Nymphs Needed! Nymphs Needed! By Christian Shane
It’s not too early to begin tying for our Joe Kline Great Fly Sale in January 2018. Last year, the chapter raised over $1,000 in fly sales from our members’ donations alone. A lot of newcomers to the sport of fly fishing attended January’s Fly Sale, and you can help this year by tying up those familiar and easy recipes.
Popular patterns are needed such as pheasant tails, hare’s ears, woolly buggers, streamers and all your tying favorites. You choose the patterns and sizes, then turn in your fly contributions at any general membership meeting through December. The chapter will package them for the sale.
Thanks to all our talented fly tyers, and of course, for our members who support our winter fundraiser.

2017 Pine Creek Stream Improvement Project2017 Pine Creek Stream Improvement Project By Tom WalshBy Tom Walsh
The 2017 PWWTU annual pine Creek stream improvement workday was held on Saturday, August 26th, 2017. We had the best turnout of volunteers ever! Six devices were installed in Pine Creek in North Park along Wildwood Road. The work was planned and supervised by the PA Fish & Boat Commission. The fund-ing was provided by Allegheny County Parks, Allegheny County Public Works and Allegheny County Conservation District. Allison Park Sportsmen' Club members provided a lot of the volunteer labor. A hand made fly rod (made by Bill Hayes) was raffled off at the event. The winner of fly rod was Kerry Uber.

Our 9th Annual W. PA Casting for Recovery Retreat August 25-26-27 at Home Waters in Spruce Creek, PA.
Each year I say, “it was our best retreat ever,” but this year I think it was! The motto of CFR is “To fish is to hope,” and the retreat is something that gives the women who attend just that. We are an all-volunteer team of 11 women (doctors, psychologists, fly fishing instructors, and organizers). We fund raise each year so wom-en at any age, and at any stage of breast cancer, can experience the sport we all love so much, fly fishing, with all expenses paid! It’s a way for them to connect with other women who are experiencing some of the same issues, and a way for them to enjoy nature and fly-fishing. It’s a labor of love for me and for the women on my team, but what makes this weekend so special are the River Helpers that come on Sunday to guide for each participant. These men, many from our TU Chapter (Peter, Bob, & Christian), have been as dedicated as an-yone could ever wish for. They have been there with us from the beginning, and we are so grate-ful for the kindness and understanding they give to each participant. Because our retreat is held the last weekend in August (off season so we can afford it), it’s usually so hot and many times it’s raining (Continued on Page 9).

This year the weather was perfect and no rain! Our morning of fishing was filled with laughter and screams of hooking into their first trout. It was a wonderful experience for all 14 breast cancer participants. This could not be accomplished without the support we get from Penn’s Woods TU, International Angler, and individuals that contribute each year by donating items for our auctions, attending our Fish Tales and Ales event, and person-al donations of money. I would personally like to thank all of you who generously give your support to our W. PA CFR organization. The attendees leave with hope and a love and understanding of being in the outdoors while learning the sport of fly-fishing.
We couldn’t do it without you!

While I can’t deny that I’ve really enjoyed writing all of the Meet The Artist pieces, I’ve got to ad-mit it’s really cool to have the chance to not only talk or email the artist, but to run into him at our Cabin Fever or elsewhere in town. That’s right, this year’s artist is based right here in Pittsburgh. Originally from Massachusetts, Ryan now calls Pittsburgh home.
CC: Tell us about your artistic vision and motivation. What keeps you painting? What do you want your art to convey?
RK: I started painting again because I needed an escape. I was going through a lot of medical issues, and I really needed that place of meditation. The place that came to mind was being on the rivers when I was a kid with my dad. The cool water pushing against my legs, the sounds of the mourning doves, and the gentle breeze whistling between the trees. I needed to be in that place, but I was stuck in a hospital room.
CC: Your painting style is very bold and colorful. But I understand your art isn’t limited to paint-ing. What else do you do?
RK: Currently I am very focused on painting and ink work. In the past I have done a little bit of everything. I was especially known for large site specific works that would take the history of the space into consideration. My materials were broad from construction materials to laser cut vinyl. I never wanted to limit myself to one method. I am definitely a constant student, always learning.
CC: I did some research before this interview. You’ve been featured in:
The AP collection: http://theapcollection.com/ap-collection/2014/6/9/ryan-keene-
Midcurrent: http://midcurrent.com/art/ryan-keene/
The Fiberglass Manifesto: http://thefiberglassmanifesto.blocom/2016/04/rakart-art-of-ryan-keene.html?m=1
And most recently in the July/ August issue of Eastern Fly Fishing Magazine. It seems your art has generated quite a bit of interest. I understand you have worked with, or are working with, a bunch of different companies. Who are you working with and where else might we see your work show up?
RK: I have done work with ECHO and Rajeff Sports, H&H Outfitters, Live4FlyFishing, Fly Punk, Enrico Puglissi, and a few other companies. Currently most of my work has been focused with a new apparel company called A.M.P. (American Made Performance). They are a small company based in Pontiac, Michigan that has developed an amazing, all US made, performance fabric. They are grown, woven, and printed in the US. Currently I have a line with them that I will be constantly changing and adding to. They also do printing for companies as well that I do design work and paintings for.
Like, if you have a fly shop and want some of my art, now I also have a company that can use that art and print up some great merchandise for you. I have to say it’s pretty amazing to have a factory at your fingertips to play with. We have a lot of fun stuff in, like shorts and tights. The possibilities keep growing.

The Great Duck Misunderstanding and Other Stories:
The Very Best of American Fishing and Hunting Humor
The Great Duck Misunderstanding by Russell Chatham is just one of the stories in this Anthology of sporting humor. You may recognize Chatham’s name as one of our country’s premier land-scape artists, but he dabbles in the literary world. His is just one of a book full of big name contributors.
Acknowledged masters such as Lewis Grizzard, Henry Beard, P.J. O’Rourke, Ed Zern, and Patrick McManus among others, will keep you smiling, laughing, and grinning throughout the book. Not all of the stories are about fishing, but cover “the widest universe of sub-jects- bird dogs to deep sea fishing to raucous duck dinners to how a guide handles a bore…”. Brian Peterson has done a tremendous job of compiling a highly enjoyable anthology of humorous sporting stories.
As fall starts getting colder, and our time spent outdoor starts to dwindle, I highly recommend putting this book on your “to read” list.
“A million candles have burned themselves out. Still I read on.” Edger Allan Poe, The Cask of Amontillado
