Classic cocktail parties had a new sparkle this past holiday season when Hillcrest took in the crisp winter air, decorations and em-barked on a self-guided walking tour of delightful drinks, scrump-tious eats and fabulous retail shopping at the 2nd Annual Taste n’ Tinis on Thursday, December 16, 2010. With hundreds of hungry and thirsty Hillcrest consumers, the HBA sold over 600 tickets before the day of the event. Taste n’Tinis received glowing coverage from local news stations like FOX 5, KUSI and San Diego 6.

Many thanks to all who participated in Taste n’Tinis!

If it can be grown in Cal-ifornia, if it’s in season, and if there is a demand for it, you’ll fi nd it at the Hillcrest Farmers Mar-ket. The Hillcrest Farm-ers Market hosts 125 different vendors every Sunday and contin-ues to offer an enticing selection of hot and prepared international foods to eat on site or to take home.

Pick up a your organic coffee beans for the week along with a wide selection of pastries and artisan style baked goods. Then take your pick from our vast international selec-tion of Argentinean, African, Thai, Mexican, Russian, French, Italian, Mediterranean or Middle Eastern foods. Top it off by indulg-ing in gourmet chocolate, handmade by the market’s resident “Chocolate Lady.”

The market selection and atmosphere will arouse your senses as you walk the aisles and absorb the sight, sounds and smells.

You might not have known that the Hillcrest Farmers Market also offers traditional chair and table massages to help you balance and relax on your Sundays!

Don’t forget about the variety of origi-nal, hand made arts and crafts are al-ways included and on display in our colorful arts and crafts section of the market.

In addition to the wonderful gifts, food, and produce, the market boasts differ-ent events and activities each and every Sun-day. In the Fall months, the Hillcrest Farmers Market hosted Congresswoman Susan Da-vis, Councilmember Todd Gloria, and Super-visor Ron Roberts.

In December, the mar-ket welcomed Chef Jeff Rossman from local Hillcrest gem, Terra, who preformed a live cook-ing demonstration in the heart of the market.

Throughout the season, arts and crafts kept young market patrons busy with a pump-kin carving station for Hal-loween, a farmers market inspired trick-or-treat, and even an ornament making station for the holiday season.

It is no wonder that the Hill-crest Farmers Market was -- again -- awarded CityBeat’s

“BEST Farmers Market in San Diego” for 2010!

Hillcrest Business Association Newsletter | WINTER 2010-2011

Although Hillcrest is quite a few miles from San Diego’s beaches, our cigarette butts are not. The Problem:

• Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world. • Butts are frequently pushed into storm drains that fl ow tostreams, rivers, bays, lagoons and ultimately the ocean.• When submerged in water, toxic chemicals trapped in thefi lter leak out into aquatic ecosystems, threatening water quality for aquatic life.• Biologists have also found butts in the stomachs of birds, sea turtles, and other marine creatures.

As a concerned business owner, you can help!

The Hillcrest Business Association is partnering with the Surf Rider Foundation’s campaign “Hold Onto Your Butt” to provide low cost ashtrays outside businesses for customers to use. Businesses may sponsor an ashtray that will be located outside their business (at-tached to a street light, sign, or existing trashcan) for a low fee of $100. That’s one third of the cost! The Sur-frider Foundation will pay for the rest of the can and the installation of the can. And the HBA will be responsible for emptying the can each week.

By sponsoring a can your business logo will be featured on the can and you can help to proudly combat cigarette butt litter.

Please contact the HBA offi ce at [email protected] or (619) 299-3330.

HELP HILLCREST HOLD ONTO THEIR BUTTS! YOUR GUIDE TO FABULOUS HITS THE STREETS

The production of the 2010 HBA con-sumer street guide was completed in early December.

As the premier edition of Hillcrest’s “Guide to Fabulous”, the street map in-cludes over 35 listings of Hillcrest hot spots to eat, shop, play and stay.

A brain child of the HBA’s Marketing Committee, “Your Guide to Fabulous” was implemented by a marketing sub-committee made up of committed Hill-crest business owners. This project is an example of the ways in which HBA volunteers contribute to (see the spot-

light on HBA Volunteerism) and make the changes they want see in Hillcrest. Be it a street guide, a new light-ing project, or fresh new trees, HBA volunteers are the reliable spoke’s in the wheels that turn Hillcrest.

A special thanks goes out to all the businesses that supported this fi rst edition of the guide. The HBA looks forward to produc-ing this guide year after year, as one of the many efforts to keep Hillcrest Fabulous. For more info visit FabulousHillcrest.com soon.

SPOTLIGHT ON HBA VOLUNTEERISM

With the start of a new year, we often set lofty resolutions and unattainable expectations for ourselves. This year, the HBA would like to suggest a resolution that will help engage your business while you contribute to change you want to see in Hillcrest.

Did you know that most HBA projects are volunteer driven and implemented? The HBA is composed of over 1,200 member businesses like yourself -- all of whom have the opportunity to volunteer on various committees. Our volunteers are from diverse business backgrounds, and demonstrate the importance of giving the Hillcrest business community a voice.

For more information on how you can get involved and to learn more about the HBA and volunteer opportunities please contact [email protected] or visit HillcrestBusinessAssociation.org
