CLIENT BRIEF

The client, CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute (Formerly CSIR Centre for Mathematics Modelling and Computer Simulation) is a unit of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, a premier R&D organization in India. Their vision is to develop capabilities for addressing critical issues of scientific significance and social benefits using mathematical modelling and computer based simulations. The client works on various projects in the fields of science and technology that include aerospace, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, engineering physical sciences etc.

Ever since its inception, CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute has initiated many programs like modelling of crustal strains in the Indian crust using modern satellite based Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, study of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal, study of increasing levels of pollution in oil fields in Assam, study of ocean climates in the field of atmospheric science, pollution of oil and so on.

CLIENT REQUIREMENTS

The client had been an early adopter of

computational technology to aid its research

activities. It had initiated number of programs that

demanded even more intensive computing power

with high performance for a very demanding, data-

intensive environment. Since they wanted a world-

class computing environment for scientific research,

they required an efficient IT partner that could help

them with the following:

ŸExpansion of computing capabilities to meet

stringent computing requirements for multi-

discipline scientific research

ŸDeliver high performance computing for a

demanding data-intensive computing research

ŸMaximize the use of multi-core architecture

SOLUTIONS OFFERED

HCL offered the following solutions along with

Scientific Application Benchmarks (WRF, MoM,

OpenFoam) to meet the high performance

computing requirement of the client-

ŸDesigning, installing, testing, commissioning and

monitoring of the data centre

ŸCPU Based Systems – 362.09 Tflops on 1088

compute mode or 17408 compute cores with total

of 69.6TB memory with the following

configurations -

» Intel 2 x E5-2670 2.6GHz 20MB cache

(16 cores per node)

»64 GB memory

»

»

300GB 10K RPM SAS disk

56 Gbps Infiband cable FDR connectivity

» 2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet port

ŸBlade Architecture to reduce cabling

ŸHigh speed Interconnect (FDR)

ŸStorage

» 2 Peta Bytes of storage having Lusture

(open source) File System

» 20GB/Sec throughput performance

Ÿ56Gbps FDR Fat tree topology in 100% non-

blocking architecture

ŸRed Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Operating

System

ŸAdvisory and benchmarking support for

developing a series of extensive benchmarking

simulations for climate modelling, weather

simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics

(CFD) and other related applications

HCL helped the client install India's largest CPU

based HPC system. The data centre setup by HCL

met all the industry standard requirements. It

contained 25x 42U Racks. HCL also fulfilled other

critical support infrastructure requirement for smooth

running of the HPC system at the site. These

included -

ŸChilled water cooled Rear Door Heat Exchanger

(RDHx) on IT racks

ŸCooling infrastructure like chillers plant to control

temperature, humidity, dust etc.

ŸPower back up for uninterrupted lighting and

cooling at the HPC system

ŸMaintenance of security at the site using Digital

IP based CCTV surveillance system, Biometric /

smart card based doors

ŸMaintenance of safety at the site by installing

intelligent microprocessor based fire detection

and alarm system, smoke and water leak

detection system and so on

Ÿ24x7 manpower to handle High Performance

Computing and Data Center setup

BUSINESS BENEFITS

Ÿ

Ÿ

Ÿ

Ÿ

92.34% High Performance Linpack (HPL)

benchmark achieved

Higher accuracy in simulation leading to greater

productivity of the scientists

Faster Analytics-Mathematical modeling and

simulation can be run quickly and efficiently

Faster ROI due to faster completion of the project

HCL offered the solutions along with Scientific Application Benchmarks (WRF, MoM,

OpenFoam) to meet the high performance computing requirement of the client
