Hello everyone,
I am delighted to introduce our new CEO Charmian Boyd.
Charmian is taking over as CEO at Harrow Carers and will be
bringing some fresh, new ideas to the charity and listening to
carers and supporters about how we can provide the best possible
support and services. Charmian is keen to focus on providing the
best for carers and to hear from anyone with suggestions and
ideas so please do get in touch if you would like to contribute to
future plans.
We are also holding consultation events for carers over the coming
weeks to listen and find out what carers need most and how we
can improve on the existing range of services we provide. We
would really appreciate any carers contacting us to help by contributing their experiences and
ideas to the consultations. As an example, we have recently reviewed our membership
programme and, implementing the feedback we received from carers, we have introduced our
new “Wellbeing Package”.
You may have heard of the Social Prescribing Service which is launching in Harrow. This is a
new service which Harrow Carers is part of. A team of link workers based at GP practices in
Harrow will be helping patients and carers to access non-clinical support in the community to
help reduce the demand on doctors where clinical and medical solutions are not required. Look
out for the service when you visit your GP – Lucinder is the Link Worker based with Harrow
Carers and linking with Simpson House Medical Centre and HealthSense Primary Care
Network – see here for a patient guide https://www.healthwatchharrow.co.uk/sites/default/files/
pcn_infosheet_general.pdf
Finally, I will be retiring at the end of March after almost 23 years of community service in
Harrow which started when I volunteered for Harrow Carers in 1997. It has been a wonderful
experience and I’m happy that we have an excellent new CEO to take Harrow Carers on into
the next phase of its development. Thanks to everyone who has supported me and the charity
over my time here and I wish everyone the best for the future.

Mayor’s Surprise Visit!
As part of his tour of Harrow, the mayor visits one
of our very own Carers, Bernard Augar, 94 who is
the main carer for his wife, Patricia Augar. Bernard
was indeed honoured to be able to host the Mayor
at his Edgware residence and without hesitation
shared this moment captured in the picture below/
above with us.
Present at the time was Angela, one of our proud
serving Care Support Workers who was on duty at
the time of the mayor’s unannounced visit.
Thank you Mike, enjoy your retirement!
Message from the staff team
Mike has been working for Harrow Carers for over 15 years and has worked extremely hard to build and improve services for carers within Harrow. He has taken Harrow Carers from
humble beginnings to a point where we are leaders in providing innovative, supportive services for carers and their loved ones.
He has provided great vision and leadership and has been very supportive of the staff teams desire to continually improve and find new ways of providing services for carers.
The staff team wish Mike all the very best with his retirement and hope that he will now have time to do all of the things that he has planned for.
Take care Mike and please do pop in and see us from time to time.

Working for Carers
Carers Trust celebrates success of the Working for Carers project
Staff from Carers Trust and its London-based Network Partners gathered in central London to celebrate the success WFC that’s helping unpaid carers move back into employment.
They were joined by carers from across London who have benefited from the project.
Since October 2016 146 unpaid carers or former carers have found employment thanks to Working for Carers, an innovative partnership between Carers Trust and its London-based Network Partners.
A further 84 have moved into education or training while 74 are actively searching for work. Many more of the 739 carers or former carers who have registered with the project have taken a step forward by developing their CV and building confidence through attending project workshops.
Having demonstrated its success in engaging carers and helping them move back into work, Working for Carers will now move into a second phase of growth. The project aims to register and support increasing numbers of carers across London. And it will also implement learning from the first phase of the project, with a stronger focus on both employer engagement and tighter recruitment criteria for carers.
Speaking at the Working for Carers showcase event.
Malcolm Moore, one of the carers who has been helped back into employment, said:
“My Working for Carers Employment Personal Adviser, Nem, has supported
me since 2018. He helps people like myself in difficult and challenging
personal circumstances begin the re-turn to employment with one-to-one
support, advice and training.”
© Carers Trust
And reflecting on the success of Working for Carers, Director of England at Carers Trust, Kathryn Hill, said
“Three in five of us will become a carer for a family member at some point in our lives. And many such carers will need to give up their job to be able to provide that care. So it’s vital that there is support for carers at that crucial stage. That’s what Working for Carers is able to do, building carers’ confidence and skills so they are ready to take that next step of applying for work when the moment is right.
If you would like to talk to Nem or the Working for Carers Team, please contact us on 02088685224 ext 218 or email [email protected]

