Working together!
Recently, Sandra and I were invited to the U3A Torreveija to see
a very special speaker, Vivien Hayward. A lady who has a real
passion for her subject “Victorian Costume”. Who we are hoping
will delight our members with her presentation in the new
year.
We were warmly welcomed by everyone especially their
President, Penny Godfrey. We were certainly given the VIP
treatment and it was enlightening to see how they ran their
meetings, and the facilities they have available.
After their meeting and a leisurely lunch we discussed ways in
which our U3A’s could help each other.
We hope that in the near future that Penny and her
Committee will accept our invitation to visit us in the Vall del
Pop.
We are now moving into our summer break and I hope that all those members who are travelling to the UK or
further a field have a pleasant summer break with family and friends and have the opportunity to experience new
places, countries or just to enjoy the break in Vall del Pop.
Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you at the 5th September at the General Meeting, where we hope
we will be back in our new home the Social Centre, Jalon.

WANTED
TERESA’S RECIPE.
Here is a real treat, sent to us by Teresa Boyle. Perhaps a chance to make use of all the lovely
oranges we grow around here?
Orange and almond cake
50g plain flour
1tsp baking powder
225g caster sugar
250g ground almonds
250g unsalted butter, room temperature
1tbsp grated zest of orange
4 free-range eggs
80ml freshly squeezed orange juice
60g brown sugar
1tbsp marmalade
Handful of sliced almonds, toasted
Method Butter a round cake tin, approximately 20cm wide. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4.
Sift the flour, baking powder and add the ground almonds. Whisk the butter and sugar with the
orange zest until pale, then add the eggs one at a time. Fold in the dry ingredients with a metal
spoon. Pour the mixture into the cake tin and bake in the preheated oven for 45 mins or until
cooked. Don't open your oven door too soon until the cake is more than half way through its baking time. You might interrupt that initial stage and your cake could collapse
Meanwhile make a syrup by boiling the orange juice with the brown sugar. Leave to cool. Once the
cake is cooked, prick several times with a skewer to the base and pour on the cooled syrup. Leave
the cake to cool completely before brushing on a little warmed marmalade and sprinkling it with a
few toasted, sliced almonds.
Can be served as a cake, or covered with butter icing and decorated for a celebration cake or as a
dessert with orange segments marinated in muscatel or brandy and a little demerara sugar and
served with creme fraiche or vanilla ice cream.

Sorry Bill!
Last month things went a little awry! Here at the Newsletter, we get a bit
inundated towards the end, and sometimes we are not as sharp as we like
to think we are! Somehow, we credited Bill Bailey’s Tai Chi article with Bob
Welham’s name. This is clearly not Bob, but Bill next to Sandra (2nd
from
the right). Apologies all round.
BOOK LOVERS ENJOY SUN, SANDWICHES AND SOME SWAPPING !
Over 70 members enjoyed what everyone seems to refer to now as the
“annual” U3A Book Swap Group Tea Party ( well it is the second one we
have had!). It was held this year in the peaceful garden of David Brain
and Teresa Boyle, a setting ideal for spreading out, enjoying the
benevolent sky and sampling the mounds of typically English tea party
food. Sandwiches, cakes, biscuits, scones with jam and cream or
strawberries were loaded onto the tables in the shade … and not many
were UNloaded back into the kitchen at the end of the afternoon!
Hundreds of books came and went too - happy reading for the coming
hot weather!
At only 3 euros per head, it was a bargain, but even at that price there was
enough money left over for a donation to Jalón Valley Help, who kindly lent some
of their equipment. Many thanks to Group members Clare, Sally and Jan who put
in so much hard work - and of course to David and Teresa who made us so
welcome.
We had so many compliments about the scones that Teresa made
for the event, that she has kindly passed the recipe on for us ...

