Fall and winter can be tough onyour home and your wallet. As temper-atures drop, chances are your furnacewill be working overtime. This results intwo things - greater energy consump-tion and higher heating bills.
Try these easy DIY projects to helpcut down on energy loss and expenses:
1. Replace worn weather-strippingaround doors and windows. Wornweather-stripping can create drafts andlet heated air out, stressing your fur-nace and compromising your comfort.
Replacing it takes little time and is alow-cost, high-impact solution.
2. Top up or replace old insulation inyour attic. A poorly insulated attic is aprimary source of energy loss. Also, over time, some types of insulation cansettle and compact, allowing heat toescape through gaps. Experts recom-mend topping up or replacing atticinsulation with a dimensionally stablebatt insulation like Roxul Comfortbatt.Aim for an R-value of at least R-50 or adepth of roughly 16 inches.
3. Insulate basement headers andwalls. Uninsulated basement headersare common, especially in older homes. They can act as a gateway for heated airto escape. Fixing the problem is fast andeasy. Simply cut Comfortbatt mineralwool insulation to fit the cavity andcompress into place. Doing thisthroughout your basement will preventheat loss and can potentially save hun-dreds of dollars each year.
4. Caulk around windows. Cracks andcrevices are a source of heat loss. They
can also be an entry poiwater/moisture, as well as forcome insects. Preventative nance, such as caulking, can ienergy efficiency and preventrepairs.
5. Change your furnace filteit a point to check your furnacmonthly, always changing it wdirty. This will improve the perfoand efficiency of your furnaceyou money.

Paneling is a low-cost way to coverproblem walls. In the 1960s and 1970s,paneling was very popular. Sold in largepanels, paneling was relatively easy tohang, and quickly became a staple of dens and finished basements.
But few of today's homeowners are
enamored with the look of faux woodpaneling. Those who purchase homesthat have paneling on the walls oftensearch for ways to transform the look of rooms in which the walls are covered inpaneling. While paneling does go upquickly, removing it may not be as sim-
ple. Explore these options for givingpaneled walls a new look.
Paint over the panelingThe fastest way to breathe new life
into a paneled room is to paint over thepaneling. The texture of the panelingwill show from beneath, giving the roomappeal without the dark hue of thewood or veneer panels. Consult with apaint store or home improvement centerto determine the most effective way tocover up paneling with paint.Sometimes it is wise to lightly scuff thepaneling with a fine-grit sandpaper sothat the paint will adhere. Shiny orglossed paneling can be dulled with ade-glossing product. Sometimes a com-
bination of a thick primer and color willgrip the paneling and reduce the num-ber of coats needed to cover it. Also, invest in a high-quality, professional-grade paint. It may cost a bit more, butsuch paint will be well worth it when itglides over the paneling, covering itcompletely. If you don't want thegrooves showing between the panels, fillthem in with spackle and sand down tocreate a smooth surface before painting.
Cover the panelingCovering up the paneling is another
tactic. Rather than coating the wall inpaint, consider a wallpaper liner. Linersare essentially a thick, plain wallpaperthat is applied on top of the paneling orused when dealing with damaged walls.
In lieu of tearing down the walls andputting up new drywall, the liner willcover imperfections. Many of theseproducts can be painted directly andmay not require priming beforehand. This can be great for homeowners whosegoal is to cover paneling quickly andeasily.
Those who prefer a patternon the walls can opt to cover pwith a printed wallpaper. Hdepending on the thickness of tpaper, this may be a two-step You may need to fill in the between the panels first, or firsthick wallpaper liner to create less surface.
Cut the panelingIf you desire a cottage or
look in a room, remove half of teling, leaving the bottom portionThen place molding or a chair rayou made your cut, creating a wing effect. The top portion of tcan be painted, while the bott
tion can be left as the wood painted a complementary color.
Remove the panelingThe most labor-intensive way
a paneled room a new look is tothe paneling. Pry at a portionpaneling in an inconspicuous sporoom to determine which methused to install the paneling. Somple only tack it into place withfinishing nails, while others gpaneling to the wall for a securelation. Glue will be much more to remove and could further damwalls and paneling in the procespaneling is too difficult to remoering or painting it may be a option. Small nails can be remo
pulling at the panels. Spacklbefore painting over the walls.
Paneling is an inexpensive ing option that was first populayears ago. Though less populapaneling still shows up in homcan be remedied with some reeasy tips.
