The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a crack in the earth‘s crust, roughly 50 kilometres offshore, running 1,100 kilometres from northern Vancouver Island to northern California. It has generated massive earthquakes not just once or twice, but over and over again throughout geologic time—at least 36 major Cascadia events in the last 10,000 years. This fault generates a mon-ster earthquake about every 500 years. And the monster is due to return at any time. It could happen 200 years from now, or it could be tonight.

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is virtually identical to the offshore fault that wrecked Sumatra on Boxing Day of 2004—it’s the same length, same width and with the same tectonic forces are at work. This means Cascadia’s fault will generate the same earthquake we saw in Sumatra, at magnitude 9 or higher, sending crippling shockwaves across a far wider area than any California quake. A Cascadia quake will slam Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, Portland, and Sacramento and will send cascading tidal waves to the shores of Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, destroying the fishing and timber industries and damaging the economies of the Pacific Rim countries and their trading partners for years to come.

Cascadia’s Fault tells the story of this potentially devastating earthquake and the tsunamis it will spawn, but will also, reminiscent again of the Sumatra disaster, will warn us about the impending loss of life and property in a crisis almost unprecedented in modern history.

Jerry thompson was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, and grew up in South Carolina. Now an award-winning documentary filmmaker living outside of Vancouver, British Columbia, Thompson has cov-ered everything from fishing, forestry and the First Nations of Canada to earthquakes and drought in California, from the ozone hole in Australia to the struggling Sandinista government in Nicaragua, ethnic civil war in Sri Lanka, and the chemical disaster in Bhopal. He climbed the Berlin Wall to witness the collapse of Communism, and won two Gemini awards for his stories about Bhopal and Berlin. For twenty years Jerry worked as a radio and television journalist in Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver, as a network news correspondent and a documentary film producer for CBC programs such as The National, The Journal and the fifth estate. He has written articles for Equinox, Read-er’s Digest and Vancouver magazine, and has produced and narrated television documentary specials on Cascadia’s fault that received wide critical praise.

From How to Be a Bush Pilot

Dear Aspiring Bush Pilot, Let me introduce myself. I am the best friend you never knew you had. I am the bossy madame in your sweaty locker room, the sleuth between your silk sheets. A Tink-erbell for your tackle, a bedroom de Bergerac, I am hid-ing in your closet, tucked under your desk, crouching on your windowsill – ready to help and ready to scold you with equal voracity. . . . In the following 288 pages, you will evolve from a man with good intentions and a few signature moves into a man with unparalleled technique. Your sexual willingness will become your sexual prowess. Your medieval sword: a light saber. Your BB gun: a six-shooter. Your name will be scrawled in lipstick across bathroom walls, tattooed to backsides, and held, hushed, on the ends of tongues. You will be a certified Bush Pilot. How to Be a Bush Pilot is boot camp for the modern playboy and sexual

adventurer, a masterclass in becoming the lover that every woman wants but doesn’t know how to ask for. It is funny. It is instructive. It winks and flirts. Its unwavering purpose: getting laid. Proficiently. Spanning from remedial education to moves that will educate even the savviest Wilt Chamberlain, Claudia Dey uses female insight to turn mere men into that elusive master of the bedroom: the Bush Pilot. How to Be a Bush Pilot is studded with pop culture references, swinging between high and low art but always focusing on the art of seduction. Think Led Zeppelin meets Ted Hughes meets wood paneling meets Henry Miller meets Def Leppard. In the bedroom. With a tone that reads like Tina Fey channeling Dr. Ruth, Dey ranges from the pre-game warm-ups of flirtation and fantasy, to charming the Little Buddha, to graduating from the regulars to the remote. How to Be a Bush Pilot is fearless, playful, always commanding yet never intimidating; the essential guide for every man who wants to be a legend and wants to laugh while trying.

