Indian Grandm
aster (GM
) Deep Sengupta
is returning to Hastings to defend the ‘title’ he
won last year. H
e has had many successes in his career including the W
orld Youth C
hampi-
onship in 2000 and the Com
monw
ealth Cham
pionship, held in Glasgow
, in 2014. He has
travelled all over the world pursuing his chess career and is a regular at B
ritish tournaments.
He first w
on at Hastings in 2010/11 w
hen he finished ahead of his good friend IMA
rghyadip Das on tie break. A
rghyadipis also playing again at H
astings this year.
This year’s top seed is M
axim T
urovw
ho is making his H
astings debut. Indeed the Russian
GM
has not played in Britain before. H
e has had a number of tournam
ent successes including tw
ice winning the D
utch Open. H
e has won O
pen tournaments in locations as
diverse as Tashkent, Chennai, N
ordhausen (Germ
any) and Eforie (R
omania). H
e has alsow
on the Oslo International G
M tournam
ent.
Returning to H
astings after missing last year is G
M Jahongir V
akhidovfrom
Uzbekistan.
Jahongir first won H
astings in 2013/14 whilst still an International M
aster (IM). H
e won
here again in 2015/16. He qualified for the W
orld Cup this year but w
as knocked out byPeter S
vidler. Can Jahongir continue his run of w
inning the Masters in alternate years?
Former B
razilian champion G
M A
lexandr Fier
makes a return appearance. H
e has won 5
Gold m
edals at the Pan Am
erican Youth C
hess Festival and is a three time w
inner of theS
outh Am
erican Junior Cham
pion. He has also w
on the Latin A
merican C
up. He has
qualified for the World C
up on two occasions. H
e is married to W
omen G
rand Master
Nino M
aisuradze. Nino has represented France in a num
ber of Olym
piads and is a former
French Cham
pion. She too is com
peting at Hastings.
Bogdan L
alicis a C
roatian GM
who spends a great deal of tim
e in England. H
e is a successful author and has had tournam
ent victories in Pleven, S
arajevo and Cesnatico.
Keith A
rkellis a former E
uropean Seniors C
hampion w
ho lost out on tie-break for theW
orld Senior (50+
) title. He has also been E
nglish Cham
pion. Keith is a regular on the
British C
ongress circuit. A hardened veteran K
eith arrived in Dundee for an invitational
event this year at 3am. H
e proceeded to win the B
litz event which took place that sam
em
orning!
Another congress regular is M
ark Hebden
. Mark’s tournam
ent successes include sevenB
ritish Rapidplay titles and four C
appelle-la-Grande successes. M
ark is a former w
innerof the H
astings tournament, sharing first place in 2009/10.
Another new
comer is the C
hinese IM L
ou Yiping. H
e has also competed in the W
orldC
up, losing to Gata K
amsky in 2013.
Yet another first tim
e competitor is Jens K
ristiansen. H
e is a former W
orld Senior
Cham
pion and three times D
anish Cham
pion
There are tw
o Scottish IM
s playing, Stephen Mannion
and Andy M
uir. Both play for
Paisley Chess C
lub which w
on the Glasgow
League this season. A
nother mem
ber of thatsuccessful team
is one of the arbiters officiating. (It shouldn't be too hard to guess which
one.)
Sadly, one of our regular IM
s will be m
issing this year. It is with great regret w

Vladim
