Teacher Mr. Brockhaus launched the Bellevue Elementary Run/Walk Club as a way to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle. His goal was to reach as many students as possible, and as Mr. Brockhaus notes, “With options of running, jogging, or walking, all the students can be successful and participate at a level that suits them.” Every morning during lunch recess, the school doors fly open as students of all ages race to the starting line to begin their quest for the much-coveted “Toe Tokens.” Five of these highly prized tokens equal one mile with students racking up as much as 3 to 4 miles per day. The Run/Walk Club runs for 37 days and usually ends around the end of October, depending on weather. Coach Brockhaus emphasizes the importance of his volunteer Run/Walk Club Crew, “Volunteers are what makes our Run/Walk extra special. Since we keep track of students' mileage, we need help checking them in quickly so they can get to lunch. We also have parents monitor the course and hand out sticks. The club would be extremely challenging to run without the volunteers! We have just over 20 parents helping out with Run/Walk Club, and I appreciate every one of them!” A Hawk High Five to our 2015 Parent Volunteers: Nicole Alexander, Sarah Anderson, Patience Blink, Chris Crisman, Andrea Diaz, Tiffany Floro, Deanna George, Jenny Ginter, Kristy Greenawalt, Jenny Hall, Lori Keaton, Jessica LeBlanc, Julia Mashek, Amy O’Toole, Julie Robbins, Michelle Romero, Betty Ross, Liz Sabau, Elizabeth Shannon, Christine Stuck, Karen Thomas, Melissa Valek, Albanie Walker, Katie Wallman, and Sue Young. Art Fun! Ms. Silvia Wells, artist from El Museo Latino in South Omaha, joined Mrs. Pierce to teach two art lessons related to the Latino culture starting on September 28th. Kindergarten through sixth grade students will take a field trip to the El Museo Latino on October 21st. A special thank you to Mrs. Melissa Valek for writing the grant to make this wonderful opportunity happen for our students. The grant is funded by the Nebraska Arts Council and El Museo Latino. During the 2014-2015 school year, Caitlyn Robbins and Mrs. Evon's fourth-grade class were entered into the local Family and Community Education essay and art contest. Mrs. Pierce and Mrs. Evon helped to facilitate the activity with the students. The theme of the contest was "Responsibility Counts." Caitlyn Robbins won the local contest this past summer, received a $10.00 award, and was recognized at this group’s monthly meeting at the Omaha Extension Office. Her art went on to the Nebraska State level and recently won second place. She received a certificate and $25.00. Congratulations, Caitlyn!!!

Singin’ On Saturdays

The Bellevue Public Schools Music Department is pleased to announce its annual “Intergeneration Choral Concert” featuring the BPS Saturday Chorus, the BPS Elementary Music Faculty, and the Bellevue Choral Arts Society. The concert will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 10th in the auditorium at Bellevue West High School, 1501 Thurston Ave.

Fifth and sixth grade students from the district elect to participate in the program, practicing for 2 hours on Saturdays. “This year we are pleased to have nearly 100 students registered for the chorus,” said Melissa Ziegler, one of the Saturday Chorus Directors. The program was designed to give students who love to sing an opportunity to sing in a large group. “One of the highlights of our program is the ability to show our students how singing can be a life-long activity,” said Jennifer Johnson, the second Saturday Chorus Director. The concert will also feature a piece performed by the BPS music teachers.

Red Tailed Hawk 5K and Fun Run/Walk Over 400 students participated in the annual fun run hosted by the Bellevue Elementary PTA on Wednesday, September 29th.
