Some people are afraid of spi-ders, while others have afear of flying. In my profes-

sion, I tend to meet people whoare afraid of color! Surroundthem with beiges and creams andthey are happy, but throw in a lit-tle fuchsia or orange, and theypractically start hyperventilating.

I experienced this firsthandwith my recent clients, Carl andCatherine. The couple hadbought a fixer-upper severalyears ago and spent a lot of timerenovating it. They did a greatjob, but must have used everyconceivable shade of white andbeige.

The bedroom consisted of tancarpeting, mocha-colored wallsand a wall of white closets. Carland Catherine wanted the bed-room to be a restful oasis thatwould whisk them away from thechaos of everyday life, but thelack of color made the room feeldrab, which can happen when aneutral palette is not used cor-rectly.

They were willing to introduce

some color to their space, butwere a little nervous. So I gearedup to give them a space that unit-ed the neutrals they loved withthe color they lacked.

People are often afraid to com-mit to color because they thinkthey will soon grow tired of it. Butcolor mistakes don’t generallyhappen when people pick thewrong color; they happen whenpeople pick the wrong value(lightness or darkness) of color. When this happens, walls canseem too dark or too light in rela-tion to floors, ceiling or other sig-nificant elements.

When designing a room, I liketo stick to a 60-30-10 rule. Sixty

percent of theroom is wall color (which staysneutral); 30 percent is upholsteryand drapery (more in the neutralpalette); and 10 percent is in theaccents (the color). Carl andCatherine's new bedroom wouldfollow this rule.

I started by replacing the tancarpet with dark-wood engi-neered flooring and paintingthree walls in a rich creamyshade. On the fourth wall I used adeep plum, a mid-tone colorinspired by nature that acts as aneutral backdrop. This is a greatcolor for anyone who’s a color-phobe.

I positioned the bed against thisnew accent wall and gave it a

linen headboard with nickel-nail-head trim. A neutral duvet withdark accents helped to ground itall. I then flanked the bed withcrisp white night tables and silverpendant lights that sparkleagainst the dark wall.

Across from the bed, I placed anatural-toned wood desk and ahammered silver chair. In a cor-ner, near the desk, I added a gor-geous linen armchair with nickel-nail-head trim for added sparkle.

The wall of white closets wasquite a challenge. Carl andCatherine needed the storage, butthe six monolithic units in a rowreally overwhelmed the space. SoI left two units on either end andreplaced the middle two with a

long, low modern dresser thatcomplements the white bedsidetables and picks up the woodtones of the flooring.

For additional visual interest, Iinstalled graphics of cherry blos-soms on the closet-door panels.Cherry blossoms were the inspi-ration for this space, after all, andnow act as gorgeous works of art.

Carl and Catherine's fear of colorresulted in an ultra-bland bedroom.By introducing the perfect palette, Ihelped cure their color-phobia andgave them a serene space they willenjoy for years.

What is one of the hottesthome improvementtrends? Garage

makeovers, because the right garagedoor will not only enhance the beautyof your house, but increase its valuetoo. Just as much as having the wronggarage door, a damaged or unkeptone will decrease the value of yourhome. Garage doors are often the single

largest feature for thefront of the house andwill play a major factorin complementing theoverall style of yourhome. Consumers oftenconsider the garagedoor as just somethingto cover the openingwhere you park yourcars. But this shouldnever be overlooked.Garage makeovers willmake a difference andbring undeniable advan-tages to your home. So, what is the right

door for your home?

First and foremost, it is to select adesign that can be well-integrated toyour existing architectural style. Youdon’t want your new garage door tostick out like a sore thumb; you wantit to appear as if it has always been apart of your property. Quality is next. There are many

garage doors in today’s market withvarying degrees of quality. MartinGarage Doors offers you the finestquality for your money. Keep in mindthat quality includes both materialand warranty. Also, material, tensilestrength, galvanizing, hardware andfinish play important roles in theoverall quality of doors. There arevarious types of warranty coverage. At Martin Garage Doors Hawaii, westand behind our product with thebest warranties in the industry.Safety is key. Your garage door is

