Wednesday, Feb. 5 Begins A New Decade for WNF and SGU

It is fitting that in the year 2020 Wednesday Night Fellowship and Spiritual Growth University will include old favorites, new favorites, and outstanding opportunities for spiritual growth.

Dinner at 5:30 In the area of new favorite, the Fellowship Committee is outdoing themselves by providing the kick-off meal. There will be a soup bar that includes: Ham and Bean, Cheesy Broccoli, Chicken and Dumpling, Loaded Potato, and Taco Soups. It will also include all the trimmings AND desert! It sounds like a LOT to eat, so invite friends!

Classes at 6:15 Youth Join Kahla and the gang for games, devotionals, fellowship and FUN! Activities for ages K-12 begin at 5:30. The nursery is also available for the younger children.

Adult Choir Everyone is welcome! No auditions required. Smiles guaranteed. If you have ever considered singing with the choir this is a great time to join and share your gifts.

First Christian Church: Our Future Story Dr. Artman will discuss the results of the Hope Partnership Epiphany Assessment. This will include:

1. An analysis of the church’s current assets and resources as well as research on possible mission opportunities in the community. 2. A discussion that uses the findings of the assessment to define a future direction for FCC. Go-ing forward, what is our story? We aspire to a story that honors God and our history but is relevant for 21st century needs. 3. A description of opportunities where you can fit in to our continuing story of serving as a Disci-ple of Christ.

You can expect: 1. To be inspired, motivated, and encouraged about our future. 2. Local leaders to detail opportunities, both large and small, where you can serve. 3. Dr. D to laugh a lot and make the class fun. Class to be held in the Mustard Seed Room.

Bible Study Jim Brattin continues to lead a class that is always relevant, always educational, always open, and always entertaining (in a very biblical way.) Is there a more appropriate way of beginning the new year than with resolving to read more of the Bible? Everyone who attends this class declares it a blessing. Arrive early for the best seat. Just kidding, there is room for all.

Meditation Back by popular demand! Join Holly Gillies and other guest leaders in a time of meditation, contemplation, and prayer. This class includes pros and newbies alike sharing a common goal of living a more mindful life, centered in Christ. Come for the semester or drop in when you can. Class will meet in the Hearth Room.

Share Your Gifts This class consists of a series of stand-alone classes. Each Wednesday night class will feature a different “master” sharing the secrets of his/her unique talent or knowledge. The exact masters and class topics will be determined by your votes. Ballots for class choices are in the newsletter, Facebook, and vestibule. From The Heart

I believe that 2020 is going to be an important year for First Christian Church as we look to the future. With the help of Hope Partnership we are learning to think a new way about being church, and we are looking to-wards a new chapter in the history of the church. The new way of thinking involves us being very intentional about getting out into the community in a more coordi-nated way. I was struck again recently about how Jesus commanded his disciples to let their light shine before others, “…so that they may see your good deeds and glo-rify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

We already have a history of doing good deeds in the community, but now we are going to put an even greater emphasis on it. And we are not only going to do good deeds, we are also going to work at doing a better job of hearing the stories of the people we are minister-ing with. It’s as simple as saying to them, “So, if you’d like, tell me your story. I’d be interested to hear it.” So many people never get asked that question.

As a for instance, I went to the Crossing Grounds last Saturday night at 6:00 for our coffee and worship night, and I asked that question to a few people I’d never met before. And they seemed to really appreciate it that somebody cared enough to ask. As I began to hear their stories they became "real" to me if that makes sense. I wasn't just seeing a person in front of me. I was seeing them in the context of their life story.

These are exciting times. There are so many oppor-tunities for us to reach out, and to serve, and to get to know. If you want to get involved just try coming to the Crossing on Saturday nights maybe once a month, or come to House of Hope warming center with us on Tuesdays for meal and fellowship time. If neither of these options work for you I'd be happy to help brain-storm some other opportunities to meet and greet and get to know the people we are already ministering with in our community! Onward and Upward! Your Pastor, Dr. D

Adventure

Report!

Can you believe the first month of January is already gone?! It’s gone by very quickly here at church and we have some very exciting things to look forward to as we head into February!

Firstly Wednesday Night Fellowship will re-turn on February 5th! It’s going to be awesome to have the gang back together on Wednesday nights. The Youth will be continuing their lesson series out of Ephesians: The Simple Gospel with Ephesians Part II: Now What? It’s going to be really fun.

Next, Noah’s Arts will resume on February 12th! If you’d like your 1-4th grader to have transporta-tion from school to church on Wednesday afternoons, I’ll just need a signed permission for them by the 11th. They will be in the foyer here at church on Sundays. If you would like and electronic copy just send me an email at [email protected]

Registration for the youth summer mission trip to Memphis, Tennessee (June 29th-July 3rd) will be opening in February as well. If your child is entering 6th -12th grade and you’d like them to participate feel free to contact me. There will also be a sign up sheet here at church for that.

Last but certainly not least: It is Wild Game time again! This year the event will be on Sunday March 8th. If you’d like to be involved or donate items please get in touch with me. Thank you very much to Disciples Men for supporting our youth again this year. This event allows our youth to have great experi-ences all year long and we do not take it for granted.

It’s going to be a fun, busy month and I could-n’t be more excited! Looking forward to the journey with all of you!

Sharing Your Gifts Class

We are excited to announce the plans for a series of stand-alone classes coming to Spiritual Growth University in February. The series is called: “Share Your Gifts.” Each Wednesday night will fea-ture a different “master” sharing the secrets of his/her unique talent or knowledge. Some class topics are already planned, but we would love your input. Listed below are some possi-ble classes. Which of these classes might you be interested in attending? The education committee would greatly appreciate you taking a moment to vote for your favorites. Ballots are in the church vestibule or you can message the FCC Facebook page, or email [email protected] or text/phone to 870-715-5421. Vote for as many classes as you like. If you are interested in something not listed, feel free to de-scribe it. If you have a talent that you would be willing to share, please consider passing that along to others in a one-night class. We hope to have the class schedule finalized and published early February.

Groups Meeting at Our Church According to Hope Partnership, one of the areas for growth for our church involves better use of

our church building through the week. We should not only be excited to host outside groups at our

building, but we should also be getting to know the people better. In February we have Parenting

Classes on Saturdays from 9:00 til 3:00. On Sunday, Feb. 9 we have a song writing group having

their monthly meeting in the Crossing. On Monday, Feb. 10 we have the first meeting of an ex-

pecting mother’s Bible study group which will be held in the Crossing. On Feb. 12 the Christian

Women’s Connection will be meeting in our Fellowship Hall. These are all ways our church facili-

ty is being used, and these are all opportunities to get to know the people in these groups better. If

you’d like to be involved in greeting these people and hearing their stories, I’d be happy to visit

with you about this opportunity. If you can’t work that in, then know that our church facility is be-

ing used in more ways than you were maybe aware!
