ECOSYSTEM AREAS
BON ACCORD CREEK VEGETATION INVASIVE SPECIESBON ACCORD CREEK AT THE TRAIL CULVERT
PONDS AND STREAMSBon Accord Creek and Hawthorne Creek run through Hawthorne Rotary Park. These connect through two moderate size ponds before draining north, eventually reaching the Fraser River. These creeks have been modified from their course due to urban development and the installation of water main pipes. These streams support fish populations; however, the quality of habitat is not high due to their relatively straight alignment and lack of in-stream complexity.
The ponds also contain invasive species which are impacting native fish and amphibian species. These include non-native carp and bullfrogs, both of which are aggressive predators. These streams and ponds have the potential to provide a high level of biodiversity through restoration and enhancement efforts.
ECOSYSTEM AREASThe existing presence of fill material covering the bog negatively impacts the ability of the peat to retain water which is a key function of a bog ecosystem.
Previous development within and surrounding the park has altered soil characteristics and hydrology, resulting in a transition of the vegetation community from bog indicator species to species more indicative of drier, upland ecosystems. As such, the ecosystems are not functioning as they would in their pristine form.

HAWTHORNE ROTARY PARK MASTER PLAN
DECEMBER 6, 2017
A new area with rich and diverse riparian habitat will form the south boundary of the park. Wetland plants and forest edges will recreate a strong natural buffer for the park. The roadway, park areas and the water play waste water will be slowed and cleaned through this ecosystem.
The adventure play areas in the heart of the park express inclusivity and multi-generational design. After graduating from the Toddler Park the children will already be familiar with the nearby kids play and youth plaza. By concentrating these amenities whole families can enjoy the park together. Nearby seating for parents in either the shade or the sun mean it’s easy to keep watch of the little ones.