the largest moving part of your homeand it is of utmost importance tomake it safe. Regulations require thatthe door, if connected to a motor, beequipped with safety sensors andautomatic reversing. With a Martindoor, safety is taken to the next level. For example, our doors come stan-dard with low-profile hinges, reverseangles, hemmed-track edges, rollershields and many other features tohelp protect you and others frominjury. When doors are connected toa Martin operator, you can beassured that our force sensors arecalibrated to meet or exceed industrystandards. Our springs have a lock-onbracket to reduce the chance ofinjury or damage from brokensprings. Plus, we exclusively offer theonly door with a controlled-descentdevice, which ensures the doors willnot free-fall to the closed positionwhen not connected to an operator.Speaking of operators, more com-

monly referred to as motors or open-ers, be sure to select the operator thatis the right fit for you. Operators areno longer considered a convenienceitem, but rather a necessity. Threedifferent types of garage door opera-tors are available, each having itsown benefits:1. Belt driven system. This type of

operator is by far the quietest andsmoothest system on the market.

This model uses a sturdy rubber beltto lift the door and is ideal on anydoor especially when the garage isattached to the house or under aroom. This is the best operator on themarket, powerful and reliable.2. Chain drive system. This model

uses a chain to lift the door and canbe noisier than a belt drive system. This system is recommended for usein detached garages. It is reliable, effi-cient and affordable. 3. Screw drive system. This slow-

moving design relies on a longthreaded rod to open the door. It isperfect for one-piece type doors. When considering garage

makeover, you want to combinesecurity and functionality whenusing your garage door. Today yourgarage door system can be acces-sorized to meet your individualneeds. For instance, newer transmit-ters can be programmed to turn on alight in your house; wireless key padsallows easy access to the garage fromthe outside and can be programmedwith multiple- or single-use codes;multi-function wall controls can beprogrammed to lock out wireless sys-tems or turn on the operator lights. So when thinking about updating

your garage, consider the following:

• Increase the value of your home• Improve the appearance of your

home• Protect items stored in your

garage• Increase the use of your garage• Increase the security of the items

stored in your garage• Prevent easy access to your home• Reduce the risk of injury or prop-

erty damage• Quality, safety, warranty, and

Wa l k e r - M o o d yConstruction is aspecialist in

asphalt maintenance. In2000, the company wasasked to restore and seal-coat asphalt as part of aproject.  This work turnedout so well that Lyle Moodydecided this would providea steady flow of work forthe company.  After testingdifferent products,MasterSeal was selected asthe best — a product ofSealMaster.  New equip-ment was purchased to per-fect the process, and thecompany has focused onrepairs and sealcoating andis an authorized installer ofSealMaster Hawaii sincethe franchise came toHawaii in 2003.

The heart of an effectivepavement maintenanceprogram includes periodicsealcoating with an asphalt-

based emulsion pavementsealer. Left untreated, asphalt pavement will dete-riorate rapidly. It is madeup of asphalt binder androck. Almost immediatelyafter paving, the asphaltbinder combines with oxy-gen and becomes brittle oroxidized, leading to crack-ing and weathering soonafter installation. Moisturepenetrates the asphalt caus-ing further damage and

deterioration to the pave-ment.

Sealcoating protectsagainst oxidation. Anunsealed pavement allowswater to penetrate into andthrough the pavement struc-ture leading to base erosion, and ultimately pavementfailure. Sealcoating providesa protective barrier to stop

water penetration. Also ifleft unsealed, oil and gaso-line will soften and deterio-rate the exposed asphaltbinder. Sealcoating providesa protective barrier thatresists attack from oil andgasoline.

