Mortrack

With an average time of 1.75 seconds per brick, compared to 8.8 seconds for conventional point-ing methods, a Mortrack gives the user a 500% speed increase against applying mortar by trowel.

FastIndividual mortar components - water, cement, sand - can be added to the device and mixed before being applied to the joint.

PrototypedA working mechanical proto-type was created for proof of concept.

Hand-held Mortar Extruder

The Mortrack hand-held mortar extruder enables rapid, accurate pointing while removing the need for plasticisersand perfect mix ratios., reducing material waste, time and skilled labour.

PreciseThe device is able to accurately apply mortar to joints of varying depths and widths. The nozzle can be removed and replaced with one more suitably sized, depending on the task.

This concept was shortlisted for the Travis Perkins Innovation Awards The reduction in waste and time makes this a highly sustainable solution

Comfortable

Adjustable

EasyThe patient or practitioner is able to scan the patient's face to create a detailed surface model.

A butterfly valve, built into the main mask body, allows the user to adjust the air pressure in the hollow contour part. This aspect turns the contour into an adjustable air-cushion.

RapidRapnoea was a conceptual project , with the briefset to redesign a functional product that incorporateda customisable and replacable part, improvingperformance.

The custom-fit contour is 3D-printed in a matter of hours, meaning the sufferer can integrate the product into their lives on the day of their diagnosis.

Rapnoea3D Printed Custom Sleep Apnoea Mask

A contour is defined by the surface model to create a perfect fit for the patient. They can then sleep in far greater comfort than with conventional CPAP masks.

QualityThe quality of the design, materials and processes used is manifested in the quality of sleep the user can now experience. No pain is caused by overtightening or hardmaterials.

This project had a 9 day deadline. The time was spent researching sleep apnoea to redesign the face mask

Bradley Forge

Cutlery

Garden Furniture

After being inspired to explore the properties of hot steel, I designed and built a coal forge capable of producing temperatures between approximately 400C and 1,900C. I set up a small business, Bradley Forge, at home in Northumberland.

Metalwork and Garden Furniture Design

I have designed and made bespoke steel cutlery, by first forging and then fettling and finishing by hand.

I have made commissioned steel plant supports for gardens. By using CAD to create virtual prototypes that enable perfect fits for large, nonuniform plants, I can use software to calculate volumes of steel and costings to minimise waste.

The purpose of the forge is to allow me to experiment witn different materials and create artistic and functional furniture and tools.

My designs respect and absorb traditional influences, whilst integrating modern aspects.

MicroelectronicsFrom Automated Control to Handling Data

By programing an Arduino to take analogue inputs, I was able to calibrate and control the Mortrack's DC motor using relays and PWM .

I designed and fabricated an automated can-crusher, capable of counting and calculating the force required to crush each can. The software was prototyped virtually in MPLAB, followed by the elctronic hardware builds using an FPGA and PCB-mounted PIC microcontroller.

Software

Hardware

I was given the opportunity to learn to integrate microelectronics into many of the projects I was tasked with during my period of education at Loughborough design school. I was confident in using and building on this knowledge during my year's work placement, as well as in personal projects. I am proficient in coding in C and Arduino and using a variety of microcontrollers.

I learnt to program microcontrollers using C for PIC and the Arduino language. MPLAB IDE was used to simulate programs and compile the code for the PIC microcontroller.

I am able to design and print circuit boards, use analogue and digital sensors and control outputs.

WAHL ShaverCustom Grip Redesign

This project was a 3D modelling exercise. By using a ZCorp 3D scanner to take surface data from a modelling-clay mould,I was able to create an accurate surface model of the indentations left by my grip on the shaver. The surface model was then smoothed and thickened, allowing me to incorporate the custom grip into my modelled copy of a Wahl shaver.

IntegratedThe surface is integrated with the seperate CAD model parts.

RemodelledThe shaver skin was then remodelled with the new surface.

AssembledThe remaining parts were modelled and assembled.

MeshedThe scan data is used to create a surface mesh in Rhino 3D.

RenderedHigh resolution renders were produced in Keyshot for a display board.

Floor Plans

I was employed by a friend to draw up basic building plans for a cabin construction project on their land. The planning officials used this series of scale drawings to confirm legitimacy and authorise the project's initiation.

A two-story floor plan was used as an underlay to create a CAD model of the building to the client's specification.

2DFully dimensioned, scale drawings were produced from a 3D model of the structure.

3DI modelled a 3D representation of the proposed building which I was able to use for orthographicic and isometric projections

Ergonomic Function

Back To BackFolding, Reversable Furniture

These chairs can transform to suit rooms and needs. The laminated rocker allows the user's body to fall into its natural equilibrium.

Anthropometric data was used to define the positioning and influence the forms.

A solid rosewood back, cut from a selected fork in a tree would be highly wasteful and expensive but would offer the highest quality, aesthetically. Bent lamination would be a more appropriate method of forming the back and laminated ash would certainly be used for the rocker.

The development of this series of furniture was processed through multiple sketch and CAD iterations.

I designed a lounger and straight-backed dining chair that transform into reclined rocking chairs. Rocking chairs allow the user's body to becomeautomatically positioned in a balanced and comfortable posture. These chairs offer that comfort with elegant, modern style.

PTC Creo was used to establish the centre of mass for each iteration and therefore the balancing point

Compact Engineering Ltd is a Thirsk based engineering firm, specialing in the design and manufacture of infrared drying equipment, predominantly for the paper industry.

During my sponsored placement at Compact Engineering Ltd, one of the projects I was tasked with designing was a stabilising reflector unit. This unit was the counterpart for the company’s flagship equipment, the Apollo MKIV Infrared Emitter. I needed to design the reflector in such a way that the end shrouds delivered cooling airflow over vital parts whilst creating a laminar flow which would stabilise the sheet, passing between the Apollo emitter and the reflector unit. This required weeks of intensive research and development as well as the application of fluid dynamic analysis and detailed CAD drawings for manufacture, which I learnt on the job through my experience with the company. This assembly was shipped to Mitsubishi Papertech in Germany for testing.

Rapid Resonse Water Toxicity Tester

Year 2 Design ProjectThe breif stated that would must identify a new product opportunity that utilises the ability to download applications on demand to perform a specific task. I designed and created a non-funtional prototype for a hand-held water toxicity tester, to be used by adventur-ers and outdoorsmen. New information about recently discovered pathogens can be down-loaded and used to identify such threats.

Year 1 Design ProjectThe breif was to design a digital radio for a given theme: Rugged, Streamlined or Future Organic. I chose the future organic path and creating a form prototype from modelling foam, inspired by bone structure. This page displays a selection of the development sketches as well as foam model sketches and final model.

First Year Design Project: Higher Tier Electric Shaver

Group Project: Artboards demonstating group effort and my contributing; sketches. The design brief outlined the re-design of an existing product, creating a more desirable and functional item. Our group focussed mainly on the ergonomics of a Boots electricshaver, improving the user experience through enhancedmanipulation of the device. The artboards were not compiled bymyself, however, they contain many of my sketches as well as images of a foam model prototype, pictured on right hand board.

Welded mild steel stag. Studies and finished piece. Welded using a MIG setup and referenced from photographs. Final sculpture stands at 7 feet and 10 inches tall and took 8 weeks of work. Inspiraton taken mainly from the works of Anthony Gormley’and Rupert Till. A great deal of what I have learnt about resistant materials I have accumulated due to my experience with experimenting and making mistakes whilst creating sculptures. Although, now I mainly work with materials for a less artistic cause, I use my artistic side to my advantage when engineering and designing.
