• The Bucket Barricade protects a lineman from weather, inadvertent contact with energized equipment, and flying debris.

• These are all very good reasons to have the Bucket Barricade at your work site. As with any new product, questions always arise as to the design.

Is the “Glass” Bullet Proof?

• While most linemen are not subjected to gun fire during the course of their work, the strength of the shield is often questioned.

• The shield is produced from Lexan which is more impact resistance than Plexiglas, which is often referred to as bullet proof.

Is the “Glass” Bullet Proof?

For the engineers, the impact resistance can be stated as:•Izod Impact Strength, Unnotched @ 0.125“ | 60 ft·lbs/in (no failure) | ASTM D256 •Instrumented Impact, 0.125“ | >46 ft·lbs | ASTM D3763 •Shear Strength @ Yield | 6,000 psi | ASTM D732

.22 Cal Test

For the rest of us, we started with a .22 cal. long rifle Winchester ammunition fired from a Ruger Mark 1 pistol with a 6 7/8 inch barrel from a distance of 15 feet.

The bullet penetrated the surface and was entrapped in the material.

It almost broke through, but not quite.

3” .410 Shotgun Test

Next up was a 3” .410 shotgun shell loaded with 000 buckshot. This was fired by a Bond Arms double barreled derringer called a “snake slayer”.

Four of the reported five balls contained in the shell marked the Lexan.

If you look really close, you can see a slight dent in the material, but certainly the snakes were saved.

We have no idea where these pellets went after hitting the board!

.45 Cal Test

Time for some real fire power. The next round fired was a .45 cal. fired from a Para-Ordnance P10-40 automat.

First, the Lexan stopped the bullet!

Well, stopped may not be the correct term, but it did not pass through.

The bulge in the back of the Lexan was almost as impressive as the final resting place for the bullet. Having bent somewhat in stopping the bullet, the Lexan promptly threw the bullet back towards its point of origin, allowing us to find it.

.357 Mag Test

Time for the magnums!

The first round of the .357 mag. fired from a S&W model 19 with a 4 inch barrel made for a quick and somewhat clean hole.

The exit wound showed some melting and some fracturing depending on your point of view.

.44 Mag Test

The .44 mag. also pierced the Lexan by a combination of melting and fracture. Not exactly bullet proof, but then not exactly ordinary bullets.

So who sold us this product and what did they expect us to do with it?

Kirk said this would protect us from accidentally contacting something behind us. If so, it needs to be good electrically. How good is it?

For the engineers, it is: Dielectric Strength, in air at 0.125" | 380 V/mil | ASTM D149

What does that mean for the user? Why doesn’t it have a voltage rating?

Product Details

When insulating properties, Lexan is so much better than air that rating the board would be based only on how far you stay away from the edge. The material will not be punctured from too much voltage.

The next slide shows two pieces of metal foil are placed on each side of the Lexan and energized to 80kV. Corona from the corners along with streamers surrounding the electrodes on each side can be seen as a faint blue arc. The lights were off to make the photo more visible.
