Question:What types of windows are there?

Answer:In your neighbourhood installations will be either “Retrofit” Windows or “Full Frame Windows.” The decision as to which type can/should be installed is ultimately yours, although the HD in store associates and the on site consultant can and will help you fully understand the requirements and costs associated with both.

Question:What is a ”Full Frame” window?

Answer:A Full Frame window is a replacement window that requires us to remove the existing window entirely including inside casings, door jamb, brick mold and cladding.

The installation of this type of window is usually required if there are signs of water leakage, wood rot or water damage on the inside drywall.

Measurements for this type of window are exacting and are best left to a professional.

Question:What is a “Retro Fit” window?

Answer:As the name implies, a “Retro Fit” window is a window that fits inside the existing frame. It is a less expensive alternative to a “Full Frame” but does result in the area of viewable glass being reduced by approximately 1 ½” around the entire perimeter.

A benefit of the window is that the interior casings and sills do not have to be removed and the exterior is cladded resulting in a clean and low maintenance finish.

Question:How do I know if I can use a “Retro Fit” window?

Answer:Your on site consultant will examine the existing windows and is best suited to offering you sound advice as to the viability of “Retro Fit” windows.

Numerous components have to be inspected and in some instances the actual style of the window surrounds has to be taken into consideration.

Question:How long does it take to get new windows installed?

Answer:Regardless of the type of window you decide to purchase, the windows are made expressly for your house and have an 8 week lead time.

Installation of the windows usually takes from ½ day to 2 days depending on the number of windows.

Please be aware that by law there is a 10 day (2 week) cooling off period for ANY contract signed within your home.

Page 18: Hd presentation

Question:What is the payment process once I decide to purchase the windows?

Answer:Your window purchase will be written up in a contract that will be reviewed with you. You are required to pay 30% of the contract with the order and at the same time commit to paying the balance after the installation is complete.

You can pay for your windows using a Home Depot credit card, American Express, MasterCard, Visa or personal cheque.

Question:What is the entire process related to purchasing windows & the installation through Home Depot?

Answer:The steps are as follows:1: Talk to a Millwork associate about your requirements. If possible bring them general sizes along with the type of windows you’d like to install.

2: The associate will arrange to have a on-site consultant contact you within 48 hours Monday – Friday. The consultant will arrange to meet with you at your convenience. The meeting usually takes from 1 to 1.5 hours.

3: After reviewing your wants and needs the consultant will prepare a quote for you outlining the window type, style and any features you might have in mind. The consultant will not provide you with window sizes.

4: The consultant will either leave you a quote or email a quote to you for your review. On acceptance he will revisit and finalize the contracts.

Why can’t I just use a stock door?Answer:If your house is pre 1979 there is a good chance it is not a standard size. Typically in your neighbourhood we finds doors ranging from 84” to 75” in height and as small as 27 ½ wide. In addition, many have either undersized or oversized sidelights.

Many homes also don’t have a proper sill plate which may require some work to properly install.

Both sidelights and transoms of large sizes were common in the past and are usually an integral part of the door. Understanding what you can and can’t do in relation to these components is difficult and easy to get wrong. An error in the size can be a costly one resulting in a door configuration which is either too small or too large.

Page 23: Hd presentation

Do I have to replace the sidelights and/or transom?Answer:With very rare exceptions, both transoms and sidelights are “fastened” to the frame of the door and are next to impossible to save. In most cases they have been both fastened and glued to the door frame. Additionally, most are in poor shape lacking Energystar glass and basic insulation.

As much as there is an expense to replacing the sidelights and transom, your consultant can work with you to find the most cost effective approach.

Page 24: Hd presentation

What gets replaced on my door?Answer:Everything…………………

The frame, sill plate, sidelights, transom & door are all removed completely.

The new door is “fitted”, squared, fixed in place and finished in both the inside and outside. The perimeter around the door is also spray foamed to ensure there is a tight seal surrounding the door.

If the door is painted, usually the frame and brickmold are also painted to match the door slab resulting in a spectacular appearance.

Page 25: Hd presentation

How long does it take to replace my door?Answer:Regardless of the configuration of the door you decide to purchase, the door is made expressly for your house and has an 10 week lead time.

Your old door is removed completely along with old insulation, casing & brickmold. The new door is fitted, squared, spray foamed, fastened and finished with brickmold or cladding.

Installation of the door usually takes ½ da y. The installers specialize in door installations and know exactly how to handle any challenges that might arise.

Please be aware that by law there is a 10 day (2 week) cooling off period for ANY contract signed within your home.
