Monday, October 24PALERMO / MONREALE

Dock this morning in Palermo,

the capital of Sicily. Visit the

9th-century Palatine Chapel in

the Palace of the Norman Kings.

Described by Guy de Maupassant

as “the most surprising religious

jewel ever dreamt of,” the chapel

is known for its extraordinary

Norman-Byzantine mosaics.

Done in a realistic style, the

mosaics have a vivid depth of

color achieved with gold and

silver background tiles. After

lunch on board, drive to Monreale

to discover the magnificent

Norman cathedral, whose interior

is covered with glorious mosaics

depicting scenes from the Old

and New Testaments. Return to

the ship in time for dinner.

Tuesday, October 25TRAPANI / SEGESTA

Step ashore at the port of

Trapani for an excursion to

Segesta to view its splendid

Greek temple and theater.

After lunch on board, you may

wish to travel to the medieval

hilltop town of Erice. Or you may

choose to journey to the village

of Mazara del Vallo to see its

spectacular seven-foot bronze

statue, only recently retrieved

from the sea by local fishermen.

With his flying hair and goat

ears, the 2,400-year-old figure

was quickly dubbed the Dancing

Satyr. Later this afternoon Sea

Cloud II sails along the northern

coast of Sicily.

Wednesday, October 26PORTO EMPEDOCLE / AGRIGENTO

Dock in Porto Empedocle for a

morning excursion to Agrigento,

which Pindar called “the most

beautiful city built by mortal

men.” Tour the Valley of the

Temples, with some of the

finest Greek ruins in the world.

Built in the 5th century B.C.E.,

the Temple of Concordia is one

of the best preserved. Return

to the ship for lunch and a

leisurely afternoon under sail.

From Pozzallo, known for its

beautiful beaches, a short drive

takes you to the 4th-century

Villa del Tellaro, where artful

mosaics depict hunting scenes

and the story of Hector. Continue

to the lovely town of Noto, set

amid olive groves and almond

trees on a plateau overlooking

the Asinaro Valley. A walking

tour will introduce you to the

town’s baroque treasures,

including the Palazzo Nicolaci,

whose fabulous interiors rival its

wrought-iron balconies supported

by carved figures. Return to Sea

Cloud II in time for a late lunch.

Friday, October 28SYRACUSE

In Syracuse, discover the well-

preserved Greek and Roman

theaters in the Archaeological

Zone. On beautiful Ortygia

Island, see the cathedral built

on the ruins of the Temple of

Athena and Antonello da

Messina’s newly restored The

Annunciation in Museo Bellomo.

By special invitation you will

visit the baroque palazzo of

Barone Beneventano for a tour

and a reception. Celebrate a