Praise for Stunt

“At once hypnotic and dazzling, Stunt is, quite simply, a feat.” —The Globe and Mail

“This surrealist coming-of-age novel . . . is the perfect vehicle for Dey’s caustic wit and trenchant observations.” —Toronto Star

“Stunt is mesmerizing, rewarding, and breathtaking. Dey never lets up, never writes simply, plainly, or boringly.” —Quill & Quire, starred review

The co-author of the internationally best-selling The Rebel Sell skewers the myths of economics

Economists are usually right wing, they assume that everyone is self-inter-ested and amoral, and they are almost always cheerleaders for the market economy. As a result, most people who do not already share these beliefs ignore everything that economists have to say. This is a problem. Even among sophisticated practitioners, economics is a field in which people are unusually prone to fallacies. Among those who know nothing at all about the subject—a group that includes the average taxpayer and consumer, as well as most journalists, political activists, and politicians—almost every widely held belief is false. The level of economic illiteracy is stunning. At the same time, the average person has a great thirst for popu-lar, accessible writing on economics—witness the astounding success of Freakonomics and The Undercover Economist. People are starting to realize that the “dismal science” need not be so dismal. In Filthy Lucre, Joseph Heath, co-author of the international best-seller The Rebel Sell: Why the Culture Can’t Be Jammed, demonstrates that economics provides crucial lessons that anyone with a concern over social justice, or with a desire to build a better society, must learn. First dissecting six favourite economic fallacies of the right—the private sector is not more efficient than government, taxes can never be too high, and globalization and the myth of international competitiveness among them—Heath then skewers the six favourite economic fallacies of the left—the wet firecracker that is worker-self ownership, a postmortem on communism, and why profit is not evil. In the end, no sacred cow is left standing.

Joseph heath is an associate profes-sor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is the author of three previous books: The Rebel Sell: Why the Culture Can’t Be Jammed (with Andrew Potter); Communicative Action and Rational Choice, which won the Canadian Philosophical Association Book Prize for 2003; and The Efficient Society, a Maclean’s and Globe and Mail best-seller selected by the Globe as one of the best books of 2001. He writes a monthly column for the journal Policy Options and is a frequent contributor to The Montreal Gazette.

“This is a terrific book, courteous, clear, witty and fair . . . Heath has an almost [Adam] Smithian sense of the sophistication of human motivation.” —The Globe and Mail

“As he showed in previous books . . . Heath writes with a certain boldness, as well as clarity and wit.” —Winnipeg Free Press

roBert wright, Ph.D., is a professor of history at Trent University, specializing in foreign policy. He is the author of the national bestseller Three Nights in Havana, which won the 2008 Canadian Authors’ Association’s Lela Common Award for Canadian History and is currently being made into a feature documentary. He resides in Toronto with his wife and children. Visit him at www.robertwright.ca.

The world watched with fear in November 1979, when Iranian students infiltrated and occupied the American embassy in Tehran. As the city exploded in a fury of revolution, few knew about the six American embassy staff who escaped into hiding. For three months, Ken Taylor, the Canadian ambassador to Iran—along with his wife and embassy staffers—concealed the Americans in their homes, terrified that Ayatollah Khomeini would find out and exact deadly consequences.

January 28, 2010, marks the 30th anniversary of an event that stunned the world, when Ken Taylor masterminded the exfiltration of the six diplomats from Tehran. Americans were held in thrall as Ted Koppel updated the nation on the fate of its hostages and the Canadians orchestrated an intrepid escape. Americans celebrated in the streets across the nation, raising banners that read “Thank you, Canada!”

In Our Man in Tehran, Robert Wright, author of the award-winning national bestseller Three Nights in Havana, tells the story behind a major historical flashpoint, a story of cloak-and-dagger intrigue, the stuff of John le Carré and Frederick Forsyth made real.

Praise for Three Nights in Havana

“The book’s genuine charm lies in its evocation of the querulous yet quirky mood of the 70s and, in particular, of the love affair between Pierre and Margaret Trudeau.” —john english, The Globe and Mail

“Masterfully portrayed. . . . The power of Three Nights in Havana comes . . . from the account of the Trudeau–Castro friendship, and the revelation of its emotional inclusion of Margaret and the Trudeau sons.”

Since his mountaintop experience, Shackel has instructed business stu-dents, executives and corporations how to apply the “five seconds at a time” approach for extreme success in business and in life.

