Commentary

The Olympic torch relay heads the awareness list in this Harris Buzz.

Since the start of its relay around the UK, the Olympic torch has attracted extensive media coverage and it is of no surprise that almost the entire population is aware of it, and familiar to men and women of all ages.

Facebook’s floatation has also drawn considerable attention, particularly as share prices fell shortly after, placing it second in our list ahead of the new Men In Black movie.

Headlines surrounding News International continue with the criticism of Murdoch featuring prominently in the news (although familiarity with this story is lower than the other hacking-related articles covered in Buzz over the past 12 months).

Of the three flagship smartphones in this edition, Samsung’s Galaxy S3 achieves slightly higher awareness than the HTC One or the Lumia 900 series although there is little to tell them apart in terms of current familiarity.

Other news topics prove to be more niche. The delay to the Digital Economy Act props up the foot of the table with 1 in 5 at least somewhat familiar.

Commentary

Among those at least “somewhat familiar”, the Olympic torch proves the primary talking point.

As one of the most prominent stories in May, it’s unsurprising to see almost two thirds of those familiar with the Olympic torch are discussing it – notably in regions of the country where it has already passed. (78% in the South West have or will discuss it.)

Despite being the least familiar news story, the delay to the Digital Economy Act has created considerable discussion among those ‘in the know’ (highest among 16-24 year olds) and sits in second alongside Men In Black 3.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has proved to be the flagship handset most talked about, ahead of the HTC One. Both of these devices are being discussed more than the Nokia Lumia series.

Commentary

We now look at the same data but including those who previously said they were not familiar with the stories - to give a total population perspective.

The high level of interest in the Olympic torch relay is further emphasised here with more than half the population saying they have or will discuss it.

Men In Black 3 moves into a clear second place for discussion across the nation, most notably among those aged 16-24 and scores comparably with The Inbetweeners and Titanic 3D (previously measured on Buzz).

Facebook shares and the Murdoch censure are also being widely discussed – although the latest instalment in the hacking saga is less widely discussed than other related stories we’ve covered in Buzz.

Despite proving a major talking point among those ‘in the know’, the delay to the Digital Economy Act has not generated notable discussion at a national level.

Commentary

Among those familiar with each of the news stories, it is those that are ‘out of this world’ that generate most excitement!

Men In Black 3 has grown as a franchise over the past 15 years and, with a high profile cast lead by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, proves to be the topic creating most excitement – particularly among younger fans (69% of 16-24s are excited by the film).

And, although not quite so widely discussed, approximately half of those familiar with the proposed asteroid mining venture are also excited by it – again, standing out among the younger audience (72% among 16-24s).

As seen across this report for familiarity and discussion, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One are also ahead of Nokia’s Lumia for excitement.

While not proving a topic many are familiar with, or one being widely discussed, the Official Charts Company’s launch of an online music streams chart has created comparably high excitement among those ‘in the know’.

Commentary

When we look at the level of excitement generated among the GB population overall, we see the Olympic torch relay regain top spot.

Due to its high level of familiarity across the nation, the Olympic torch relay has proved the most exciting topic covered this edition and, while discussion is currently greatest in regions the torch has been, excitement is heightened in the capital where the Olympics ultimately take place (London, 56%).

With its growing fan base, the Men In Black 3 movie also stands out for achieving considerable excitement across the nation and is second only to the final Harry Potter for all the movies we’ve covered so far.

Excitement surrounding the other news stories considerably trail these two.

Samsung Galaxy S3 maintains its position as the smartphone most are excited about and the Murdoch report heads the remaining articles.

Excitement surrounding the online/digital new stories prove to be more specialised and tend peak the interest only among those with a specific interest.
