Look out for the venue colour coding throughout the brochure so you know where each event takes place.

A stunning 1000-seat Edwardian performance hall, and the UK’s only surviving Kursaal, hosting some of the biggest and best entertainment.

A 70-seat versatile performance space situated on the top floor of Harrogate Theatre, hosting theatrical experiences from some of the most exciting emerging companies producing an eclectic mix of shows.

A 500-seat Victorian theatre hosting an array of drama, comedy, music, dance, family entertainment and education programmes.

God’s Own County is teeming with dramaturgical talent – companies, writers, directors and actors – and that’s why last year we decided to make a fuss about the exciting diversity of Yorkshire theatre in All Points North, an annual mini-season that puts Yorkshire in the limelight. Two world premieres, two major revivals and one exciting new play starting its first tour: the second All Points North festival looks set to capitalise on the success of last year’s inaugural Yorkshire jamboree, with more plays and more breadth showcasing even more Yorkshire brilliance. Northern Broadsides returns, premiering another smashing social comedy and fresh Yorkshire company Rich Seam Theatre presents the premiere of a new Nick Lane comic play. Yorkshire playwriting institution John Godber revives Teechers, his classic look at education, and Reform Theatre bring David Bown’s comedy of manners and football back onto the pitch. Finally, brand new troupe Elemental Theatre Company takes Sarah Wallis’s The Rain King on its first ever tour, kicking off in Harrogate. It’s going to be champion.

The Grand Gesture

Simeon Duff is working class, unemployed and desperate. His wife works. He’s lost all self-esteem. He’s on the scrapheap and wants to end it all. So begins this brilliant comedy about a man on the edge.

When word gets out that Duff is going to top himself, a host of ne’er-do-wells crawl out of the woodwork, each wanting to claim his grand gesture for their ‘noble’ cause. Will Duff do it? And will it be for love, politics, religion – or the rising price of fish?

1882. After years of inspiration, innovation, and occasional idiocy, Yorkshireman Thomas Crapper is given the commission to provide toilets for Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

On the eve of the first ‘royal flush,’ Thomas writes a very personal letter - to a girl he hasn’t seen in more than 40 years...

2012. At an old people’s home in Crapper’s home town of Thorne, Joe, a ‘maintenance engineer’ (toilet cleaner), has the job of a lifetime on his hands: he’s got to get all the toilets - even the awkward one in Room 8 - sparkling clean in preparation for a Diamond Jubilee royal visit.

Has he got enough Cif to cope? Can he persuade Fat Irene to keep off the nuts? And will his secret plan to solve all his problems work?

Following last year’s brilliant Beef, Rich Seam Theatre presents the world premiere of this hilarious double-bill, showing how our attitudes to toilets, and the royal flush, have changed over the years.

Teechers

TUE 24 - SAT 28 SEPT

A biting, witty comedy from the writer of Bouncers, Up ‘n’ Under and Losing The Plot.

Gail, Hobby and Salty are three fifth form students who, through their end of term play, tell the hilarious story of an idealistic new teacher in his perilous first days inside a local comprehensive school. In this contemporary classic, the three cast members effortlessly transform into a vast array of other characters, including teachers, dinner ladies, students and, of course, the school bully.

Teechers puts the education system under a microscope, examining themes and issues still relevant today.

STUDIOTHEATREWED 25 - SAT 28 SEPT

Arriving in sub-Saharan Africa, gap-year student and part-time Elvis impersonator Aidan has with him his principles, his broken heart and his Elvis costume. Janet is his supervisor; a woman with a Mrs Robinson complex, who ran away to Africa 20 years ago and never ran back. And then there is Msoko, Janet’s African fixer, who has her own stories to tell.

As Aidan searches for belonging and peace, others search for comfort and water. What secrets are people hiding? Will they find water? Will the goat survive? And will the Rain King’s peculiar brand of magic ever materialize?

In this time of austerity we need reminding that grand ideas led by inspiring people looking to their heroes still have a chance of success. The Rain King asks questions about how we survive: from where the water supply is coming from, to how we make it from sunrise to sunset each day.

Audiences in Venice loved to laugh at the vices of gods and heroes, as their prolific master, Cavalli, understood. Jason was his most popular opera, and the runaway success of the century.

Director Ted Huffman (The Lighthouse) promises an evening in the spirit of Venetian opera: heady, light-hearted, and dangerous to know. Clint van der Linde (Flavio, Xerxes) returns to ETO as the errant hero, and Hannah Pedley makes a glamorous debut as Medea.

Vivaldi: Music For A Venetian Orphanage

FRI 1 NOV

Monteverdi’s final masterpiece is often described as his greatest achievement featuring some of his most glorious music. One of the first operas to use historical events and people, it tells the story of Nero’s infatuation with the beautiful Poppea as she tries to make him divorce his wife, and take her as Empress of Rome.

