Here, you will witness the timeless beauty of Sicily, where echoes of ancient civilizations stillremain in the streets of this coastal city. Siracusa (Syracuse) is a window into the rich historyand culture of the Mediterranean and Europe. It is home to a vast archeological site, situatedon the edge of the city, which offers a rare treasure of temples, amphitheatres and an ancientcastle. A journey to this corner of Sicily transports visitors across the threshold of time intothousands of years ago.

Ortygia, Syracuse's island heart, is well-known for its labyrinth of ancient and medieval streets, making sightseeing on foot a joy. You will also find charming trattorias, pizzerias, and seafoodrestaurants on the narrow streets away from the largest squares. Page 10 of 22Welcome to Agrigento!

Agrigento is easily accessible by road from all of Sicily's main towns. The SS189 and SS121connect with Palermo, while the SS115 runs along the coast to Sciacca and Licata. For Ennaor Catania, take the SS640 via Caltanissetta.

Located on the Southern coast of Sicily, in Italy, you can find a land of sun and agriculturecalled Agrigento. Its establishment took place around 582-580 BC and it is attributed toGreek colonists who named it Akragas, their influence and architecture is noticeable throughall the place. Well known for its magnificent Greek ruins, you will find the "Templo dellaConcordia", one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the word. There are two nearbyrivers, the Hypsas and the Akragas.

You will surely enjoy eating in a typical Italian restaurant, in a little cafe, or in a trendy enotecain a pretty piazza. You can find some fashionable restaurants and pubs at "Viale della vittoria"or at Atenea street.

The main walking street in Agento is called Via Tenea and you will find shops there; Agrigentois known for its trendy boutiques, antique shops. Moreover, every Friday there is a big marketgoing on in the morning.

You will admire and learn tomorrow with your guide the Greek contribution of the ancientcolonists in the well known "The Valley of Temples" where you will find five Greek temples, divided into two zones: Eastern and Western zone and expand your knowledge in the "MuseoRegionale Archeologico".

You could also take a walk through the old center of Agrigento, you will find a range of smallshops in Via Atena, the large cathedral in Via Duomo and also the Norman church "Chlesa dlSanta Maria del Grecl".

Agrigento has a warm temperature climate throughout the year with hot dry summers. Theaverage high and low temperatures are 26°C and 11°C respectively.

In town, via Atenea, the main street in the historic center, is closed to traffic from 9am to 8pm,with a short break during lunchtime when cars can pass through the center (for loadingluggage). Parking can be a nightmare in Agrigento. There's metered parking at PiazzaVittorio Emanuele and on the streets around Piazzale Aldo Moro, although you'll have to arriveearly to find a space. Enjoy!

Page 15 of 22WELCOME TO CALTAGIRONE!

Caltagirone is considered to be the ceramics capital of Sicily. It is picturesquely situated onthree hills in the south-western part of the province of Catania. The medieval old town wasdestroyed in 1693 by an earthquake and rebuilt in the Baroque style. In the city, there are stillmore than 80 ceramic workshops - some of them can be visited. The ceramic products canbe purchased in countless souvenir shops of course.

Attractions in Caltagirone

In the main square, the Piazza Umberto I, you can see the cathedral from the 18th Century andthe Palazzo Capitaniale Corte, which dates from the 16th Century. It was built by GianDomenico Gagini and is a single-storey building with Doric pilasters. Along the Via Duomayou will reach the Piazza del Municipio with the Baroque City Hall and the modern Galleria L.Struzo, which is named after the founding father of the Christian Democracy party. About 300metres west along the Corso Vittorio Emanuele there is the church of San Giacomo -originally a Norman temple, which was replaced by the three-nave church after the earthquakein 1693. In the Museo Civico, which is located in the old Bourbon prison, you can learn moreabout the local history of Caltagirone.

Over a bridge, decorated with ceramics, you will reach the Church of San Francesco diPaola. It is located at the entrance to the city park where you will also find the interestingMuseum of Ceramics.

The Scala of Caltagirone

Undoubtedly, the highlight of Caltagirone is the famous Scala, a ceramic staircase, leadingfrom the Piazza del Municipio into the Upper Town. It was designed by Giuseppe Giacalone in1608. 142 ceramic tile steps decorated in the modern style lead up to the church Santa Mariadel Monte, from where you have a magnificent view of Caltagirone. The church was alsorebuilt after the earthquake in 1693 - inside there is a picture of the Madonna di Conadominifrom the 13th Century. You need to see the staircase especially on special occasions when itis decorated very beautifully.