With a compelling mix of adventure, survival and inspiring case studies, Five Seconds at a Time, offers leaders around the world the accessible tools to achieve the seemingly impossible in business and in life.

Big Ideas and Marketing Tales from the Hypermarket

To get around a ban on alcohol advertising, a Russian oligarch starts a bank with the same name as his premium bestselling vodka. Russian Standard is still the #1 vodka and is now the largest consumer bank, issuing 77 percent of credit cards in the country. Silk Street market, the epicenter of piracy and counterfeiting in China, launches its own brand of clothing. A Thai com-pany captivates millions of consumers by installing combs in the tangled wires above the streets of Bangkok to promote its hair-care products.

We live in a brand new world where marketing is taking on incredible new forms, especially in the hyper-developing “BRIC” countries: Brazil, Russia, India and China. The almost unimaginable economic growth in these nations is revolutionizing marketing across the globe. Drawing from over two years of extensive travel and research, award-winning creative director Max Lenderman shares groundbreaking marketing strategies and business models that every savvy marketer and business visionary needs to understand.

Brisk, fascinating and a little shocking, Brand New World is both a window and a mirror, an indispensable guide for the new era of global marketing.

laurence packer studied zoology at Oxford before completing his PhD at the University of Toronto. He has been a Professor of Biology at York University in Toronto for more than twenty years. He has published over 80 refereed research papers on bees, and his research has been funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and National Geographic, among other organizations. He is a mem-ber of numerous national and international research groups. His research collection is the second largest (after the National Collection housed by Agriculture Canada in Ottawa) in Canada and is an internationally important resource for bee taxonomy and systematics. He lives in Toronto.

The life of Dr. Laurence Packer, an internationally renowned Oxford-trained etymologist, revolves around bees, whether it’s searching for them under leaves in a South American jungle or in the desert heat of Arizona, or tracking down and identifying new species, which he often names after his family and friends. In his research he has lured bees into traps with the twang of a guitar string, has found himself out of gas in the middle of nowhere with only his bees to keep him company, and with unusual curators in the darkest recesses of forgotten museums scaring up lost specimens. In what many would expect would be a quiet profession, Packer keeps it interesting. Recently, however, his research has proven out a sud-den and calamitous decline in the world’s bee populations, and find out why has become his greatest concern. Packer suggests that a world without bees would be vastly different than the one we live in now. Bees pollinate most of our flowers, and without their efforts the flowers would begin to disappear and the world would be a much less colourful place. Bees are responsible for one third of our food supply, and without them food will become much more expensive and cof-fee will be in short supply. Their decline is an early warning of an unravel-ling of the web of nature. He has made it his life’s work to educate people about our need for bees—not just the honeybees, now in a crisis due to the sudden colony collapse, but bees of thousands of other species that we can find in our forests, gardens, and the nooks and crannies around our homes on every continent but Antarctica. This is a celebration of all bees, and a warning about our collective future, from a scientist dedicated to educating the world about what we would lose if we didn’t have them.

One man’s obsession with, and interna-tiontional pursuit of, an extinct species

non-fiction 10

dr. glen chilton, Professor Emeritus at St. Mary’s University College in Calgary, Alberta, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, Australia, is an internationally rec-ognized ornithologist and behavioural ecolo-gist, and the world’s leading authority on the extinct Labrador Duck. The author of acclaimed The Curse of the Labrador Duck (HarperCollins, Canada; S&S U.S., Australia), Chilton now resides in Australia.

The Labrador Duck, extinct for more than 100 years, once roamed North America, but little is known about this striking black-and-white bird. Often mentioned in the same breath as the Passenger Pigeon, Dodo and Great Auk, stuffed specimens housed in glass and plastic in museums and private collections around the world, are rare—only 55 are known to exist. Even more rare is the kind of scientist who would travel the world over more than three times in search for every last authentic stuffed bird. That rare specimen is Dr. Glen Chilton, a biologist with a self-pro-fessed obsessive personality. His pursuit of the rare, extinct species brought him into encounters with a Scottish hermit, Russian gangsters and a jailed sheik. Chilton travelled to the duck’s known habitat on Canada’s east coast, but also to museums and personal collections (and on many adventures) in Germany, Russia, Scotland, Montreal, the United Kingdom, France, Ireland, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Prague, Vienna, and across the United States and the Middle East. Over the course of his epic journey, Chilton encountered a colourful array of collectors, scientists, journalists, and others, and earned numerous hangovers, swam naked in a glacier-fed stream, and narrowly avoid arrest in New York City. The Curse of the Labrador Duck is truly a story of obsession, a quest unlike any other, a near-impulsive journey around the planet in pursuit of a bird no one has seen alive since the nineteenth century.