ETO soloists and baroque orchestra the Old Street Band join forces with Harrogate Vocalis in this atmospheric concert of music for the celebrated orphan musicians of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, where Vivaldi worked for most of his life. Don’t miss Vivaldi’s stunning sacred music in the beautiful setting of St Wilfrid’s Church.

Regarded as Handel’s first operatic masterpiece, Agrippina stands out for the quality of its music.

The Statement ofRandolph Carter

FRI 22 & SAT 23 NOV TUE 10 DEC - SUN 5 JAN

In the hot Florida summer of 1920, strange occultist Harley Warren ventures deep underground. With only his dimming lantern to guide him, he feels for the damp, moulding steps that mark his descent. The corpse-rich smell of hideous entombment forces him to retch but still he descends. The ceremony must begin.

Up on the surface, Randolph Carter, Warren’s assistant, listens to his boss’s progress on a portable telephone set and his own fear mounts. A scream! It’s Warren...

Following the success of The Call of Cthulhu, Michael Sabbaton returns with another of H.P. Lovecraft’s chilling tales about forbidden knowledge in this character-driven adaptation full of subtle horror.

Celebrated children’s author Edith Nesbit escapes her annual Christmas Eve soiree and finds herself in her attic writing room with a young male guest and Biddy Thricefold, her loyal housekeeper. The trio decide to observe the festive tradition of reading scary stories to help ward off wicked spirits, choosing the stories penned by Nesbit herself. Yet as they breathe life into these terrifying creations, all is not as it seems… One of the people in the attic is hiding a deadly secret. Millions have grown up with the fabled work of E Nesbit, which includes classic novels Five Children and It and The Railway Children, but she began her writing career as a mistress of horror. For the first time ever, these flesh-creeping yarns have been freely adapted for the stage. Forget sweet Christmas treats and instead be chilled to the bone by vampire plants, a zombie bridegroom and spectral dancers.

A terrifying and tantalising collection of spooky theatre

M R James Ghost Stories

FRI 14 & SAT 15 FEB

More than a century after they were first published, the ghost stories of M R James retain their power to terrify and amuse. Nunkie returns with four of James’s most eerie and entertaining stories told over two nights.

Fri 14 Feb: A tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast, Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad is considered by many to be James’s masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented by The Ash Tree, a story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations.

Sat 15 Feb: In Canon Alberic’s Scrap-book, a young Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees. The Mezzotint finds a ghoulish revenge enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator in Oxford.

“A pleasing reminder that the spoken word can be as spine-chilling as anything in the cinema”The Daily Mail

TUE 28 - FRI 31 JAN

The year is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change, scientific mastery and media innovation. As traditional beliefs give way to a new world and all its unknown threats, an altogether darker fear emerges.

Stretching from London, through provincial England, to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stoker’s timeless gothic thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within. As Dracula’s shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, led by Professor Van Helsing, are locked in a struggle where only the fittest will survive.

Combining specially commissioned live music, powerful ensemble performances and innovative design, Blackeyed Theatre’s Dracula is a thrilling and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

Alan Ayckbourn’sBedroom FarceDelia and Ernest. Malcolm and Kate. Jan and Nick. Susannah and Trevor.

Three bedrooms plus four couples equals one chaotic night.

Funny, gripping and acutely observed, Alan Ayckbourn’s sophisticated comedy lifts the lid on the secrets of middle-class marriage. Over the course of one night, one outrageously selfish couple parade their problems around the bedrooms of three other couples, exposing the cracks in other people’s marriages as well as their own. A tightly written tragi-comedy, Bedroom Farce explores the varied pressures of relationships at different stages, slicing deep into the soul of suburbia.

Grease

THUR 28 - SAT 30 NOV

WED 2 - SAT 5 OCT WED 22 - SAT 25 JAN

WED 23 - SAT 26 OCT

Dave Thursby was a hugely successful television comedian, a national treasure loved by the public. As family and friends gather to give Dave a fitting send-off, it turns out they know rather less about him than they’d imagined and a series of revelations uncovers some home truths about the much-loved comedy legend.

It’s Christmas Eve. Neville and Belinda are entertaining in their warm, cosy house and Belinda is finishing off decorating the tree. Wine is flowing and so are emotions - leading to a few revelations. A late guest, passionate encounters and a puppet show are all part of this hilarious farcical comedy.

Willie Clark and Al Lewis are The Sunshine Boys – once comedy greats as a wisecracking double act, now in their seventies and not speaking to each other. CBS wants to reunite the couple for a “Legends of Comedy” show. But can they be persuaded to bury the hatchet and reform for one last performance?

Dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks and take a trip to a simpler time as ‘bad boy’ Danny and ‘the girl next door’ Sandy fall in love all over again. Come down and find out why Grease is the word.
