Brief on Painting

BEFORE PAINTING

REMOVE as much furniture as possible.

COVER other surfaces.

PROTECT light switches, electrical sockets, window frames and woodwork with masking tape.

REMOVE flaking or peeling paint with a scraper. Then, sand and dust off the surface.

PATCH UP cracks or uneven surfaces with appropriate filler. When filler is dry, sand and dust off the area.

Make sure the surface is CLEAN, grease-free and dry.

TOOLS AND THEIR USES

1. Sandpaper: for smoothing out uneven surfaces.

2. Scraper: to remove peeling paint from the surface.

3. Turpentine: to wipe off oil-based paints easily.

4. Clean rags: to wipe up splattered paint.

5. Masking tape: to block off objects from being painted.

6. Covers: old newspapers or canvasses used to cover the floor and furniture.

7. Brushes and rollers: choose the right type according to your purpose and surface.

TOOLS AND THEIR USES

8. Paint tray: to mix paints and contain your roller.

9. Sticks: to mix and stir paints with.

10.Filler: to fill cracks or holes in the walls.

11. Sponge and squeegee mop: to wash down walls and ceilings respectively.

12. Containers: to soak brushes, rollers, etc. and to hold other odds and ends.

13. Extension poles: to reach higher areas.

14. Protective gear: face masks, caps, gloves, etc.

PEELING

Caused by moisture on the wall, poor surface preparation or using the incorrect painting system. This defect happens on walls, ceilings as well as wood or metal surfaces.

SCRAPING

Loose paint must be removed

You can do it by using scrapers

Protect your eyes when scraping overhead

Remove as much loose paint as possible

Wash and rinse

SPACKLING (PRE-PAINT)

First CLEAN the crack or hole by scraping away loose paint chips or plaster or wood...

SAND lightly if necessary

For "Light Spackling" you can paint over the repair right away

For "Thicker Applications" you need to wait for the material to dry internally (usually 1/2 hour)

SPACKLING

On the "first swipe" you fill the crack, leaving some excess above the surface...

On the "second (or third if necessary) swipe" you angle your blade more vertically and remove all the excess, leaving only the crack filled with Spackle!"

HOW TO PAINT?

Start with the CEILING before painting the WALLS.

Move on to the areas around DOORS, WINDOWS, CORNICES and finally SKIRTING.

Paint the difficult areas like CORNERS and EDGES first.

Paint should be applied in overlapping, CONTINUOUS strokes.

Always paint MORE THAN one coat of paint, allowing for appropriate drying time between coats.

Each coat of paint should NOT be too thick!

ROLLING - CEILING

1. Attach the long extension stick to the roller handle

2. Load up the skin with enough paint, but NOT to the dripping point

3. Always roll from side to side, while stepping backwards along the floor

4. Keep the open end of the roller away from you, and keep a LITTLE on the heel end as you roll from side to side

5. Cover an area about 4ft by 3ft before getting more paint

6. Roll over the last wet area just slightly

Assuming the ceiling color is DIFFERENT from the wall color... refer to the Diagram Below and follow the Numbered Steps in the list below the Diagram!

ROLLING - WALLS1. Attach the long extension stick to the roller handle

2. Assuming you're right-handed, start at the RIGHT side of the wall and work towards the left

3. Load the skin with enough paint from the tray but not to dripping point

4. Roll UP to the top brushed area and DOWN to just above but not touching the base area using the same "pressure"

5. Don't "work" the roller trying to make the paint spread

6. Roll down to the bottom and up to the top about two times, then get more Paint onto your roller, leaving the very bottom for brushing

7. Go over the last painted wet area just slightly as you move to the left (for right handed users) each time

THINGS TO NOTE

Read instructions Labels contain important information and advice that you

should read before starting any paint job

Stirring All ready-mixed paints must be stirred thoroughly before use.

Stir until the colour of the paint is homogenous.

Loading the brush Do not overload the brush or it will drip. Dipping only the last

one-third of the bristles is enough. Excess paint can be wiped off on a piece of string tied across the can.

THINGS TO NOTE

Cleaning Always clean off any splattered or spilled paint immediately

Wash all equipment immediately after use _ For emulsion paint, use water_ For oil-based paint, use turpentine as specified

Paint Responsibly Do not dispose of unwanted paint down the drains

Allow paint to dry out in the container before dropping it into the bin

Do not leave paint chemicals in black polythene bags in the sun as they could combust

SAFETY GUIDELINES

In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with water. Seek HELP if pain persists.

On contact with skin, wipe immediately with a cloth and wash with water and soap. DO NOT use paint thinner to remove paint from skin.

Close lids of paint cans tightly after use.

Store leftover paint in a cool, dry ventilated place.

Use a garbage bag for items that you wish to dispose of.

Make sure there is adequate VENTILATION when painting.
