. It smells of blackcurrant, blackberry and mint with some dusty notes and has juicy, medium-bodied flavours including cassis, chocolate and mint. Drying, chalky tannins softened with a couple of hours in the decanter, and its clean acid would be good with fatty foods. It finishes with persistent blackcurrant flavours. It’s good value at full recommended retail price, but you might pick it up cheaper at the chains.

Food match \ Lamb chops

D’Arenberg The Stump Jump Cabernet Sauvignon 2009(McLaren Vale) $11.95; 14% ★★★ ½

I’m not sure there’s a better range of $12 wines in Australia at the moment — these Stump Jumps are serious wines. Rich and ripe aromas of redcurrant, blackcurrant, blueberry, mint and a hint of chocolate. Medium-bodied flavours of cassis and blackberry lead to some seriously fine and grippy tannins and juicy acid. The structure on show here is rarely seen at this price point and there’s a satisfying finish of red fruits and spice.

Food match \ Rabbit ragu

Cono Sur Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere 2009(Colchagua Valley, Chile) $13.99; 14% ★★★★

OK, so this isn’t a straight cabernet — it’s blended with carménère, a Bordeaux grape that’s rare in France now but prolific in Chile, where it has thrived. A rustic bouquet of redcurrant, mulberry, blackberry and fennel and dusty oak sees similar ripe flavours replicated on the palate. Fresh acid, chewy tannins and good balance make this a good option with or without food and the nice blackcurrant and dried-herb finish is a bit of a bonus.

Food match \ Stracotto

Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon 2009(Adelaide Hills) $19; 14% ★★★★

This is currently being poured by the glass at Circa, The Prince and it’s the kind of wine you’d like to have a glass or two of at a restaurant. It doesn’t see a lot of oak, but it’s approachable, full of flavour and well structured. It is filled with intense flavours and aromas of redcurrant, mulberry, blackberry, spice, vanillin oak and leaves. Juicy acid, chewy tannins that slightly dry the mouth and a pleasant finish of dark fruits and spice make this a rather appealing wine.

Food match \ Beef-and-ale stew

Mike Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 (Adelaide Hills) $13; 14% ★★★★

I’ve been buying Mike Press wines for a couple of years. They are some of the best-value wines in the country but are sold mostly via their website (mikepresswines.com.au) and at small independents such as Cloudwine in South Melbourne. The wines often sell out quickly, so get on their mailing list to avoid disappointment. Bright, elegant aromas and flavours of redcurrants, mulberry, dusty oak, cherry, vanilla and chocolate are supported by grippy tannins, bright acid and a nice chocolatey finish. Food match \ Aglio e olio

WE LOVE IT\ P16

I n the hierarchy of Eaglemont streets, you don’t get much better than Outlook Drive. It is what people expect from this

leafy suburb laid out in the early 20th century by the great American

architect Walter Burley Gri n: a sweeping, curved street with substantial houses, many from the 1930s, with classic art deco features. And, of course, a view beyond the parklands to the distant hills.

en at a bend in the street among all the period houses is No.2. It stands apart from the pack for its modernist in uences, at roof and extensive use of timber and stone.

But it still conforms to the Eaglemont norm of a family house that shows great respect for the environment with a terri c blend between the indoors and outdoors.

e full-height windows and sliding glass doors of the living room open to a wide timber deck that merges beautifully with the garden. ere are no hard edges, just low curved stone borders enclosing sweeping garden beds with a backdrop of established trees. Eating on the deck is like being surrounded by your own private botanical garden. Gri n would surely have approved.

e house, with dual entry from Outlook Drive and Maltravers Road, is 11 years old. It is well sited on its irregular-shaped, 1230-square metre block so that by the time you arrive at the front door there is a sense of being “on top of the world”. e elevation gives a view past the treetops to the Yarra Valley parklands to the east. It was also designed to maximise light and privacy and with large spaces for the contemporary family.

At the dramatic entry, the verandah leads to a full-height front door anked by glass panels. A stone feature panel – all hand-built – adds interest to the façade without distracting from the view.

ere is a study, with built-in cabinets and shelves, overlooking the front verandah, but the formal lounge and dining room do not exist here. But that is no disadvantage when you step into the dining/living room and kitchen. is is the knock-out room and very much the heart of this big, bold house.