Praise for Curse of the Labrador Duck

“The Curse of the Labrador Duck is a fascinating wild goose chase (where the geese are all dead and aren’t technically

geese). Glen Chilton—currently my favorite hard-drinking ornithologist—is a wonderful guide, with prose that

calls to mind James Herriot and Bill Bryson.” —AJ Jacobs, author of The Year of Living Biblically and

The Know-It-All

“I’ve seen my share of strange quests, have taken part in a few myself, but nothing matches Glen Chilton’s galloping

obsession to corner the market on rare stuffed ducks. A funny, fast-paced and oddly heroic tale.”

—Will Ferguson, author of How to Be a Canadian

“From the wilds of Nova Scotia to the neglected bowels of decrepit museums, Glen Chilton is in relentless pursuit of

evidence of the extinct Labrador duck. And the curse? You’ll have to read this engaging adventure to find out.”—Tim Flannery, author of The Weather Makers

The author of acclaimed The Curse of the Labrador Duck (HarperCollins, Canada; S&S U.S., Australia), Chilton now resides in Australia.

From the author of the rollicking The Curse of the Labrador Duck, in which the author traveled the world over more than three times to seek out every last stuffed specimen of the extinct Labrador Duck in prose “that calls to mind James Herriot and Bill Bryson” (AJ Jacobs), Glen Chilton returns with yet another quest, this time to seek out species ill-advisedly introduced into foreign environments.

Chilton visits Ireland to witness how the big, bright and beautiful rhodo-dendron, an ornamental plant that escaped a private garden, now threat-ens to choke out the last of the great oak forests of the United Kingdom. He escapes blood-thirsty midges and a murderous Hungarian architect while visiting a colony of forgotten Scottish wallabies; finds out how termites, brought in on packing crates after the Second World War, con-tributed to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans; eludes angry Barbary macques in Gibraltar; dodges crocodiles and AK47s in the eucalyptus forests of Ethiopia; avoids licking the red-eared slider, a toxic frog, in South Africa; and steps over landmines with the exploding sheep population of the Falkland Islands. And, in true Glen Chilton fashion, he never turns down the opportunity to share a few ales with eccentric locals, often finding himself in the right place at the wrong time.

The Attack of the Killer Rhododendrons is an often playful, occasionally seri-ous, and always obsessive quest unlike any other.

Bridget stutchBurythe Bird detective

non-Fiction 12

Bridget stutchBury was born in Montreal and raised in Toronto. She completed her master’s of science at Queen’s University and her Ph.D. at Yale, was a fellow and research associate at the Smithsonian Institute and is now professor of biology at York University. Recognized as an inter-national birding expert, she is affiliated with more than a dozen organizations seeking to preserve bird habitats, including the World Wildlife Fund. She was selected by the Toronto Star as one of the “People to Watch in 2005” after her groundbreak-ing research into the sexual antics of birds made headlines around the world. Stutchbury lives in Woodbridge, Ontario.

A Yale educated professor of biology, Bridget Stutchbury roams forests and jungles studying the sexual antics of birds, sharing with us the curious rea-sons for their plumage and their often sordid calls. Why are some species like the soap opera characters of the animal kingdom? And are birds truly faithful to their mates, as we’re so often told? Stutchbury explains the science behind the surprisingly sophisticated and often amusing behaviour of birds, and draws on examples of species from around the world. In The Bird Detective, Stutchbury, a finalist for the Governor General’s Award for Silence of the Songbirds, will explain, for instance, why some birds readily divorce their partners, why parents don’t treat their sons and daugh-ters equally, why females sneak copulations with neighboring males, why mothers sometimes desert their babies, and why some adults forego breeding altogether. She writes about the territorial nature of birds and their nesting habits, why certain species prefer to live in large groups and, perhaps most importantly, how birds are being forced by climate change and other pres-sures to change their habits in a fight for their very survival.

