• Expected £72k for a 4 Year Engineering Apprenticeship(Hogarth & Hasluck paper, Institute of Employment Research, Warwick university, 2003)

• Assuming over 4 years: 60% of time learning40% of time contributing at Band 4 level

• Training costs picked up by Education Y&H

• Education Y&H incentive payment £6.5k

• LTHT insisted we employ at AfC Band (Band 1),some Trust do not!

Lessons Learnt• Some managers and scientists don’t understand apprenticeships,

unexpected enthusiasm from others!

• Best to Advertise - School February ½ term week for September start date

• Assessment day vital – Applications are all very similar(note: 25% female applications in Engineering)

• Wait for 100 applications per post – (we closed slightly too soon)

• 3 classes of applicant:- School leaver- Career change- University fall back