It comes as no surprise to learn that the extended family gathers here most Sundays to share lunch at a vast table that seats 16.

e kitchen, which includes a large, stone-topped island bench, features a full complement of Miele appliances and magni cent American cherrywood joinery. is is a theme carried throughout the house, with fantastic cherrywood panels and joinery in the entrance hall. Touching it feels like touching silk. e rest of this dramatic family living hub includes a large scullery at one end of the kitchen while the living area at the other end has a Jetmaster replace surrounded

by marble against one wall. e far wall is made up of sliding doors that open to the deck and help bring the garden “inside”. Windows also extend to the two side walls to give the impression of wrapping the living/dining area in glass.

At the front of the house, o the transverse hall, two bedrooms have sliding doors to a private courtyard where a classic stone wall contrasts with the timber and glass nishes alongside it. ere is a bathroom with a luxurious dressing room tted with wardrobes on two walls.

High ceilings throughout are matched by full-height doors that increase the feel of spaciousness.

In a large house such as this, you expect big features, and No.2 Outlook Drive does not disappoint. e staircase, with its solid-timber stairs, is a striking piece of design at the end of the living room. It draws the eye up to the landing before continuing to the rst oor.

Upstairs, two more large bedrooms share a bathroom to complete the picture at this modern classic in one of Melbourne’s most tightly held suburbs. \

Not much in Montmorency dates back to the good old days. But then there’s that pretty, white weatherboard on Airlie Road. Word has it this restored beauty is one of area’s original farm houses.

Thanks to a kind owner who resisted calls “to knock the place down”, this rare gem has kept many of its original pre-war features. The façade is dressed up in shingles and double-hung multipane windows. Inside, Baltic pine lines the hall and there is detailed fretwork overhead.

The front three bedrooms, each painted a different colour, have brick replaces and picture rails. They share a family bathroom completed in the owner’s rst round of renovations. Two more were to follow over a 10-year period. The nal product is a rambling two-storey residence with ve bedrooms and a large and light- lled family hub.

The original footprint nishes in the meals area, but great care has been taken to ensure a consistent style front and back. Dado walls, an orange stain to the boards and a palette of soft blue, cream and white create a fresh but rustic aesthetic akin to a Daylesford spa-retreat. Diamond leadlight windows in the kitchen and french doors off the family room add to the mood.

Guests can take residence in the lower-level bedroom by the second bathroom. It opens to a deck overlooking the lawn.

Upstairs, the fth bedroom with adjoining study is ideal for teenagers. \ LIAM CARTER

Like many of its neighbours, this house has an irresistible warmth, but its look and style are totally its own. Minus the mud bricks, the two-storey façade with its recycled red-brick trim looks almost like a French country

house. Built by Gary Dyson 20 years ago, the house, under its second and current owners, has been made over with the highest-quality materials. For example, the en suite’s travertine walls are broken up with panels of red gum and the vanity comprises Balinese marble bowls with tapware that rst appeared in an exhibition in a New York gallery. Beyond the front living room is the open-plan family hub, where the bluestone hearth and island bench contrast with the red-gum cabinets. A section of glassed oor exposes the artist’s studio below. This can be accessed from the deck by the bespoke wrought-iron spiral staircase. There is also a double garage, while three children’s bedrooms and another bathroom are up top. \ LIAM CARTER

When the drawcard for the suburb is out the back gate, you know you’re on to a winner. This ve-bedroom family residence, at the head of Lees Court, backs on to Creekbend Reserve. Not only does this provide access

to the walking tracks that trace the creek to Banyule Flats but it also allows for beautiful park views from every east-facing window. In the reserve, it would be easy to forget that village shopping and top schools, such as Viewbank College and Banyule Primary, are within walking distance. The original brick-veneer house was extended 15 years ago and now has a top level, which, from the street, is mock-Tudor with twin gables. The top oor has four bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and a family bathroom. Downstairs, two bedrooms have been opened into a large rumpus. Two more bathrooms and the fth bedroom or study are nearby. This property includes a single carport, ducted heating, evaporated cooling and plenty of storage. \ LIAM CARTER

The appeal of modernist architecture has not been lost on the new generation of style-savvy home owners. For the young fashion designer, who passed in Brighton for this leafy 0.4-hectare patch of Eltham

