Review
• Yesterday we talked about travel/trips. Where in Nebraska would you like to go?
At Restaurants
• Have you been to an American “sit down” (not fast food) restaurant yet?
• What was different from Japan? What was similar?
Going out to eat: “Sit Down” restaurant
• More formal (may have dress code)• More expensive• Takes longer: 1-2hrs, no less than 30 min• A hostess seats you and possibly gives you menus• A server/waitress/waiter brings water, takes your
order, serves your food, brings the check• Check is paid at the table or at cashier (if in black
folder, it is paid at the table – if unsure, ask).
Role play
• Practice entering the restaurant: what will be said
After you are seated: Manners• Napkin goes on your lap• Elbows off table• Eat sitting straight up and making
as little noise as possible (no slurping)
• Expect to make eye contact• Expect to talk / ask questions• Do not talk while food
is in your mouth
Remember: BMW
Ordering Food
• Read the menu• Look up any items you do not know (phones?)
Common menu items: Appetizers1st course: smaller portions, not required to order
• Buffalo Wings• Cheesy Fries• Chicken
Quesadillas• Soup
Clam Chowder
Main Course
• New York Strip
• Crispy Chicken Salad
Drinks
• You may ask for “just water” – May be offered “bottled or tap”
Dessert
• Ice Cream Sundae
• Homemade Chocolate Cake
Paying: Itemized Bill
• The prices on the menu are BEFORE tax – not the amount you will pay for the item. Add 7-9%.
• The server will take the folder, process your card, and return the check to you for your signature and tip.
Paying: Tip (gratuity)• Tipping is expected at sit-
down restaurants– Why? It is part of the
server’s pay. Some servers only get paid $2.50/hr without tips.
• Normal tip is 15%, 20% (of before tax price) if your server was exceptional.
• You may leave after you’ve signed the bill.
