HCE Connection Manitowoc County Association of Home and Community Education
February 2017- March 2017
President’s Letter…
The New Year is amongst us and hope it has started
well for everyone. It has been cold for sure but we do live in
Wisconsin and it was going to happen. The holidays are over
and many of you were busy, but now is time to get back into a
HCE frame of mind.
I hope everyone is working on their projects for cultural
arts. I am entering something this year, which is going to be
interesting for me because I have not done it before. I was
always so scared because I am not the craftiest person, but it is
time to give it a try. I’m not promising anything but it will be
there.
The codes for the HCE hours are in the newsletter
because several people have asked for them. It is helpful when
we are calculating the hours. If you are not sure, just leave the
hours without a code and we will place it where it belongs.
These are hours that are dedicated to HCE events or activities.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Our Focus Studies are planned for the year. The
Community Outreach for the year is The Crossings, a
pregnancy program, located in Manitowoc that helps young
women who need assistance with a pregnancy and parenting
issues. They are accepting various donations. They are
starting a home for young women who do not have anywhere
to go during this time and need some kitchen items for it and
also items for the boutique at The Crossings. Food staples,
cleaning supplies and personal care items are among the items
needed.
Our February focus is “Are We Allergic to What We
Eat” with Abbey Bubolz and will only be at 1:00 PM. March
focus study is “Keeping Our Brain Fit as We Age” with Kim
Jackquart Franzen from UW Extension. Our April focus Study
is the Manitowoc County K-9 Unit and will be at 1:00pm only

also. Looking forward to learning to put to daily use in my
life.
Again, thank you to everyone for being part of our
organization and continuing to learn and apply what we need to
our daily lives. We can always use extra help with projects and
on the board. New people bring new ideas and that can only
help our group grow and continue to have an impact in the
community. To a great 2017 for all.
Sincerely submitted Amy Kohlmann

Ardith McDowell International Scholarship
The Ardith McDowell International Scholarship was established to
honor Ardith, a long-time member of the Wisconsin Association for
Home and Community Education, Inc (WAHCE), as retiring Letter
Friend Coordinator for Associated Country Women of the World
(ACWW) for eight and a half years. During that time Ardith
matched 648 women to write to each other from 230 societies in 42
countries all over the world. This scholarship is available to
WAHCE members only, for travel to a WAHCE supported
international project. It may be received only once in three years,
and is to be used for travel expenses. The application is due June
1st to the Scholarship Chair.
Memorial Leadership Scholarship
The Memorial Leadership Scholarship was established through a
memorial from the Betty Hilbert estate and the monies from the
WAHCE Legacy Fund. This scholarship ($200) is to be used to
encourage members of WAHCE to seek leadership training so they
may become capable, willing and enthusiastic leaders in the
organization. This scholarship is available to WAHCE members
only for registration to a leadership program. (Members of the
WAHCE State Board are not eligible.) The application is due June
30th to the Scholarship Chair and may be used for leadership
opportunities during the previous months from the last Scholarship,
as well as to upcoming leadership opportunities.

may be seniors in high school or college students continuing their
education. Applicants must be sons, daughters, or grandchildren of a
current Manitowoc County Association for Home and Community
Education member. This scholarship can be used for any field of
advanced study. The deadline to apply is April 1st of the current
year.
Ruth B. Sayre Scholarship
This $500 general education scholarship is available to a woman
who is a resident of North or South America, who shows financial
need, and has the ability to complete her education. The deadline to
apply is March 1st of the current year.
The HCE organization received a
“thank you” note from the
Salvation Army for the pillowcases
that the “Stitches of Love” donated
for their Christmas party. Over
100 pillowcases were delivered. A
“thank you” card was also received
from The Crossing for the baby hat
donations.
With the long winter days upon us,
it is time to get that sewing
machine up and running. There
are lots of kits for pillowcases and
Little Dresses for Africa available
at the UW Extension Office.

Other projects you might consider are sewing, knitting, crocheting,
or tying a fleece lap robe. Suggested sizes: 30”-36” x 42”-48”.
Fabric quilts should have two sides. A filler (an old sheet or
batting) can be used.
We are always looking for more cotton fabric, ¼” elastic and
double fold seam binding to fill the kits. Cash donations are
always welcome if you don’t sew.
Please continue to knit or sew cancer hats for chemo patients.
Yarn and cash donations are appreciated for this project as well.
Over 40 dresses were sent to Louisiana after the flooding. Thanks
to all who sew those dresses for children in need. It's not just girls
in Africa who need a new dress to wear! Girls in America can find
themselves looking for clothing also.

Our focus for our 2017 Community Outreach will be “The
Crossing of Manitowoc County”. The mission of The Crossing is to
offer life-affirming help to women and men facing unplanned
pregnancies, to provide services that will strengthen families- teen
parents as well as other families in need of support. Their primary
concern is for the children; enabling parents to better provide for,
nurture and give value to their families.

“Earn While You Learn” is the program they offer that helps
prepare current and expecting parents with educational videos about
prenatal development, infant health, parenting techniques and life
skills. The parents earn “dollars” that can be redeemed for baby
supplies and clothing from The Boutique and Pantry. We will help
stock the shelves by providing needed items. These items include:
Infant & Toddler Care: Diapers, especially sizes 3-4-5;
Huggies if possible because some children are sensitive to other
brands, Baby Wipes, Diaper Cream, Baby Shampoo, Formula
(Gerber Brand “Good Start”, and gently used clothing up to size 6x.
Household Items: Toilet paper, Paper towel, Napkins,
Kleenex, Baggies (all sizes), Laundry soap, Hand soap, Dish soap,
Aluminum foil, Plastic wrap, etc.
Personal Care Items: Deodorant, Toothpaste and
Toothbrushes, Hair brushes, Body wash, Body Lotion, Razors,
Shampoo and Conditioner, Feminine Hygiene products, etc.
Another opportunity to help is by supplying the kitchen in
“The Crossing HOME”, which opened recently and is designed to
offer young women, pregnant or with small children, the chance to
turn their lives around by teaching them life skills so they can live on
their own. Items needed include basic staple foods, canned goods,
baking goods, spices. Also needed are new or gently used dishes,
utensils, bake ware, flatware, cookware, pots and pans and small
appliances.
If you have any questions, please call Cindy Christianson at
775-4010. Thank You for your help.

How is Your Family
Coping with Mental Illness
Information provided by the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) –
Holy Family Memorial.
Each year millions of people are diagnosed with mental
illness. Family members commonly feel an overwhelming
sense of helplessness and anxiety and may secretly blame
themselves for the mental illness, believing that something
they did caused it. Since family members are often the key
to successful intervention, helping them cope is crucial to
helping those with mental illness. Use the following tips to
empower your ability to cope and intervene:
Learn about mental illness and its signs and symptoms.
Avoid falling into traps of shame and guilt. Reach out
for support from professionals or self-help groups.
Don’t ignore the needs of children. Let them know
they are not to blame for the mental illness and
provide information suitable to their ability to
understand.
Understand the patient’s responsibility for managing
the illness.
Take care of yourself! Schedule activities that are fun
and also make sure you have social support.