South, this at-roofed 1973 house was at once a blank canvas and a work of art. She fell in love with the clean lines and free- owing oor plan that, although open, includes intimate areas for quiet contemplation and creation. The property’s ability to catch every ray of natural light through full-height windows was another reason she signed on the dotted line. The vast wall space and four semi-distinct living areas have allowed the vendor to dress

the house as if it were in a high-end design catalogue. The minimalist interiors are matched by a rear garden of rocks, native grasses and sloping manicured lawns that hint of Palm Springs. Out front, a long, vine-draped verandah overlooks a large swimming pool and sunbathing terrace that would put any Hollywood Hills hideaway to shame. But there is a lot of Eltham here, too. The ceilings are exposed timber and the recycled Hawthorn brick replace is a central feature of the lounge. Slate tiles line the wet-area oor and there are weathered brick pavers in the kitchen and meals area. As practical as it is stylish, this property includes plenty of storage, a double carport, pet enclosure, shedding and vegie patch. \ LIAM CARTER

Alexandra Street has been dubbed the “Dress circle of Greensborough” because many mayors, councillors and Brownlow medallists have called it home over the years. The ornate cornices, high ceilings

A s we pointed out recently, even in a buyers’ market it is still possible to buy badly. You can buy the wrong house

for your family, or you can commit the lesser but still signi cant sin of paying too much for a house.

Why is paying too much a sin? Because it not only lessens your capital growth going forward but also puts more of your disposable income towards your mortgage.

What if I promised you a free family holiday in Europe each year for the next 20 years or agreed to pay for your children’s school fees until they have le Carey or Firbank or Scotch? at’s what you’d be losing if you paid $3.2 million for a house that you could have bought at $2.9 million. Over the life of a 20-year loan you would need to pay back approximately $580,000, or $29,000 per year (a er tax), assuming an average 7.5 per cent interest rate. at’s an overseas holiday or the annual fees for two kids at private schools.

Paying too much upfront means your capital growth will be lower, too. Our investment division has the constant challenge of explaining to rst-time investors that the price tag of a house is not always the starting point for capital growth – the market value is.

Take the example of paying $2.1 million for a house that you could have negotiated down to $1.8 million in this buyers’ market.

If you sold the property in seven years’ time for, say, $3.6 million, your capital growth would be 100 per cent if you had paid $1.8 million, but only 72 per cent if you’d paid $2.1 million. Do that a couple of times and the smart buyer gets a free house; the not-so-smart buyer gets a big mortgage.

Want more evidence that this is a buyers’ market and should be able to negotiate a better price? Here are three big statistics that show the May 2011 million-dollar-plus market is a buyers’ market:

Clearance rates – these have dropped into the 40-50 per cent levels at auctions. at means that about half the houses currently for sale can’t nd anybody to agree with the seller on price.

Bidderman™* – this statistic is derived from the 30 auctions we attend each week. It’s a simple count of all the bidders, divided by the number of auctions, giving a measurement of underlying demand for what is on o er. With Bidderman currently around one, ie an average of just one bidder per auction, you can see that there ain’t a lot of le over bidders for the next house.

Lone ranger auctions – single-bidder auctions are currently the most common type of auction, at one in three auctions. is is why buyers need to be on rm foundations in terms of price.

What those three statistics tell us is that there is little group consensus on price right now, which makes it all too possible to

overpay. It also makes it all too possible to miss a bargain. Sellers sometimes get prices too low as well.

Even I can get it wrong, as this personal story shows: I sold one of my investment properties during the GFC. I’d bought an investment in Brighton, but it had put me out of my comfort zone and I decided to get rid of another investment house I’d owned for about 10 years at 13 Durrant Street, Brighton. It failed to sell at auction, I got the squeeze and despite everything I knew, because I was emotionally involved, I let it go in the $800,000s a couple of months later. If I’d sold a year either side of that, in 2007 and 2009, it would have gone for more than $1 million. Shows how much better it is to deal with others than your own.

e point is that this market is great to buy in if you have a long-term view, have found the right house and have a good plan, good strategies and good execution. But you can pay too much for a house in this market, and that doesn’t make sense. \

A poor decision can come back to haunt you

MAY PLANTINGS\ AUTUMN IS A GREAT TIME TO PLANT GREENS

AMONG the beautifully landscaped outdoor rooms and show gardens at the

Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, a corner of the gold medal-winning entry from Oasis Horticulture provided seasonal inspiration for inner-city vegie gardeners.

