    What is HDMI??

HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) isa standard for audio/video transmissionbetween a source and sinkover a singlecable.

HDMI support, on a single cable, any TV video

format including standard, enhanced and HighDefinition.

Provides a high resolution than the

    conventional LCD televisions i.e. 1080 * 1920

HDMI uses the TMDS-Transition MinimizedDifferential Signaling technique for theencoding purpose.

Standard on most new consumer A/Vequipment:TVs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, PCs

    Cell phones (soon)

    Latest specification is version 1.3a.

    History & Development

HDMI development was started by Hitachi,Panasonic, Sony, Philips, Thompson, &

Silicon Image in April 2002.The goal was to create an AV connector

which is backward compatible with the DVI.

    Different versions HDMI have been

introduced, from HDMI 1.0 to 1.3a , samecable is being used but differentthroughput.

authentication / encryption scheme used byHDMI/DVI.

HDCP is a specification developed by Intel

Corporation to protect digital entertainmentcontent across the DVI/HDMI interface.

The HDCP specification provides a robust, cost-effective and transparent method for transmitting

and receiving digital entertainment content toDVI/HDMI-compliant digital displays.

Implementation of HDCP requires a license fromIntel.

    HDMI Signaling

    HDMI usesTransmissionMinimized

    Differential Signaling(TMDS) to transmitthe information.

TMDS is way ofencoding the signalto protect it fromdegrading as the

    signal travels from

    14/30

The sending device such as an HD-DVD player encodes the

signal to reduce the no. of transition between 0s and 1s.

The step of encodingstep helps protect the signal quality byreducing the no. of chance for the signal to degrade.

One of the cables in twisted pair of cable carries the

signal itself and the other carries the inverse of that.

On the receiving end the device decodes & measuresthe differential between the signal and its inverse andcompensates for any losses.

In the HDMI connector the pins are divided asfollows:Three audio and video channels travels through two pins

each, for the total of six pins.

TMDS clock travels through a pair of pins used tosynchronize the incoming data.
