The West Bend Police and Fireepartments were called to the 400 block

N. 8th Avenue for the report of a fireside a single family, two-story residence at0:58 a.m. July 7.

The four family members who wereside the residence when the fire startedere able to get out of the house safely andthout injury prior to the arrival of emer-

gency responders. West Bend FireDepartment personnel were able to extin-guish the fire quickly; however the home wasseverely damaged.

The initial damage estimate is in excessof $50,000. The family is being assisted bythe Red Cross. A child playing with matcheswas determined to have caused the fire.

Plot your pathDetermine beforehand the intent of the

ath to direct visitors to and from theouse, to allow visitors easy access to thearden, to highlight a particular feature,c. Primary paths need to be wide and

fairly straight to permit more than one visi-tor on them at a time. Secondary pathsmay be narrower and involve more twistsand turns.

Pick your materialsAgain, the purpose of the path plays a

large part in the materials used. Primarypaths should be made from materials thatcan be set firmly in place and provide aneven surface, such as stone or brick.Secondary paths can call for softer sur-faces like turf or mulches. You can mixmaterials for interest if you wish. Just makesure whatever you choose complementsyour landscape. Classic red brick might

look out of place in a rustic garden, where-as stone and mulch might not.

Prep and place the materialsYou cant just throw down some step-

ping stones and be done with it. The sur-face needs to be even, safe and easy towalk on, so prep the site accordingly.Improve the drainage, level the coursewith sand and then lay the material.Research the materials you plan to use andknow how to install them properly. Takeadditional measures for stability, like creat-ing edges to keep pavers, stones and brickin place. Consider installing lighting, par-ticularly if the path will be used at night.

Perk up the pathWhen you have finishe

the path, try it out. See foeasy it is to traverse. Madjustments are needed fthen look at the path from apoint. Is it eye catching? Dand maintain your interestcould add to the ambiance ing, plants and statuary.