Walker-Moody has thelatest technology andtraining. You can call

today and talk to one ofthe company’s trainedprofessionals. They willcome out and reviewyour property, measurethe asphalt for accuracy, provide recommenda-tions in a formal propos-al, and will deliver on-time and on-budget proj-ects. Whether you want

a quick fix or a long-term solution, give theseprofessionals a callbecause they fix it all.Asphalt maintenancework for Walker-MoodyConstruction is nowapproaching 9 millionsquare feet.

advise the client onchoices if they wantadvice. There is also thematter of surfaces andtextures — should a wallor trim be finished withflat or glossy paint, smooth or textured. There are many choicesto consider, particularlyif the client wants awhole new look. If allthat’s needed is to refreshthe interior or exterior ofa home or office with a

point of meeting with theclient at the job site toassess the condition ofthe property, the amountof prep work that will beneeded, and to determinecolors of walls, siding, and trim. Once he knows

the scope of the job, heprepares a written quoteand time frame.“When people see our

Over the years, stonecompanies havecome and gone, but

even though preferencesand fads change over time, some things remain con-stant. One of those things isthat there always will be amarket for flagstone. Whilethere are always new prod-ucts that are purported tobe perfect for a lanai orpatio, there never has beenanything that can replacethe timeless, natural beautyof flagstone. Now, although flagstone

is actually a type of stone(usually a form of sand-stone), most people in thetrade today use the termflagstone to refer to stonesthat are random in size andshape. These randomstones can be composed ofslate, sandstone, schist andquartzite. It’s even possibleto make random flagstoneout of materials that aretypically used for indoors, like travertine or even mar-ble. At Hawaii Home Expo,

our focus for flagstones hasnow shifted to bringing thebest quality materials.

Although we realize thatthere always will be a mar-ket for the stones fromChina, we strongly feel thatit is time to bring a premi-um product to the masses. And what we have foundfor you is BrazilianQuartzite. It is available infour colors: Golden Beach,Green Nature, Noble Claroand Rose Pink. And if color

consistency is important(you may have experiencedthe inconsistent stonesfrom China already) theBrazilian stones really arethe best way to go. But it’snot just the beauty of thecolors that makes this aproduct above all others. The stone has a hardness of7 on Moh’s scale, is avail-able in different thicknesses

and sizes, andis relativelyfree from theridges andclefts presentin other stonesthat are often prone to chip-ping and shaling. If you’reconsidering flagstone foryour pool deck or lanai, come take a look at ourselection of Brazilian

Quartzite at Hawaii HomeExpo. Even your installerwill thank you for it! Makeus your one-stop shop foryour home renovations. AtHawaii Home Expo, manymore product lines areavailable to suite yourdesign and lifestyle needs:photovoltaic solar panels,LED lighting, Toto,Hansgrohe, Jacuzzi, Viking,Dacor, Liebherr, LG Studio, saunas, steamers, cabinets,

natural stones and porce-lain tiles.

The new owners of a 24-year-old Hawaii LoaRidge custom home

bought it last year with the inten-tion of “re-customizing” it. Theyliked the layout of the 9,822-square-foot view property andsecure, gated neighborhood, butthe alterations they had in mindfor the house were so extensivethey decided to rent until thework was completed. In August 2010, the couple

contracted with HomeworksConstruction and proceededwith a design plan and estimatedbudget with project coordinaterSarah VanDeVanter. The projectwould involve structural work, all new kitchen and baths, replacement of floors, doors, windows and cabinets, and theaddition of a ground floor masterbedroom suite and study extend-ing out to the pool deck. The big stipulation was the job

would have to be completedbefore Christmas. Homeworksaccepted the challenge and fin-

ished the project onschedule.Project manager

Heather Hickox saidthe mission was basical-ly to modernize thehouse and open it up tomaximize natural lightand ventilation.“The whole remodel

was geared towardpulling down walls andcreating a more openfloor plan,” Hickox said.“Whenever you makesuch radical changes to astructure, literally gutting somerooms, you’re never really surewhat you’ll find and have tomake a lot of ‘on-the-fly’ deci-sions. Plumbing and wiring oftenhave to be rerouted to accommo-date the positioning of new fix-tures and appliances.“Along the way we had many

meetings with the owners to givethem options on the new design, particularly if cost would beaffected.