English scones
Although scones are very simple to make they often turn out too thin and
biscity, too dry or too doughy in the centre.
The secrets of making a good scone are:
a soft but not quite sticky dough,
patting (not rolling) to a thickness of 1in
Not over kneading the dough
And most importantly a hot oven of 7 / 220C
Ingredients
550gm/ 1lb self raising flour (or plain
flour + 4 tsp baking powder)
1 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
110gm/ 4oz butter
55gm/ 2oz caster sugar
300ml/10fl oz milk
Optional - 2 tsp lemon juice
1 egg, beaten, to glaze (alternatively
use a little milk)
Preparation method
Heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
Mix together the flour and salt and rub in the butter.
Stir in the sugar and then the milk to get a soft dough.
Turn on to a floured work surface and knead very lightly. Pat out to
a round 2cm/¾in thick. Use a 5cm/2in cutter to stamp out rounds and place on a baking sheet. Lightly knead together the
rest of the dough and stamp out more scones to use it all up.
Brush the tops of the scones with the beaten egg. Bake for 12-15
minutes until well risen and golden. Place immediately on a
cooling rack.
SUN SHINES ON U3A VALL DE POP PETANCA
COMPETITION
We had a beautiful day and lovely setting at Castells de
Castells on Sunday 26th May. It was a great start to the
first U3A Singles Knockout Petanca Competition for the
special trophy handcrafted by Peter Guscott. There are
currently over twenty regular players who meet every
Sunday morning in Castells and this week the
competition was between sixteen selected by a draw, the
winner of each game being the first to reach 9 points and
going through to the next round until the winner takes
all, namely the trophy and a
small monetary prize, which
was the two euro entrance fee paid by each player who took part in the competition.
After several closely fought games, with players very evenly matched, the finalists
George Warne and Harry Roskoss emerged to do battle. The winner would be the
first to reach 13 points and eventually George was victorious, winning 13 to 10.
Peter Guscott presented the trophy to him and this will
be engraved with his name.
Well done George and many thanks Peter for donating
the trophy.
The players all look forward to doing battle again next
year.

We received this email from U3A member Elaine last week ; Hello Folks,
I have just been informed by Hazel Simmonds that a dog has been poisoned on the track from Pepe's
Restaurant that exits at roughly the bus stop in Alcalalí. This is the second occasion that I have heard about
dogs being poisoned in Alcalalí so I think it is unwise to allow dogs off the lead. Please be careful as having
seen the results first hand of a dog eating this stuff it's dreadful.

Some useful information from Sheila Skinner
An elderly friend recently had an overnight stay in hospital. She awoke during the night, a bit confused and disorientated, couldn't find the alarm button nor the light switch and ended up out of bed, slipped and fell. Luckily she only bruised her btm and her dignity, but it could have been a lot worse. Those little LCD torches are so light and small to carry around, there is ample light at the click of the button and would have saved her a lot of trouble. I would certainly have one with me in her circumstances, as I do when in hotels and other unknown places in case of an emergency.
WHICH SHOE IS THE ODD ONE OUT ? AND CAN YOU DRIVE IN THEM?
Just imagine his hilarity when I took all these pinnacles of
perfection in podiatric protection to the local policeman,
tipped them all out of my bag onto his desk and asked him
to examine them as evidence!
No-one has been able to tell me whether I would be
breaking the law by driving in any of my footware, so I
thought I’d go to the horse’s mouth and ask. First off -
Jalón. The policeman was amazed that I had asked. “No
problema” he chortled.
Amazed, I listened while he told me I could legally drive
in all or none of these. Bare feet were quite acceptable
too!
Disbelievingly, I then went to see my own local law enforcement emporium in Llíber. Astonishment greeted
me once again. But then … a dissenting voice! A town hall bigwig,picked up one of my shoes, sucked in his
breath through his teeth and tutted. HE explained - at last - that the law is NOT specific on these things. It
merely states that footwear has to be “suitable”. No flip-flops then, and no completely open backs.
So the white shoes here are the only law-breakers.
For more than a year, I have thought it was a criminal offense to drive in any of these! So peace of mind for
me at least here in Llíber - but it shows that interpretations may vary in other villages.

La Xenia Shopping Trip - 30th May
The early morning rain soon turned to sunshine for our enthusiastic group of U3A
shoppers on the outing to La Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre. Some of us took along our
long-suffering other halves to carry the bags and hand over the credit cards and thankfully
remind us when it was time for a pit stop. There was a good choice of shops and
reasonable eateries: eg half a roast chicken, chips, salad and a beer for 6.50 Euros! Most
of us staggered back to the bus with steaming feet and laden down with bags not necessarily
containing what we had gone to look for in the first place.
Well, that gives a good excuse to go and do it all again! A good day´s shopping was
enjoyed by all.

