HAZARDS OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD

Genetically FoodsModified

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms (i.e.plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination. Althoug occurs un naturally by combination of different kind of species.

Harmful Effects of GM Foods

HEALTH RISKS

DeathsDozens of Americans died and several thousands were afflicted and impaired by ageneticallymodified version of the food supplementL-tryptophan creating Eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS).(It is a disease of sudden onset causing severe, chronic muscle pain, skin symptoms and other neurotoxic reactions) . 37 deaths reported and approximately 1500 more were disabledveryfirst commercially soldGM product was lab tested (Flavr Savr) animalsused in suchtests have early died.

Near-deaths and Food Allergy ReactionsAllergic reactions are misguided defense reactions against incoming ofGM food , the body senses an unnatural invasion. Cells in our body producing antibodies and white cells in response. This is like our brain's cells recognizing and rejecting mechanically "like a broken record. Each new food item produced contains many new potentiallyallergenic proteins., that proteins never before eaten byhumanity.

Food Allergies Examplesfish genes in tomatoes, It is a well-know fact that fish proteins cause most hyper-allergenic reactions, while tomatoes are not.POTATOES- potatoes expressing cod geneswere allergenic.CORN- evidence of allergenic reactions toGM Bt corn,

ORGAN DAMAGE PEAS- A decade-longstudy of GM peas was abandonedwhen it was discovered that they caused allergic lung damage in rats.

CancerDiseasesA genetically-altered growth hormone that could be theninjected into dairy cows to produces more milk. The consumption of milk from cows injected rbGH leads to an increase in IGF-I in humans cause increased rates in colon, breast, and prostate cancer.2. GM products have been developed with resistance to herbicides are commonly carcinogens.

Viral IllnessSuper viruses:Cauliflower mosaic virus CaMV, the most common virus used in genetic engineering - in soy , maize , cotton and canola. In this practice the use of virus parts to make plants resistant to infecting viruses. virus protein capsule , are used for this purpose. These so called "capsid genes" are combined with the CaMV promoter to ensure that they will be active in the host. The capsid genes have a tendency to recombine with invading viruses to create new pathogens that tend to be more dangerous than the original virus.

Bacterial Illness

GM maize plants use an ampicillin( an antibiotic ) resistant gene. The resistant qualities of GM bacteria in food can be transferred to other bacteria in the environment and throughout the human body causing society to be less receptive to common antibiotics.

Unpredictability and the Unknown Risks

Genes can be suppressed or overexpressed, causing a wide variety of results. Foreign genetic material in a host can cause other genetic material in that host to behave irregularly. Nutritional problems can also result from the transfer. In one example, cows that ate GM soybeans produced milk with more fat in it.

EFFECTS OF GM FOODS IN ANIMALS

Effects on GrowthEffects on Gastrointestinal Tract : Stomach erosion were reported in rats fed with flavr-savr GM tomatoes.GM soybean which caused inflammation in the intestine of salmons Pancreatic Effects : mice fed GM soya beans produces low amounts of -amylase enzyme.

No Regulated Health Safety TestingCompany producing the GM product present their internal company records of tests showing a GM product is safe - essentially having the fox oversee the chicken coup, the primary intent is to sell more, not less of their products .They consider their aim is not have to give the safety of biotech foods but interest in selling. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job." But the FDA has not assumed the responsibility. Essentially it is "like playing with public health

Radical Change in DietHumanity has evolved for thousands of years by adapting gradually to its natural environment - including nature's foods. Within just deacdes a fundamental transformation of the human diet has occurred. 60% of all hard cheeses in the US are processed with a GM enzyme.Brewery products are GM modifiedas well. The current result is that processed foods in the US already contain GM ingredientsIn short, the human diet, from almost every front, is being radically changed - with little or no knowledge of the long-term health or environmental impacts.

General Soil Impact

Toxicity to SoilSoil Sterility :Scientists found GM bacterium(klebsiella planticola) meant to break down wood chips, corn stalks and lumber wastes to produce ethanol - with the post-process waste to be used as compost - rendered the soil sterile. It killed essential soil nutrients, robbing the soil nitrogen and killed nitrogen capturing fungi. Anstudyshowed that GM soil microbes in the lab killed wheat plants when added to the soil.

Seeds

Extinction of Seed: ("the Death of Birth.")The failure of GM plant breeding has left global agriculture badly prepared for the challenges of the near future.

Plants :

Super weeds:Ithas been shown that genetically modified Bt endotoxin remains in the soil at least 18 months and can be transported to wild plantscreating super weeds - resistant to butterfly, moth, and beetle pests-potentially disturbing the balance of nature.scientists predict herbicide use will triple as a result of GM products.

Animal Bio-invasions:

Fish and marine life are threatened byaccidental release of GM fishcurrently under development in several countries - trout, carp, and salmon several times the normal size and growing up to 6x times as fast. Such accident has occurred in the Philippines - threatening local fish supplies.

Killing Beneficial Insects

Studies have shown that GM products can kill beneficial insects - most notably themonarch butterfly larvae and honey bees .

A study reported honeybees harmed by feeding on proteins found in GM canola flowers.

Insects

Super pests: The transgenic cotton was meant to kill - cotton bollworms, pink bollworms, and budworms - were once "secondarypests." Toxic chemicals killed off their predators, unbalanced nature, and thus made them "major pests."

Conclusionweve come to the conclusion that organic foods, ones that havent been touched by Genetic Modification, are better and healthier for us to eat. The risks to ones health are too great to go unnoticed, so itd be better to just avoid GM foods if possible.