“We com-pletely gut-ted thekitchen andbathrooms

and changed thelook to a more contemporarydesign. The open-beam ceilings inthe kitchen were retained andrepainted to brighten up what hadbeen a dark, closed-up room. Anisland was added with pendantlighting over-head, whichinvolved conceal-ing new wiringon open beams inthe ceiling.“In the bath-

rooms, we replacedexisting showers, sinks and tubs, and added new tile as well as granitecounters and hardwood cabinets. “We designed a new front

entry with a unique door and sidepanel arrangement. On eitherside of the standard-size maindoor are panels that are both dec-orative and functional, admittingair and additional light into thefoyer when open. It really was

the perfect finishing touch and itworks brilliantly,” Hickox said. You can learn more about this

and other HomeworksConstruction projects at booths215 and 217 at the BIA Remodel ItRight Expo, Aug. 26-28 at theHawaii Convention Center. reported on some of themost important thingshomeowners should askbefore investing in a solarPV system. The response

was so great we put togeth-er another round of insidertips from the pros atAlternate Energy, Hawaii’slocally owned, family-oper-ated solar energy providersince 1993.Here’s our advice:

• Be akamai and do yourresearch. Look for compa-nies with a long history inHawaii’s unique solarindustry.• Here in Hawaii, we’re

exposed to tradewinds car-rying ocean breezes. Thiscan be a catalyst to shorten

your solar installation’slifespan. Ask to see themanufacturer’s warranty, and if it covers corrosionfor coastal use. Beware ifthere are any mileageexclusions, which couldvoid your warranty.

The kitchen faucet isdripping, the showerdoors have white

stains, there is only a trickleof hot water in the masterbath, the dishwasher isn’tdoing a very good job clean-ing the dishes, the pool filteris taking longer and longerto clean, and now the hotwater heater has stoppedworking. If you’re thinkingthat the plumbing andwater-using appliance godsare waging war on yourpocketbook, you can fightback. The environmental-ists’ weapon of choice isHydroFlow. According to Harald von

Sydow, director of NanoTek-On in Honolulu, thecause of problems such asthese is an accumulation ofmineral deposits and corro-sion, something that occursin all of our homes and busi-nesses here in Hawaii. “There is a solution to

the problem,” von Sydow

said. “It’s an environmen-tally safe system calledHydroFlow. The advancedtechnology of HydroFlowprevents mineral buildupand can break down up to95 percent of existingdeposits.” When asked how

HydroFlow works, vonSydow eagerly explainedthe benefits of this systemthat uses no chemicals nor isthere a need to replace anyplumbing or cut into pipes.“HydroFlow is attached tothe plumbing in a home. Ahandy homeowner caninstall it in minutes or wecan install it. The systememits random varying elec-

tric fields in the plumbingthroughout a house or busi-ness. The electric currentsuspends the minerals in thewater flowing through thepipes, breaking up thedeposits and corrosion andwashing them away.”A side benefit is the

reduction of bacteria andalgae when HydroFlow isused in salt and fresh waterpools, and spas. This trans-lates into using up to 80 per-cent less chlorine.

These mineral deposits, also known as lime scale, cause all sorts of problems. They greatly interferewith the working parts andthe efficiency of appli-ances, hot water heaters, and solar panels.Consequently, your waterbills go up and your expen-sive appliances don’t lastas long as they should. Adding one HydroFlow

unit to the plumbing in yourhome will reduce water

usage, water and sewagefees, water waste, chemicalsused in fresh and salt waterpools, and spotting onshower doors and dishesand save money. And it’s safe, von Sydow

said. “Once it goes to work, your water retains its natu-

ral taste and is safe to drink— as good as bottled water.” Nano Tek-On special-

izes in environmentallyfriendly surface treatmentsincluding sealants for glassand natural stone, antimi-crobial coatings and self-cleaning surfaces.

During these diffi-cult economictimes, we are faced

with wonderful mortgagerates but financial uncer-tainty. And even if youhave made the decision tofind a home that is betterfor you, you will find thatinventories are very low.Something that manyhomeowners are doing isto tap into their homeequity, take advantage ofgood rates and remodelthe space they are in.Retailers are anxious tocut great deals, too. Theend result is homeownerswill be making an excel-lent investment in theirhome’s market value, butenjoy the beautiful woodin the meantime.

Wood flooring has longbeen known as a homeimprovement that can per-manently increase thevalue of your home whendone right. That is because

unlike the majority of floorcoverings, the right woodfloor can be something thatlasts a lifetime.

