July 2017 Newsletter Vol. 90 - Issue 7
Please send any articles, news, schedules, calendar dates, suggestions or photos to: John Drebenstedt, 11669 Azbury Blvd, Roanoke, IN 46783 or email [email protected] The next monthly
newsletter deadline is Thursday, July 20th. The monthly newsletter is delivered via email. If you’d like your newsletter delivered via snail mail, let John or the Sport Club know.
President’s Corner Thank you to everyone who helped with Germanfest!
Whether it was setting up, tearing down, making potato salad,
volunteering to work Hofbräu Night or at the festival itself, we
could not have pulled off another successful event without your
help.
Next on the agenda is our July 8th
Clean-Up Day. There is
plenty of work to do as we prepare for the Midwest Tournament
of Champions, which will be July 29th
& 30th
. With a good
turnout, the chores should not take long, but we could use your
help.
We will also need volunteers for the TOC event, which could
bring as many as 600 guests to our facility. If you are free that
weekend and would like to help, please contact me. We can use
Field Marshalls and kitchen help.
In addition to these endeavors, we hope to attract new
members and promote other events including other soccer
tournaments and the Mike Clark soccer camp.
The recreational leagues are in full swing on Monday and
Wednesday evenings, the Men’s competitive team is playing
games. There is also home-made food available for purchase on
Mondays and Wednesdays, serving up sandwiches, wings and a
salad or two.
As members of the Club, we could really use your help in all
of these matters. Our members are the lifeblood of our Club. If
you have any recommendations, please contact me with your
ideas. As always, I welcome your thoughts. Dan Kruse
Have a Great
4th of July!
2017 Tournament of Champions
The Sport Club has been chosen once again to be the host of
the Tournament of Champions (TOC) on July 29th
& 30th
. The
USASA competition will again bring the highest level of play to
the area. The 2017 Midwest Region II Tournament of
Champions will have several divisions including: open, over-30
and under-23.
Ladies Auxiliary Happy Summer! It is always a good feeling when the warmest
season moves in and we can enjoy colorful and beautiful
blooming flowers and take part in outside activities!
Thank you so much to all of the ladies who came to the Sport
Club to make potato salad! Also, a huge ‘thank you’ to all who
volunteered and worked during Germanfest! You are all greatly
appreciated! We would not be able to do this each and every year
without the help of our loyal members as well as their families
and friends. Enjoy a wonderful 4th
of July.
Our July meeting will be on July 7th
. The ‘Lady in the Kitchen’
for July is Sigi Gelling! Please bring your ideas to the July
meeting!
I am looking forward to seeing you all soon. Judy Diettrich
This year's Germanfest was another great event! The final
accounting is not yet available at this time, but it is anticipated to
be a success for each affiliated Club. We continue to be blessed
with teamwork and good efforts by all affiliated Clubs.
The Sport Club was well represented each day of the festival
and can be proud of the efforts we contributed to Germanfest.
Hofbräu Night at the Club was well organized and attended. A
special "Thank You" goes out to the Club Trustees, Recreational
Soccer Director Chris Csisko and the Ladies Auxiliary for their
continued efforts in showcasing our Club to the community.

Youth Soccer News
June was a busy month for the Youth side. The 18U Boys Blitz
won the Indiana Presidents cup and moved on to compete at the
Region II Presidents Cup Championship in Kansas City, where
they went 0-3 in close matches. While the results weren’t what
we had hoped for in Kansas City, the boys were competitive and
enjoyed the experience. Congratulations on a great season!
Tryouts/player placements were held in early June over four
days. More than 525 players (11U – 19U) attended the
evaluations. Teams are almost complete, but there are still some
spots available. If you are interested in playing during the 2017-
2018 season, please contact Director of Coaching, Greg Mauch,
at [email protected] .
Rec league and TOPSoccer have started their summer
programs with combined 300+ youth playing every week for the
next 6 weeks, ending in July. Not only do the players get their
start in the rec league, but the coaches as well. Several of our
coaches are current and former players beginning their coaching
career under the guidance of Matt Hein and Carlos Cruz.
Make sure to join and share with us on Facebook at
www.facebook.com/FortWayneSportClub .
The 2017 Major League Soccer season is now underway.
Make sure to follow our regional teams closely and even try to
plan on attending a Columbus Crew or Chicago Fire home game
this year. Here are some opportunities to see them this month:
Saturday, July 1st:
Chicago Fire vs. Vancouver Whitecaps @ Toyota Park.
Columbus Crew vs. Atlanta United FC @ MAPFRE Stadium
Monday, July 17th
:
Columbus Crew vs. Eintracht Frankfurt @ MAPFRE Stadium.
Saturday, July 22nd
:
Columbus Crew vs. Philadelphia Union @ MAPFRE Stadium.
Youth Soccer Helps Change the Game
During Youth Soccer player evaluations, guest speaker Skye
Eddy Bruce, of Changing the Game Project and
www.soccerparenting.com , delivered a great message on the
status of youth sports and what everyone can do to return the
overall focus back to the player to a packed Clubhouse.
She explained how the “adultification” of youth sports has
removed the focus on the actual youth athlete, but through a
positive approach, we can return the focus on developing youth
as players as the people that surround them. She also provided
great insight into how youth clubs are operating. Pictured below
are, from left, Carlos Cruz, Skye Eddy Bruce, Director of
Coaching Greg Mauch and Jim LaBorde.

Adult Competitive Soccer News
The 1
st Team sits atop the International League table with a 5-
0 record and a hefty goal differential: 37 goals for; 6 against.
The 1st Team traveled to Muskegon and came away
disappointed in the result. After being up 2-1 at halftime on 2
goals by Jackson Didion, the team ended up losing on an 84th
minute goal off of a deflection. The team played well and is
working hard to be ready for July, which see key League and
friendly matches including a July 7th
home match up vs. the
Coldwell Banker team and a July 15th
match in Dayton, OH, vs.
NPSL side Dayton Dynamo. The International League semi-
final, and final, will follow on July 16th
, and July 23rd
,
respectively. The Tournament of Champions will come to the
Club on July 29th
& 30th
.
Please contact Competitive Sports Director Dave Bennett at
[email protected] or 260-750-0325 for more

Fort Wayne Sport Club Summer Clean-up Day
July 8th
, 2017
9:00 A.M. to NOON
We can use everybody’s help, whether it is for a couple of hours in the morning, a couple of hours in the afternoon or all day. So bring the family, bring rakes, garden tools and bring a side dish.
The following is a list of things we would like to accomplish:
Debris clean up on the grounds.
Mulch areas of the grounds.
Maintenance on the goals.
General trash pick-up.
Weeding, pruning and trimming.
We will be serving a lunchtime meal, but will be looking for volunteers to furnish their own favorite side dish. If you have any items you would donate please contact one of the officer’s or trustees. We are fortunate to have such beautiful facilities let’s be ready to show it off this summer to all those who visit our Club. If you have questions please feel free to contact the Fort Wayne Sport Club at 260-432-6011 or Dan Kruse at [email protected] or 260-466-0831.
