Twine Roundup Recycling Program
Jupiter Hay is running a contest for non-profit organizations to participate in an awareness campaign to educate livestock owners (those that feed hay) to properly dispose unused twine and recycle. Did you know that the Federal Law prohibits burning or disposal of twine in regular waste/trash and you could be fined up to $10,000? The program will run May 1 through September 30. The group with the most baling twine , determined by weight, will receive a $500 donation from Jupiter Hay. Linda Mulkey will be in charge of collecting the twine. It can be brought to rides, meetings, or she can pick it up within a reasonable distance. You can also bring it to Carson City where she works. Contact Linda at [email protected] or 629-0817.

Moonlight Ride—July 20, 2013
Amy Casey, Bonnie Replogle, Jan McIntyre Note from Ride Host, Amy Casey: There were nine riders on the Moonlight Ride, including seven HDH members and two guests. The members were Amy Casey, Bonnie Replogle, Jan McIntyre, Leanne Cornell, Kendall Howard, Suzanne Brothers and Heidi MacDonald. The guest riders were Krista Moosman (11 ½ years old) and Jeff Moosman. We all met around 6:00 p.m. at Jan and Leanne’s campsite just west of the equestrian parking for a scrumptious potluck dinner. The sun was still good and hot at that time, so we took advantage of any available shady spots. By the time we were saddled up and ready to ride out at 8:00, the sun was sinking behind the mountains, which made a big difference in the heat. Before leaving camp, we all attached glow necklaces and glow sticks to ourselves and our horses. We also had a photo shoot before we hit the trail while there was still plenty of light.
We headed out along the NASTR (Nevada All-State Trail Riders) single-track trail that runs parallel to Eastlake Blvd on the east edge of the park. Before long, we were being serenaded by coyotes. The almost-full moon was bright and beautiful against the sky, but it still wasn’t completely dark. We then rode along the northern boundary of the park where we were enthusiastically greeted by several backyard horses that begged to join us. As we rode along next to Ormsby Lane, we encountered several scary, horse-eating objects in the semi-darkness, such as a woman on rollerblades with a flashlight, kids on a go-cart, and a rowdy outdoor party.
By the time we reached the beach, our glow sticks were shining brightly (except for the ones that had been stored in the tack room of my trailer for three years!). Note to self: Always use freshly-purchased glow sticks for moonlight rides. The sky was black now, except for that gorgeous moon. As we rode south along the beach and in the lake, the moonlight glistened on the water and cast moon shadows of horses and riders on the sand. The air temperature was now perfect—not too hot and not too cold! We arrived back at our rigs two wonderful hours after we began.

Blue Lake / Tamarack Lake Ride—July 28, 2013
Note from Ride Host, Deb Denkler: There were a total of 8 riders, 7 of them participating in HTAP. Everyone was ready and the ride started right at 10:00 a.m. We rode for about 5 hours with a half hour lunch break midway. The weather was awesome about 78 to 82 degrees. All the horses did very well with the water crossings along with the tight single path up and down grades. We all had a wonderful day with no problems and I think that everyone would like to repeat the ride again or something similar. It truly was beautiful, but then you really can't go wrong with riding in the Sierra. The Horsemanship Clinic Level II was held at the Fernley Rodeo Arena on a rather warm day. Clinician, Tony Sumner did a wonderful job as usual, demonstrating several ground work maneuvers with his horse and then working with each participant to ensure that everyone was on track. There was a break for lunch followed by the under saddle portion. This is a clinic where you can learn a lot about you and your horse and have fun.