You can start research-ing wood flooring at PacificImports International.Located in Kalihi, the com-pany is proud of its beauti-ful 3,000-square-foot show-room, where trained pro-fessionals can show youwhat is available, tell youhow various products dif-fer from one another andwhat might be best for you. There is a lot to knowabout wood flooring andnot many know it as well asPacific Imports.

So let’s start by askingwhat are the basic types ofwood flooring most com-monly used in Hawaii? Themost traditional form ofwood flooring is calledunfinished solid. This is asolid piece of wood that’sbeen milled into flooring, which will be sanded andcoated in your home after it’sbeen nailed down. It’s gener-ally considered the most“high-end” of wood floors

because of the ability to cus-tomize the end product butalso because of higher instal-lation cost (man must dowhat the finishing machineusually would in a factory).

Next on the scene wehave prefinished solids. This is again a solid pieceof flooring, but the sandingand coating are done at thefactory using sophisticatedmethods, such as UV cur-

Abeautiful bathroom can be uplifting on many lev-els: It improves your home’s resale value and pro-vides you with a welcoming environment in one

of the most-used rooms of your house. If your bathroomhas become the room in the house you least want to visit,it may be time to consider some cost-effective upgrades.

A mid-range bathroom remodel can cost, on average, around $16,000 (and return 64 percent of that cost at thetime of resale), according to Remodeling Magazine’s 2011Cost. vs. Value Report. You don’t have to spend thou-

sands, however, to give your bathroom a fresh look. Hereare some high-impact, awesome upgrades that you canaccomplish for less than $200 each:

Work those wallsPaint is still the cheapest, easiest way to freshen a

room’s look, and that’s true even in the bathroom. Whilepainting a bath can be a bit more complicated than otherrooms because of obstructions like mirrors, showers, tubsand the commode, it’s still a project well within the abili-ties of most do-it-yourselfers. Good paint can be had foras little as $25, and most bathrooms will only need a gal-lon or two.

Once you’ve repainted, consider adding a wallpapermural. You’ve probably always thought adding wallpaperin a bath was risky, given the room’s usual humidity. Butmodern wallpaper options, like SmartStick byMuralsYourWay.com, can easily hold up to bathroomconditions. A patented adhesive allows you to easilyplace the material on nearly any surface — walls, win-

dows, that architectural niche above your bathtub — pullit down, reposition it, and even move the moisture resist-ant mural to a different wall. You can even customizewith your own wall photo by using your own originalphotography. Submit your photo through the website andthe company creates a custom mural using your artwork.

• Look for the proper licensing andaccreditations. At minimum, solarcontractors should have a C-60 statelicense and NABCEP certification. The North American Board ofCertified Energy Practitioners is the“gold standard” for PV and solar ther-mal installation certification.

• There are pros and cons to cen-tralized inverters or microinverters.Be wary of solar contractors market-

ing only one type of inverter.Every property has its own uniqueneeds.

• Impulse buying could poten-tially cost you tens of thousandsof dollars. With some under-standing on how solar PV worksbefore making your purchase, you’re protecting your house-hold from further electrical ratehikes for years to come.

ing, and the only work done in yourhome is to nail or glue it down. Yourfloor is ready to walk on almost theminute it goes down. And lastly, there is engineered wood

flooring, such as the Kahala Floors line.Engineered flooring involves taking aprecisely cut slice of the flooring woodand pre-installing it onto plywood.Contrary to popular assumption, this isnot done to be stingy on the wood.Rather, it is done to provide a moreversatile, stable form of wood flooring.Engineered woods can be installedbelow grade (where solids cannot) and

they also can be floated (wheresolids must be nailed or glueddown). Most engineered flooring issanded and prefinished in a factory, and with the right brand of engi-neered flooring, you are looking at alifetime product.Pacific Imports holds its next

Well-designed bathrooms rockroom. If your bathroom sportsa utilitarian overhead fixture,or a dressing-room-style lightbar above the mirror, you cancreate a whole new look for theroom by replacing those lightswith one — or more — contem-porary styles.Because your bathrooms

serve several functions, bath-room lighting should be flexi-ble too. Design pros often placemore than one light source in

bathrooms, even if the room isrelatively small.Adding a couple of wall

sconces in addition to a mainlight source costs little butallows you to lower lighting inthe bathroom when you’re inthe mood for relaxation. And astrong, overhead light sourceprovides practical illuminationfor putting on make-up or shav-ing, for example. It’s easy tofind cost-effective lightingoptions at your local home

improvement store.

