Narrative Report (limit to 500 words)
The focus of my research has largely been centered upon developing methods of neuromodulation as
potential treatment tools as well investigating their mechanisms and impact on brain plasticity. The
majority of my effort is dedicated to research, teaching, mentoring and administrative activities to run my
laboratory.
I have conducted several clinical trials and also mechanistic studies investigating the effects of
noninvasive neuromodulatory tools in neuropsychiatry. Some of these studies are highly cited studies and
have a significant impact on the field of neuromodulation such as my work in Parkinson’s disease in
which we investigated the impact of neuromodulation on motor function, mood and cognition; also
assessing the neural correlates using neuroimaging (SPECT). Another important area is my work in
chronic pain. We were the first to publish a trial investigating the impact of transcranial direct current
stimulation for chronic pain in spinal cord injury. This study received an award as the top 10 most cited
paper in the period of 2006-2008 in the journal PAIN (the highest impact in the field of pain). In addition,
this and my other studies in this field have led to successful grant applications (two NIH R21 grants).
Along the same lines, some of my studies in stroke using methods of neuromodulation resulted also in
important contributions to the field, as other research laboratories are now interested and conducting
research in this area, using the approach I developed of balancing bi-hemispheric activity with brain
stimulation.
I have also been conducting studies using animal models in collaboration with other laboratories. We have
been exploring the effects of rTMS, repetitive electrical stimulation and tDCS on the brain, measuring
several outcomes including invasive EEG recordings, cortical spreading depression and assessment of
LTD/LTP in animal slices.
Besides my research efforts, I have been actively involved in teaching. I have focused my efforts in two
major areas: Neuromodulation and clinical research methodology. In Neuromodulation, I have organized
and chaired 4 international symposiums. The most recent was a large International Symposium, in which
10 renowned speakers and faculty members from Europe and US met in Sao Paulo, Brazil for a 4-day
44
meeting (there was 400 participants in this symposium). Also, in the area of clinical research
methodology, I have created a 6-month distance and collaborative learning course in clinical research
with several colleagues. This is a large international HMS course (with an average of 120 students). The
goal is to train clinical researchers across the world. We developed a highly interactive and collaborative
learning method (it can be seen in www.clinicalresearchlearning.org) including also the case teaching
method.
In conclusion, this report can be summarized by the mission of the laboratory I direct (Laboratory of
Neuromodulation & Clinical Research Learning Center) that is to investigate the main techniques of
neuromodulation including their mechanisms of action in neurology and rehabilitation. In addition my
laboratory is an active center for training in neuromodulation and clinical research, offering several
training programs. The ultimate goal is to develop novel clinical tools using noninvasive brain
stimulation.
