GRADUATING FROM

HIGH SCHOOL

BURNABY MOUNTAIN 2005

Page 12: Hayley’s vision project

I always enjoyed school, but never gave school work the attention it deserved. On the other hand, I was the star leadership student, a peer counselor, and always around to help out my classmates or teachers. I was the annoying kid all the teachers loved, and I got away with doing barely any work because of it. Then hit the realization that I wasn’t going to graduate with my friends!! At the time, this was the worst thing that could happen. So, I stopped talking my way out of it and did everything I could to pass.

DRIVINGAlthough driving is something most of you can do,

it is something I am just learning to do. Driving has given me the freedom I want out of life. Plus, its way more fun then waiting for the bus in the rain.

Fear of failure set me back years when it came to driving, so this past December, I studied my Learners book and was successful in passing my test. So beware! I am out and driving along side you now!

*I did have my learners in the past but once it expired I had to redo the horrifying test and failed it!! This was a bummer and it was 5 years until I tried again.*

TAKING ‘ME’ TIME

I always put the needs of others before myself. This, I realized, is not always a good trait. So, for the last year, I have been working on myself. I can only be the best version of me if I know me. Maybe not an accomplishment to others but this is something I will not sacrifice, and it is not always an easy task so I call it an accomplishment.

Page 20: Hayley’s vision project

I am an analytic learner. I like to keep organized, and follow out my goals, one at a time, until they are all completed. I need to start small in order to finish a task or I am overwhelmed. I would say this is the only area in my life where I just need simplicity.. Hence the boring slide.

Mission Statement:

I will live my life as honestly and healthy as possible. I will treat others with the respect and dignity they deserve. I will continue to value the loyal and healthy relationships in my life. The people in my life will be important and supportive, as I rely on my friends and family for stability. If I am unhappy I will change the situation I am in. I plan to finish school within the next five years, because it is important to me to travel and take time for myself. I will grow as a person through my education and life experiences. I want to be known as being a happy, successful and independent woman. As for my career, I do not need to be in a management position but enjoying my job, and having a passion for it. I will be strong in my beliefs as I always have been, and will stand up for them. I will not let people stifle me. I plan to live with no regrets, and take each experience as it is, while always trying to see the silver lining. I plan to buy an apartment in the lower mainland and be in a loving, stable relationship. I will always take time to smell the roses.

Why is mental health for me?

Personal: I find mental health and psychology fascinating. I have worked with mental health clients and also faced issues in my personal life.

Social: Speaking about mental health is taboo and makes some people uncomfortable. Making it easier to talk about is only the first step in helping people with mental health issues. Ignorance isn't bliss.

Career: It only makes sense that with my passion for others, I should harness it and give back the way I know how.

Page 27: Hayley’s vision project

Currently, there is jobs available in the mental health field but on the other hand, as many of these spots are with non profit groups, jobs are always at risk because funding is hard to come by.

A starting position in the mental health field would pay around $13. Benefits would be included depending on hours per week and working probation.

The most current trend in mental health is co-occurring disorders, which is any person dealing with a mental illness as well as a drug or alcohol problem. These things go hand in hand with almost all cases so it is becoming more and more valuable to be trained and educated on both addictions and mental illnesses.

Page 28: Hayley’s vision project

Getting the education at Douglas College, that I

need to get the job:

Page 29: Hayley’s vision project

Advanced Citation in Co-occurring Disorders

This program is offered at the New west campus, twice a year and would cost around $1600. This citation would be 3 semesters long, and is 18 credits.

Community Mental Health Worker citation

This program is offered once a year, from March-June and while part of the Health Care Support Worker program, is offered separate as well. It is one full time semester, with 2 practicum's. The cost for this is about $1600.

Page 30: Hayley’s vision project

Once I have conquered the world of mental health, I could

become a drug and alcohol counselor.

Or work with youth with mental illnesses.

Both would be challenging and rewarding so I would take

either.

TIME MANAGMENT

Page 32: Hayley’s vision project

Time management to a daydreamer like me is still a bit foreign, but I grasp the concept. I am a work in progress and so is my new sense of time management but oh boy has it already taught me a few things.

For instance, I actually had to think about the amount of time I spend inside my own head.. And on my iPhone reading stuff on wikipedia that I am not even interested in!

Anyways, this whole thing makes sense. Time is valuable, and bosses don’t like employees who constantly day dream so I have to schedule in this stuff, giving my all in the workplace. Win win I say.

Fiscal responsibility and literacy

The world of mental health is not a glamorous one. Nor does it pay extremely well, so one of the most important skills I can have is financial responsibility. In my career, I may have to budget at my non profit job. In my personal life, I could shop myself into bankruptcy. Definitely not the most fun thing to do, but living within my means is more enjoyable then owing my life to a little piece of plastic, which charges me interest each month.

The future…

Page 36: Hayley’s vision project

“Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.”

-Niels Bohr

Page 37: Hayley’s vision project

I don’t know what the future holds, but I’ve an idea of how I would like it be. So lets journey through it.

Page 38: Hayley’s vision project

London, England

This is where my journey begins.

Page 39: Hayley’s vision project

I see myself living in two places in the future. Vancouver or London, but for the sake of my project and because I am a dreamer I’ve chosen London.

The second I stepped of the plane in London, in 2006, I was in love. It is where my heart is now, and where I want to make a life.

So how am I going to make this a reality?

Page 40: Hayley’s vision project

I will get there by being successful now.

5 years ago I made a choice. I will not move to England without an education. (I’ve pulled pints for a living already and want more for my life.) So after putting school off for those 5 years, I am here and making the first steps towards my future.

I have applied for the co-occurring program at Douglas, and am waiting to hear back. I have a plan b just in case. But education is a must.

Next, finish school, while working because a girl still needs money to shop!

Page 41: Hayley’s vision project

Here is a big step:

Actually move to England. Shortly after, I will fall in love with Prince Harry and I will finally become a princess.

I realize this may not happen. In any event, I must be happy with whoever I marry. That is all I *hope* for.

Page 42: Hayley’s vision project

WOW. Dream house in England!!

Page 43: Hayley’s vision project

One of these bad boys will do.

Page 44: Hayley’s vision project

But how amazing would one of these be!!

Page 45: Hayley’s vision project

My interests will be the same, because they have always been the same. These are the things that make me happy and that isn't worth giving up.

MY BELIEFS & FREEDOM

Page 51: Hayley’s vision project

I must be happy. I must be in healthy, loving relationship. I need my own time. I need freedom to move and explore and say what I feel and think. I need support and love. I need to be me. I have to enjoy my job. I need friends and fun in my life.

Without any of those things, I will not be. Will I need help? Without a doubt. Will I make mistakes and fail sometimes? How could I not. But regardless of what happens, it is my life and the way I chose to take it, is just that. Its my choice. The world is my oyster, and I promise I won’t waste it.
