Why is it important to manage safely??
Three reason
Moral
Legal
Financial

Lets take an example of “British petroleum”
oil spill accident in 2010
In the BP Oil Spill, more than 200 million
gallons of crude oil was pumped into the Gulf
of Mexico for a total of 87 days, making it
the biggest oil spill in U.S. history.
BP is responsible for close to $40 billion in
fines, cleanup costs, and settlements as a
result of the oil spill in 2010, with an
additional $16 billion due to the Clean Water
Act

What is hazard?
A hazard is any biological, chemical,
mechanical, environmental or physical agent
which has potential to cause harm or damage
to humans, other organisms, property, or the
environment in the absence of its control.
![Page 5: hazard and risk](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062313/55a5147d1a28ab956b8b45ea/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What are common hazard?
I. Electrical Hazard
II. Chemical hazard
III. Noise hazard
IV. Height hazard
V. Slip and trip hazard
VI. Manual handling hazard
VII. Poor house keeping hazard
VIII. bullying hazard
IX. Aggression & violence hazard

What is risk?
Risk is the combination of the likelihood of
a hazardous event to occurring and the
consequences of the event.
Risk= likelihood x consequences
Consequence is also referred to as severity.
These terms are interchangeable

How do we carry out risk assessment?
1. List the work that are your responsibilty
A. People
B. Equipment
C. Activity
2) Identify the risk
A. Hazard
B. Who might be harmed
C. How?
![Page 8: hazard and risk](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062313/55a5147d1a28ab956b8b45ea/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
3) Estimate
A. Likelihood
B. Outcome
4)Evaluate the risk
5)Record your findings .
6)Review your findings.

What is risk Matrix?

How to control risk?
Risk control hierarchy
i. Eliminate the hazard
ii. Reduce the hazard
iii. Prevent from contact
iv. Safe system of work
v. Personal protective equipment