Little things mean a lotYou can also make several

small changes in a bath thatwill have a big impact, fromswapping out cabinet hardwareto replacing an existing straightshower rod with a curved one.Depending on which projectsyou choose, you could accom-plish several for less than $200total.

You know it makessense to take fulladvantage of all the

benefits of solar power, butyou’re not sure what type ofsystem will work best foryou — a solar water heatingsystem, a photovoltaic sys-tem or a combination of thetwo.

The decision isn’t difficultto make when you have theright advice, the kind ofadvice you can get onlyfrom an experienced solarcompany with a backgroundin both solar water heatingsystems and the latest pho-tovoltaic technology.

Hi-Power Solar partnersRon Romero and MattAdams have a combinedexperience of 35 years assolar contractors in Hawaii. The company is a memberof the Building IndustryAssociation of Hawaii andBetter Business Bureau anda participating contractor inthe Hawaii EnergyProgram. Over the years, they have installed all typesof systems, but only thosethat have been proven effi-cient and reliable. To

ensure that the productsthey represent are “top ofthe line,” they travel tomanufacturing plantsnationwide to become fullyconversant with the tech-nology.

“Our No. 1  commitmentis customer satisfaction,”Romero said. “And conse-quently our best advertis-ing over the years hasalways been word of mouthand referrals. When a newclient contacts us, we aremore than happy to providethem with references ofcustomers who purchased asystem from Hi-PowerSolar.”

“Concern about the costof energy has never beengreater with high prices andimpending shortages,”Adams added. “Solar is atechnology within reach ofevery homeowner and ithas never been moreaffordable. Rebates on solarwater heating systems andfederal and state  tax creditsfor both solar water heatingand photovoltaic systemsare available.”

“Our policy at Hi-Power

Solar is to assess every cus-tomer individually to iden-tify the type of system thatbest suits their lifestyle andbudget,”  Romero said. “Ifyour need is simply to heatwater for the home, we cangive you a price for installa-tion. For photovoltaics, wereview your current elec-tricity charges and providea report on what you cansave. The savings will bebased on the system's sizeand the current usage andelectricity expenditures ofthe client.

“The upfront investmentis, of course, more for aphotovoltaic system thanfor a solar water heatingsystem, but, over time, theinvestment also is recoupedin savings.”

He pointed out that whilethe tax credits for installa-tion of solar water heatingsystems are 30 percent fed-

eral and 35 percent state upto $2,250 for solar hotwater, the maximum forphotovoltaic installations is$5,000 per system, per year.“It’s actually possible to getyour total monthly expen-diture for electricity downto a minimum charge ofapproximately $18,”Romero said. “I believe themain obstacle among con-sumers who have not madethe move into solar is con-fusion about the varioustypes of systems out theretoday, and  there are many. The photovoltaic system

we are currently installingis the most advanced withsuch features as a monitor-ing component that enablesthe home or businessowner to go online to checkthe health, performance, and efficiency of the sys-tem. We also are preparedto address concerns aboutaesthetics. "The key is cus-tomization — one size doesnot fit all. So, we invite any-one planning to upgrade, replace, or install a newsystem to contact us for afree on site consultation.

“We work with onlyproven local suppliers andtechnicians in order to sup-port the local economy. Weare also very selectiveabout the manufacturerswho produce our photo-voltaic panels and supportAmerican industry wher-ever possible,” Romerosaid.

Hi-Power Solar can pro-vide advice to the con-sumer on the best types offinancing programs avail-able for purchase of bothsolar and PV. Romerosaid that a home equity lineof credit is sometimes thebest option, or he can givereferrals to credit unionsthat are able to offer goodterms both to existing andnew members.