Bridget stutchBurysilence of the songBirdshow we are losing the world’s songbirds and what we can do to save them

By some estimates, we have lost half the songbirds that filled the skies only 40 years ago. Bridget Stutchbury, an expert ornithologist and naturalist, convincingly argues that songbirds truly are the canaries in the coal mine—except the coal mine looks a lot like Earth and we are the hapless excavators. Following the birds on their 10,000-kilometre migratory journey, Stutchbury looks at the most threatening factors: pesticides, the destruc-tion of vital habitat, coffee plantations, the bright lights and structures in our cities, and global warming. Without songbirds, our forests face insect infestations, and our trees, flowers and gardens lose a crucial element in their reproductive cycle.

In award-winning author Trevor Herriot’s remarkable new work, he draws on 20 years’ experience as an observer of nature to reveal the spirit of the grassland world, and the uniqueness of its birds.

In the spirit of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and Bruce Chatwin’s The Songlines, this arresting book fills the heart with wonder and reveals that any hope for the endangered wildness in North America’s heartland depends on people making the right choices—on farms, in legislatures and in board rooms, and even at the supermarket. Beautifully illustrated with the author’s own draw-ings, Grass, Sky, Song awakens our senses to the glory of all birds and calls for a renewed bond between culture and nature.

What Gretta Vosper proposes in the provocative With or Without God is a radical change that lies at the heart of faith. The new church she envisions will play a viable and transformative role in the shaping of a future society. What will save the church from certain demise, Vosper argues, is a new emphasis on just and compassionate living. Without this reform, the church as we know it faces extinction.

In the vein of Tom Harpur’s The Pagan Christ, this is a book that dares to discard old doctrines but does so with respect and dignity. Vosper imag-ines a new church that leads in ethics—fostering relationships, meaning and values that are solidly rooted in our own best selves.

Jean Vanier is the founder of the international L’Arche communities, and of Faith and Light, two organizations that bring together people with develop-mental disabilities and the friends who share their lives. He espouses a phi-losophy that the marginalized and weak can teach us great things and that true spirituality can only come from our relationships with the less fortunate. Vanier has travelled the world, meeting with international dignitaries and faith leaders, and with people who have nothing—as well as everything—to give. Our Life Together contains over four decades of Vanier’s correspon-dence, as he reflects on world events and the quest for peace; and on his own faith journey and current drive for interfaith dialogue. Our Life Together reads much like a memoir: inspirational, infused with a sense of community, and revealing in its candid portrait of a man who fully understands what it is to be a whole, compassionate human being.

One morning in 2001, Howard Engel, prolific novelist and literary per-sonality, walked out his door to pick up his newspaper and found that he could no longer read. He had had a stroke and now suffered from a condi-tion called alexia—he could still write, he could no longer read. As soon as he committed a word to the page, it appeared to him to be in some kind of alien cipher. After much therapy and the support of his family, Engel has returned to writing the Benny Cooperman novels that have made him so widely adored among mystery fans. This book is about that struggle to reinvent himself as a writer, a powerful memoir of one man’s triumph over a rare, ironic affliction.

From his illegitimate beginnings in a small Scottish town, to his regal posi-tion as a business magnate of great power and wealth and the dynamic head of a company that stretched over 1/12 of the earth’s surface, Sir George Simpson epitomized the self-made man of the 19th century. As he ranged fearlessly across his “empire of furs,” Simpson set speed and endurance records for overland travel that have yet to beaten. His forceful moves into the Pacific Northwest trade and political turmoil over boundaries did much to consolidate British power on the west coast of North America. Raffan brings this rambunctious character to vivid life and creates a lively, richly documented portrait of one of the world’s greatest business empires that flourished before Canada was completed as a country and that became a potent symbol of northern enterprise.