MAYTIME TRIP TO PEÑÍSCOLA
47 U3A Members set off from the Rastro car park on Wednesday morning 8th May for our journey to Peñíscola. Before checking into our hotel we all enjoyed a scrumptious lunch at a local restaurant. After a few glasses of wine we were all getting on like old friends and so began our holiday together.
Our first organised outing was a guided tour around the old part of Peñíscola and then on to the Castle. It was then time to check into our 4* hotel. We unpacked, relaxed and then headed down for our buffet dinner, where we also helped one of our Members celebrate her 65th birthday.
On our second day we headed for the beautiful town of Morella, located in the northernmost tip of the land of Valencia. As you approach Morella one can’t help but be impressed by the massive walls and imposing towers that protect the town. It rises up before one’s eyes and is an awe-inspiring sight and crowned with a robust castle, at over 1,000 metres above the sea level. Another lunch and then onto San Mateu, situated in the north of Castellon. The sun shone on us all as we enjoyed relaxing in the beautiful arcaded square (plaza major).
Day three we were left to relax or take in more of Peñíscola before meeting up for yet another delicious lunch, unfortunately it all came to an end and our glasses were finally empty, so we boarded our coach and headed for home.

FROM THE MINUTES OF THE MAY COMMITTEE MEETING ....
CHARITY FUND RAISING. Many members have asked why we, as a U3A don’t give more to charity.
The fact is, by our constitution, we are not allowed to give our own funds to charity. As from September, we
shall get around this restriction by asking a designated group to organise charity fund-raising events. If you
have thoughts about this, let us know at the newsletter. Anne and Derek have already set the ball in motion
by earmarking the profits from their regular quizzes for Caritas, and the Parcent film on June 10th will also be
for the benefit of Caritas!
Bob is still waiting for ideas for how to “Twin” with Madeira U3A! We have had a very complimentary
letter from this group, after they had investigated and admired our website.
Group Co-ordinator Harry is still waiting for new members to come forward for the potential new
groups ... 10-pin bowling, Band, Bible Study, Questions on Christianity and Biking.

COMMENTS FROM LAST MONTH’S NEWSLETTER
We have received the following comment from a U3A member who has a valid point. We continue to print recom-
mendations for restaurants in our area ... but what about comments which are NOT complimentary? We are
assured that on this occasion, Ken is representing the views of all those sitting close to him, and in no way
criticizes the orga-nisers of the evening who work so hard to entertain our U3A members. In fact, he does say that
there was a high vo-lume of conversation full of excitement and anticipation!
Please remember, reading this, that we at the U3A and Newsletter are merely passing comments on to you, and
that all establishments have occasional surprising “off days” (often through no fault of their own!). It’s a good
idea, wha-tever review you are reading, to keep minds good and open!!

No, I haven't decided to write a review!
But, I would like to comment upon the glowing report for the Venta Roja, given in the Article concerning the
Musical Evening. Similar words were spoken at the end of the evening in question!
The restaurant kept the number of customers to 50 and we all chose our menu weeks in advance. On the night, the
tapas and wine came in "dribs and drabs", but that was not a problem, as the volume of conver-sation indicated the
excitement and anticipation of all the U3A Members present.
However, the main course was a disaster! The beef option was served first, so if you were lucky enough to have
chosen "beef with herbs" you got your meal pretty quickly. I ordered the beef, which was not particularly
appetizing and was luke-warm at best.
My wife Gillian ordered the fish, which arrived just as I was finishing my meal. I couldn't have waited as my food
would have been stone-cold, had I done so! Gillian's fish was over-cooked and full of bones and, again, barely
warm!
Three members of staff were bringing the plates of food and by carrying not more than 3 or 4 plates each, added to
the time taken for all customers to be served. Not enough wine was put out, so that it was not easy to get your 1/2
bottle per person!
So, all in all, I could not recommend the Venta Roja.