Young Carers Schools Get Together – Oxygen - December 2019
In December 2019 the young carers team organised the 3rd Young Carers
Schools Get Together at Oxygen Trampolining Park, Acton. It was a chance
for those attending our young carers high school drop ins to come together
under one roof for an afternoon of fun and respite from their caring
responsibilities. Over 70 young carers attended from 7 high schools across
Harrow – Nower Hill, Hatch End High, Park High, Whitmore, Rooks Heath,
Bentley Wood and Harrow High.
Young Carers New Year, New Me Session Jan 2020
Young Carers took part in a variety of games and activities which allowed them to get to know each other.
Abigail Agyemang one of our former young carers, now a young adult carer gave an amazing question and
answer session to our young carers. They learnt how they can manage their caring role and still apply to
attend university. Abigail and our Chairman Manoj Varsani were really instrumental in building up the
young carers self-esteem. They spent time writing down what goals they want to achieve this year and be-
yond then we brainstormed what steps to take to achieve them. We also identified causes of stress and
coping mechanisms. At the end of the session we were pleased to spend time with 3 parents, providing
much needed advice and support.
During the February half term we have a 3 day Arts Music & Song writing workshop with CREATE.

Price structure.
As from October 2019 our very competitive Homecare rates increased to as follows; Monday to Friday Daytime: £18.00an hour Evening rates during the week from 6pm £21.00 an hour. Weekend rates starting from 6pm Friday evening to 7am Monday morning £21.00 an hour.
In order to keep up with pay rates as they increase in the future, we have introduced a 2% annual

into the future.
The new prices will also be more competitive than the UKHCA’s (United Kingdom Home Care Associa-
tion) minimum sustainable price for local authority care provision which is £18.93 per hour. These rates
are calculated to cover the costs of care including; care workers' pay, travel time, travel costs, training and

Homecare
We aim to provide a person centred, bespoke respite service to help maintain the health and wellbeing of
all unpaid carers in the London Borough of Harrow. Once people are identified and referred to Harrow.
Our Carers will:
Arrange to visit the carer at home to carry out a care needs assessment, including a risk assessment
and behavioural and emergency medical assessment if applicable. This is to ensure that all aspects of
safety are covered and enables us to ensure we can meet the needs of the carer and the cared-for.
Develop a user-led personal care plan with, and agreed by, the carer. The actual provision of care will
be part of the personal service user plan and will be agreed by both Harrow Carers and the carer.
An annual reassessment of personal care plans or sooner if there is a change of circumstances. This
is to ensure that Harrow Carers continues to deliver a first class service to the carer.
Providing minimum respite of one and up to as many hours as required each day for carers.
Providing out of office hours mobile telephone contacts for the carer and our Care Support Workers.

The Outing “Let’s go to the zoo on the way back!”
“OK, good idea,” we replied, with contemporary ambivalence about the predator and the prey.
Relieved to have seen
contented animals at play, and keepers more like carers,
we came to the glass and, behind it, the tiger,
staring intently – those eyes.
The sleek elegance of his stride as he walked around the lake
close behind Bruce, his keeper; eager attention and sharp focus
as Bruce whispered and rang a bell.
Quietly, this carer spoke of how the great tiger had come to lose
his sight, his eyes, and how other glass was made just for him –
those eyes.
We watch them both, sharing skills, neither predator nor prey.

Advertise Here At Harrow Carers we’re always trying our best to make sure we’re doing as much as we can for the community of Harrow and it’s carers. These bulletins go out to over 2,000 people every three months and over half of those being print copies. Since we print our copies and send them out the bulletins can cost a lot to make which is why we’ve made the decision to start offering space to local organisations who want to advertise on our bulletins. We know that adverts could become tedious and potentially annoying which is why we’re aiming to promote the services that we think will really benefit our carers and the community so we can continue to be informative and useful to you, the carers.
If you would like to advertise in the next bulletin. Please Call 02088685224 to request a media pack with information.
