3. American Heart Association – Lea Fisher
Presentation by Lea Fisher from AHA regarding curriculum and support available to teachers and district. Ms. Fisher also presented to the elementary PE teachers the curriculum for teaching students to make healthy choices. Additionally other programs are available to support staff such as Check, Change, Control and monthly newsletters. CCC will be piloted with café and bus staff beginning on October and will be considered as part of wellness plan across district in the 2018-2019 school year. Wellness newsletters will be initiated this year within Hays and AHA has materials to support these newsletters.

• The “Five For Life” component of the program encourages children to adopt the 5 health habits now so they have a good chance of living a long, healthy life free from cardiovascular diseases.
• Did you know that due to childhood obesity, this generation of children could be the first to not live a longer lifespan than their parents?• Currently, less than 1% of the population, and almost no children in the
United States ages 5-19, have ideal health.
Facts and Stats*• Diabetes dropped from 1.7 million to 1.4 million from
2008-2015 (first time in 25 years)
• Adult smoking dropped to 14.95% (lowest in 80 years)
• Consumption of full calorie soda dropped 25% since 1998
• Consumption of whole grains increased by 75% since 2000
• Obesity rates in children appear to be flattening (YAY!) but adult obesity rates are worsening.
• 24% of High School students use 3-vapor products (almost doubled since 2013)
