Hurricane Sandy Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic storm on record reached New York City on October 29th bringing floods to streets tunnels, and subway lines and power out-ages. Through October 22, 2012 and October 31, 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated and destroyed homes and people with severe flooding and high winds of 110 mph that af-fected 24 states in most of the eastern United States and seven countries. It was pro-jected to reach $50 billion dollars in damage, meaning it could be one of the most expen-sive natural disasters in U.S. history. After leaving a destructive path across the Caribbean, Hurricane Sandy caused damage along the East Coast. Hurricane Sandy made landfall in southern New Jersey and brought travel disruption, major flooding, structural damage, and power outages. New York City was especially hard hit. The storm system was so large −-- nearly 1,000 miles wide at times -- it brought blizzard conditions to West Virginia and 20 foot waves to Lake Michigan. To date, the storm has claimed 131 lives. Flooding forced the closure of all three of the major airports in the area, LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty. In New York, a nearly 14-foot tide was recorded, smashing a record set by 1960's Hurricane Donna by more than 3 feet. The city had al-ready halted service on its bus and train lines, closing schools and ordering about 400,000 people out of their homes in low-lying areas of Manhattan and elsewhere. Wa-ter surged into subway stations in Lower Manhattan and into the tunnel connecting Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, while high winds damaged a crane perched atop a Midtown skyscraper under construction, forcing people to evacuate the surrounding area. Thankfully, many organizations have contributed to the hurricane relief effort to help those in need. ABC and Disney raised a total of $17 million on their television stations for the American Red Cross on a "Day of Giving" on Monday, November 5th. NBC raised $23 million during their Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together telethon and News Corpo-ration donated $1 million to relief efforts in the New York metropolitan area. You can help too! If you aren't able to personally provide shelter and supplies to those affected by Hurricane Sandy, it doesn't mean you can't help at all. There are many or-ganizations along the East Coast that are providing shelter, food and supplies to the vic-tims of Hurricane Sandy. The Salvation Army has dozens of mobile feeding units and shelters along the East Coast that are working to serve thousands in the most heavily hit areas. Visit www.salvationarmyusa.org to donate. Another way to help is by donating to the Red Cross. All donations will provide shelter, food, supplies, and other assistance to those affected by the hurricane. To donate please visit www.redcross.org, call 800-Red-Cross or text the word "Redcross" to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

    The Morning of Christmas Day

It'll be Christmas in the morning, it'll be Christmas

in the morning, Snow is on the ground, it'll still be there

when Christmas comes around, It'll be Christmas in the morning, it'll be Christmas

in the morning, Christmas is a wonderful time,

bright lights on the Christmas tree, I just love the way they shine-

It'll be Christmas in the morning, It'll be Christmas in the morning-

The snow is on the ground and I know its gonna stay, it'll still be there the morning of Christmas day.

    What’s Christmas?

Christmas isn’t about toys Christmas isn’t about money

Christmas is about giving food to the needy Christmas is about loving your family

Christmas is to get time to spend with your family

What’s Christmas Christmas is about the holiday

Christmas is about loving what you get Christmas isn’t about sending cards

    Christmas is about love

Interview with Colin Philips By: Austin Jasso- Nelson

Q: Which grade are you in? A: I am in sixth grade.

Q: What award did you recently receive? A: I recently received the Family Member of the Quarter Award.

Q: How did you get the Family Member of the Quarter Award?

A: I was helping around the Air Force base picking up trash, and helping clean up my dad’s squadron. Also, we started working on a break room for his troops, and I’ve helped every day that I could. One time my scout troop went on the base, and my friends were asking me if I could show them around, so I showed them everything I could, and that is mostly how I got the award.

Q: How did you feel when you received the award?

A: I felt kind of scared and nervous because I never received the award before.

Q: About how much times have you helped your dad?

A: I have helped him at least twenty- five times.

    Liar and Spy By-Rebecca Stead

Book level- 3.8 Points- 5 points Words- 38,293

Summary- When a seventh grader, Georges, moves to a Brooklyn apartment building, he meets a boy named Safer, a twelve-year-old coffee- drinking loner and spy. Georges is happy that he has Safer to hang out with, because lately things haven’t been so easy at home: his dad lost his job, and his mom has started working extra shifts at the hospital. Life is worse at school, where Georges is the new target of Dallas, who is always on the lookout for other kids’ weak spots (so he knows exactly where to hit them). Georges becomes Safer’s first spy recruit. You’re wondering what his assignment is? Tracking the mysterious Mr. X, who lives in the apartment upstairs. But as Safer becomes more demanding, he finds out everything. Reflection- Overall, I would have to say I absolutely loved this book!! I would rate it 9 out of 10 stars because it was so entertaining. I read this book in 2 days, not setting the book down. Recommendation- I would recommend this book to 4th- 6th graders. It does consists of spies and bad guys with a blend of excitement and adventure. I hope you read this book, Liar and Spy.