Oasis is the largest producer and distributor of bedding plants, including vegetables and herbs, in Australia. ey are the people behind the punnets of seedlings you pick up at the local garden centre or that nearby large hardware shop. is year their garden show entry, designed by Vivid Design and landscaped by Semken Landscaping, won a gold medal in the outdoor feature display category.

However, it wasn’t the white garden or the crowd-stopping oral plantings that caught the eye but a corner of the display with neat planter boxes lled with cool-season vegetables – Tuscan kale (cavolo nero), brussels sprouts, red mustard, snow peas, lettuce and a range of culinary herbs. Given a sunny spot, with at least ve hours sunshine a day, regular watering and soil enriched with organic compost, you too could re-create this superb harvest in a suburban backyard.

Autumn is the best time for planting greens to keep your kitchen supplied throughout winter. Try a combination of the following:

TUSCAN KALE Cavolo nero (Brassica oleracea acephala) is a leafy cabbage that doesn’t form heads but produces long, deep-green leaves with pronounced ribs that have a distinctive bubbly appearance. Cavolo nero can take eight to 10 weeks to mature. Protect seedlings from slugs and snails with pet-friendly snail bait. Harvest the sweetest leaves once night temperatures have dipped.

GREENS Unless you are a mad fan of brussels sprouts you would be better o buying them from the local greengrocer when the mood takes you. ey can be pest-prone and really need a cold snap to produce well. Cabbages can do well in the Melbourne winter – plant Diggers mini cabbage, which forms neat, crisp, green-golden heads in 130 days. However, you need to watch out for pests and be prepared to spray with Dipel, a non-toxic, natural caterpillar control that provides organic protection.

ASIAN GREENS If you want a quicker return for your e ort, Asian greens are de nitely the way to go. 4 Seasons Seeds (www.4seasonsseeds.com.au) has a Chinese vegetable collection with eight varieties including a packet of Oriental lettuce, bok choy white stem, baby bok choy,

hon tsai tai (purple choy sum), choy sum, bunching onion, Chinese broccoli and Oriental spinach. Hon tsai tai has been a revelation in Melbourne gardens: pencil-thin purple ower stalks are harvested with young leaves, ower buds and stems that are excellent for adding colour and taste to salads, a stir-fry and soups. e plants are very vigorous and cold-tolerant and produce throughout the winter as long as you harvest continuously. Sow from spring until autumn, or right through winter in mild climates. Feed heavily with nitrogen-rich fertilisers. Cut stems regularly to ensure continued crop production. Harvest in 30 to 50 days.

MUSTARD GREENS Foodies will love the versatility of colourful mustard. Mild- avoured young leaves make an excellent addition to salads and sandwiches as a garnish. e larger leaves have more bite, although cooking mellows them. Sow seed at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed and thin plants to 35cm to 60cm apart. Harvest in ve to eight weeks.

PEAS Garden, snow and sugar snap peas are three cool-seasontypes. Sugar snap peas, or mangetout (eat it all), are cultivated for their individual peas. Snow peas produce at snow-pea pods that are used whole in stir-fried

dishes. Garden, snap and snow peas can all be grown in our cooler months provided they have excellent soil enriched with organic compost.

LETTUCEIt’s time to sow lettuce and, if in the past you

have been wedded to popping in a couple of seedlings from the local nursery, now is the time

to throw your inhibitions to the winds and look at putting in a mesclun mix that will give you a wider variety of salad greens over the winter moths. Mesclun is best sown direct, with the seedlings thinned as they develop. e thinnings, tiny tender shoots and leaves, make an excellent early-season salad. Combine them with fresh herbs and a vinaigrette to create a salad of micro greens. e Italian Gardener sells a mixture of 14 di erent lettuce varieties, and Eden Seeds has a wide range of loose-leaf lettuce varieties that you can harvest as needed.

ROCKET is salad green is easy to grow and thrives in the cooler weather. Home grown, its avour is much stronger than anything you can buy from your local greengrocer. Harvest as needed.

Also plant: Radish, broad beans, garlic, carrots, beets, parsnips, and turnips. \
