C. Reason

(1) HartzellPropellerInc.hasreceivedreportsofcorrosiononA-717guiderods.

(2) TheA-717guiderodsmanufacturedbyHartzellPropellerInc.between March1,2012andOctober22,2013mayhavebeenimproperlyprocessed. Thiscouldresultinaninsufficientlayerofchrome,makingtheguiderodsusceptible to corrosion.

(3) Excessivecorrosionmaycausetheguiderod(s)tobindintheguidecollar. Thisconditionmayresultinerraticoperationduringflightwithapotentialforaninabilitytoreachafullfeatherbladeangle.

(4) Regulatoryactionisnotexpected.

D. Description

(1) ThisAlertServiceBulletinprovidesInstructionsforContinued Airworthiness(ICA).

(2) ThisAlertServiceBulletinprovidesinstructionsforinitialandrecurringvisualinspectionsoftheA-717guiderodsontheaffectedpropellers.

(3) ThisAlertServiceBulletinprovidesinstructionsforreplacement of the piston unitontheaffectedpropellers.

(4) ReplacementoftheaffectedpistonunitisterminatingactionforthisAlertService Bulletin.

(a) ThisAlertServiceBulletinprovidesinstructionsforretiringtheaffectedpiston units from service.

(5) HartzellPropellerInc.willwarrantthecostofpartsandlabortoinspectandreplacethepistonunitontheaffectedpropellers.

(a) TheAppendixofthisAlertServiceBulletinprovidesinstructionsforpaymentoflaborchargesforthevisualinspectionandforreplacementofthepistonunitontheaffectedpropellers.





E. Compliance

(1) Propellerrepairstationsthathaveservicedanyoftheaffectedpropellermodelsorinstalledanyoftheaffectedpistonunitsand/orguiderodsshould contacttheaircraftownerimmediatelyaboutthisAlertServiceBulletin.

(2) TheoperatorshouldcontactHartzellPropellerInc.immediatelyifanyofthefollowingissuesoccurduringflight:

(a) RPMfluctuations

(b) Erratic operation

(c) Synchronizationproblems(twinengineaircraftonly)

(3) InitialvisualInspection

(a) within7daysor10flighthoursfromthedateofthisAlertServiceBulletinwhicheveroccursfirst,performavisualinspectioninaccordancewiththeAccomplishmentInstructionsinthisAlertServiceBulletin.

(4) RecurringvisualInspections

(a) Every30days,performavisualinspectioninaccordancewiththeAccomplishmentInstructionsinthisAlertServiceBulletinuntil,butnotbeyondDecember31,2014.

(5) Terminating Action

(a) ReplacementoftheaffectedpistonunitisterminatingactionforthisAlertService Bulletin.

(b) TheaffectedpistonunitmustbereplacedandretiredfromservicebeforeDecember31,2014inaccordancewiththeAccomplishmentInstructionsin this Alert Service Bulletin.

NOTE: Thiswillbeconsideredyourlaborinvoiceuponapproval.

(b) SendthecompletedformtoHartzellPropellerInc.forprocessing.

(2) HartzellPropellerInc.willreviewthecompletedformandassignawarrantyclaimnumbertoapprovedapplicants,authorizingpaymentoftheallowablelabor charge.

NOTE: Thiswarrantyclaimnumberisassignedtothepropellerserialnumberandmustbereferencedoneachwarranty-relatedformsubmittedforthatpropeller.