What a lovely evening we had at Venta Roja. The music by our own guitar group was excellent, and perso-nally I
thought that both the food and service complimented the evening. 50 members attended this event and to expect
everyone to be served at the same time is just not practical. The waiting staff wor-ked extremely hard to make this
evening successful and the only negative item was dealt with quickly and efficiently. Could one ask for more?
If things are not right or members are unhappy, then we encourage them to let the organisers know. This helps us
with future planning of events. I have personally been to Venta Roja on a number of occa-sions and have always
found them helpful and willing to please.
Venta Roja, is certainly a restaurant that I would recommend , where you receive good food and service, all at a
reasonable price.

Just wanted to say thank you for the bottle of wine for the night at Venta Roja. It was greatly appreciated. I

Many of you might know that the leader of the Casual Choir has had to step down because of ill health. We are desperate for someone to take on this role. The members love to sing and we need someone who can play keyboard and put us through our paces. If you think you could HELP

Valley voices, led by Aileen Lightfoot, were in very
good voice for their first concert before an almost
full house at the Casa de Cultura in Calpe. They
were joined by the accomplished Big Fish Rock
Choir and the programme featured both choirs
separately and together led by Suzanne Millington
and Aileen Lightfoot
Over 500 euros were raised during the evening for
the friends of the children of Emaus.
There was some very good feedback after a
successful evening and the choir celebrated with a
few glasses of vino. They look forward to taking up their next invitation to sing at the Llíber
fayre on 29th June.
Thanks to all those who supported us and especially to the president and his wife who changed
their plans at the last minute to come and see us

The wife has been missing a week now. Police said to prepare
for the worst. So I have been to the charity shop to get all her clothes back.
There’s such a lot to do in our area -
no need to stay in and get mouldy and oldy !
The U3A website has always got plenty of “Upcoming
Events”, so go there, hover your mouse over the event you
see and get more details. The “TCP” are the Travel and
Culture People of the U3A who work voluntarily throughout
the year to bring you a wide variety of things to do.

EVENTS ROM THE U3A WEBSITE
NEW VENUE FOR THE MONTHLY GENERAL MEETINGS. Following the success of the previous meetings, we will be continuing to use the Pensionista’s building in Jalón, where
we have more room for our growing membership. There will be refreshments afterwards, so after listening to the spea-
ker, we can all socialise together. The collecting box for Caritas will be there as usual, so don’t forget to bring anything
from your cupboards which local desperate families would appreciate - non-perishable food, toiletries, etc..

Monday 10th June, starts
7.15 - "Skyfall" - the latest
Bond movie, and by far the
best of recent years, with a
great story, some
wonderful actors, and terrific locations and
action. We'll be asking for a €2 donation for this
film, and proceeds will go to buy food and other
essentials for CARITAS, which helps needy
people in the Jalon valley.
If you come dressed as a debonair Bond,
and evil Bond villain, or a glamourous
Bond girl, you may win a prize!
Monday 24th June, starts 7.15 - "Burn After
Reading". For our last film of the season, we've
chosen a hilarious comedy thriller with a terrific
cast including George Clooney, Frances McDor-
mand, Brad Pitt and John Malkovitch. A pair of
gym employees find a disc containing confiden-
tial data, and try to blackmail the CIA with it to
make some quick cash. Not surprisingly, things
don't go according to plan.

Alcalali has two museums open every Saturday from
11am to1pm . Special visits can be arranged for
groups. E-mail [email protected]
The cost for visiting both museums is only 2 euros. Money collec-
ted goes into the Alcalali Pensionisters fund.
What can you see at these museums? 1) The Tower Museum (in the square). Enclosed viewing area at
the top of the tower. PLUS four levels, reached via lift, sho-
wing historical facts about Alcalali and the surrounding area.
2) Museo Etnologico/Olive & Grape Mill (near to the entrance
off the CV 720 into Alcalali). A video showing the production of
olive oil and the pressing of grapes. One is able to view the actual
equipment used during manufacture.
This particular museum was, until 1997/8, producing olive oil and
grape juice for the local inhabitants. - Mike Broadley