Forget your dinner jacket and put on your lab coat: you have to be a nutri-tional scientist these days before you sit down to eat—which is why we need Dr. Joe Schwarcz, the expert who’s famous for connecting chemistry to everyday life. In An Apple a Day, he’s taken his thorough knowledge of food chemistry, applied it to today’s top food fears, trends and questions, and leavened it with his trademark lighthearted approach. The result is both an entertaining revelation of the miracles of science happening in our bodies every time we bite into a morsel of food, and a telling exploration of the myths, claims and misconceptions surrounding our obsession with diets, nutrition and weight.

Joseph heath and andrew potterthe reBel sellwhy the culture can’t Be Jammed

Perhaps the most enduring legacy of the 1960s is the widely held belief that modern society as a whole is a giant system of conformity and repression. In order to rebel, it is not enough to fight against the power of some specific social class or institution, rather it is necessary to reject “the system” as a whole: the entire culture must be resisted and a counterculture must be formed. For Heath and Potter there is only one problem: the idea is a myth.

Jeffrey s. rosenthalstruck By lightning

Humans have always been fascinated and frightened by randomness, and inexplicably delighted by strange coincidences. We resent the feeling that circumstances are out of our hands. In cogent, often humorous prose, Rosenthal shows us that once we understand the rudiments of probability we will no longer scramble to lock our doors every time the newspaper headlines shout that burglary rates are on the rise. And maybe—just maybe—we’ll finally realize that despite a run of good luck at the casino, the house always wins. What are the odds of that?

“Writing in funny, easily understandable language aimed at non-mathemati-cians, [Rosenthal] shows how understanding the odds can give us a better idea of how the world works, and help us make better decisions about our lives . . .” —The Globe and Mail

marc lewis Ph.D., and isaBela granic Ph.D., are develop-mental psychologists as well as the parents of twins. Dr. Granic is a research scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children. Dr. Lewis is a professor in the department of human development and applied psychology at the University of Toronto. Together, they have been guests on international public radio programs, spoken at international academic conferences and given educational seminars and workshops to parents and clinicians around the world. Lewis, Granic and their children live in Toronto.

A newborn typically deprives parents of 400 to 750 hours of sleep in the first year of its life. It’s hardly surprising that sleep and sleep-training is the #1 issue faced by new parents. Many mothers and fathers wrestle with the overwhelming number of sleep-training methods offered to them, from the “cry-it-out” techniques to the gentler “no-cry” approaches. But there are no scientific studies that prove one method is superior to any other. Lewis and Granic, however, have uncovered astonishing research and crucial informa-tion about sleep-training babies: the most critical factor is when you start the process. Timing is everything.

Bed Timing walks you through the stages of your child’s development up to the age of four, revealing the windows during which sleep-training is most effective—and when it stands the least chance of success. With this knowledge, you can decide when and how to teach your child to sleep through the night. The Ferber method, for example, is appropriate for the five-to-seven-month stage, when infants are emotionally resilient, but it is potentially disastrous in the eight-to-twelve-month stage, when they develop separation distress. Filled with practical advice on the top five sleep-training methods and instructions for dealing with sleep setbacks, Bed Timing is a simple, sensible and reassuring guide to help your child—and yourself—get to sleep.

Breastfeeding is healthy and natural, but it’s not always easy. Dr. Jack Newman, a leading authority on infant care, and Teresa Pitman, former executive director of La Leche League Canada, have the answers that many new mothers are looking for. From achieving a good “latch” to dealing with jaundiced or colicky babies to coping with breast pain and surgeries, Dr. Jack Newman’s Guide to Breastfeeding includes information on every ques-tion a nursing mother could have.

If you’re expecting, nursing your newborn or wondering about when to wean your toddler, this is the guide you need, for your first baby or your fourth.

