About the Organist

Hatsumi Miura is resident organist for C. B. Fisk’s Opus 110 at Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall in Japan, a 2,000 seat symphonic hall with a large pipe organ installed in 1998. She has taught at the Gregorian Institute in Tokyo and has been an Associate Professor of music education at Rikkyo University in Tokyo. Currently she teaches organ at Ferris University in Yokohama, and is an organist at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Yokohama, which has an 1889 Hook & Hastings organ originally installed in Providence, RI. Ms. Miura’s early studies were with Michiko Kikuchi, Guy Bovet and Tsuguo Hirono, with whom she received her undergraduate degree at the Tokyo University of the Arts. She received the coveted Artist’s Diploma from the New England Conservatory in 1997, studying with Yuko Hayashi. During her two years in Boston she also was the assistant organist at All Saints Episcopal Church, Ashmont working with Michael Kleinschmidt. Now she is highly sought after as an organ soloist in Japan and abroad. She has twice been a featured recitalist at the National Conventions of the American Guild of Organists, and has performed twice with the Seattle Symphony. In 2003, Ms. Miura recorded her first commercial compact disc on the Loft label. This recording was made to celebrate the fifth anniversary of Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall and its organ, and showcases the many colors of the C. B. Fisk Opus 110 in a varied program. In a review of this disc, “The American Organist” magazine glowing describes Ms. Miura, “The resident artist is precisely that; she plays as a painter wields a palette, choosing and mixing colors lavishly without ever overdoing it. Under her hands, Bach, Krebs, Beethoven, Yamada, Bovet, Alain, Guilmant, and Widor come equally alive.” In November 2007 in a ceremony at the Yokohama Art Museum, the Mayor of Yokohama presented Ms. Miura a commendation and award for her contributions to Art and Music in the city. This yearly award is given to encourage those exceptional people who strive to bring art and music to the people of the city and help to bring recognition to the city of Yokohama.
