Thursday 5th June at 7pm; Friday 6th June at 1pm; Saturday 7th June at 7pmFollow the Herring is a co-production by The Customs House and Guild of Lillians.
Written Ann CoburnVocal score by Karen Wimhurst
Follow the Herring is a unique nationaltouring project which combines theatre anda visual arts project.
‘Get Up & Tie Your Fingers’ is a piece oftheatre based on the 1881 EyemouthFishing Disaster, the worst to ever hit Britain.
The art project welcomes a knitted boat toHartlepool. You can get involved in creatinga unique community exhibition.
Together they form Follow The Herring.
During the 19th century, women fromfishing communities along the east coast ofScotland and England, known as the‘herring lassies’, would follow the herringfishing fleets down the east coast to meetthe catch at each port. With knives at the
ready and strips of cloths tied around theirthumbs and forefingers, they gutted, salted, and barrelled the bountiful herring that weredestined for markets across the world.
Echoing their journey, through captivatingstorytelling and atmospheric song, Followthe Herring as a project takes this tale backto the communities from which it sprang;and gives them the opportunity to participatein something quite extraordinary.
Focusing on a shared maritime heritage thisproject offers people the chance to share aspecial journey with us.