“Everything you wanted to know about breastfeeding . . .” — Lamaze International

Keith Richards and George Bernard Shaw were both damaged when they fell from trees. Prince Philip, husband of the Queen of England, and John Holmes, the star of over 2,000 pornographic movies, were both born on the kitchen table: different tables in different kitchens, it’s true. But nonethe-less: what does it mean? What famous composer autopsied in a tool shed? What was the name of the woman who invented the dishwasher in a tool shed? When did Mr. Harley and Mr. Davidson invent their motorcycle in a tool shed and what do they have to do with Pamela Anderson, anyway? And what, what, what does it mean when you put it all together?

Whether you labour over these pages or whether you read them in quick and easy spurts, this is a book that will make you want to skip to the loo, my darling. Let the private sanctum of the bathroom become for you, as it has become for Old Father William, a place as much about making sense as making scents.

lewis desoto was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and has lived in Canada since the 1960s. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Masters in Fine Arts. His first novel, A Blade of Grass, established him as one of Canada’s writers to watch and brought him international acclaim, selling in 15 countries and in many languages, and receiving multiple award nomina-tions, including a Booker long-listing. He has also published a biography of Emily Carr. An accomplished painter, he lives in Toronto and in Normandy with his wife, artist Gunilla Josephson.

When a young music student named Solveig comes to Paris from Sweden to study classical music, she meets two men who will change her life: Jasper, a seductive musician who plays le jazz hot in nightclubs; and Lucas, a sensitive painter who has experienced a profound loss. The novel moves effortlessly from the bohemian streets of the city to the lush fields of a small island off the coast of Britanny as DeSoto explores the ways in which loss and hurt can shape a life and the ways in which love and art can, perhaps, redeem it.

Lewis DeSoto brings an artist’s eye and a novelist’s craft to this evocative story, demonstrating once again why he is one of our most gifted writers of fiction.

Praise for A BLADE OF GRASS

“The author writes evocatively . . . about a wild and natural country that seems both authentic and tragic.”

—The Vancouver Sun

A dedicated follower of fashion and everything chic, she is quickly smitten by all that New York has to offer. Her dreams of glamour begin to fizzle, however, when she is faced with the hard realities of her profession. The pressure of billable hours, the incessant demands of her hard-nosed superiors, the conspiracies of two malicious secretaries, and the advances of a lecherous client prompt her to question her career choice.

Then Catherine meets Jeffrey Richardson, a wealthy client of Edwards & White, and her New York life takes on the glamour she’d hoped it would— the shopping, the spas, the limos and parties. Until an unethical request forces her to reevaluate the high-flying world she thought she always wanted. In the spirit of The Devil Wears Prada or The Nanny Diaries, J’adore Dior is a smart, funny tale of greed, glamour and the pursuit of a corner office.

A mysterious man wearing clogs, a cardigan and a menacing glare makes Ravi a proposition: an up-and-coming starlet need polishing – will Ravi babysit her à la Eliza Doolittle in dull Toronto until she learns to shine? Ravi agrees to do the job but soon learns there is more to this starlet than meets the eye. She has a secret as juicy as they come – but there are repercussions for letting the cat out of the bag. Because Ravi has his own secrets to keep, he knows better than anyone what loose lips can do. Will he resist temptation and avoid revealing the biggest of scoops? She wasn’t looking for love. As a successful writer with an established career, a comfortable home and a supportive group of friends, her life was full. But then, 30 years after he broke her heart the first time, he walked into a book signing and back into her life. Spurred on by the idyll of a first love made good, they reconnect through emails—he is smitten; she is enthralled.

But, strangely, love has left her with a nasty case of writer’s block. Then, in a surprising and wickedly delicious resolution, she recognizes that in a “he said, she said” story, the writer always gets the last word.

At A Loss For Words is another brilliant expression of Diane Schoemperlen’s gift for building the minutiae of everyday life into a pro-found understanding of women, men, love and imagination.

Joel thomas hynesdown to the dirt

Somewhere between Hold Fast and Trainspotting, there is a crevice for Keith Kavanagh, the turbulent central character of Down to the Dirt. With gritty accounts of sexual depravity, pyromania, abortion as a means of birth control, and the botched mercy killing of a poisoned cat, this dark and comic novel charts the escapades of Keith coming of age in small town Newfoundland. Hynes has created an unforgettable character in Keith Kavanagh and has exquisitely captured both the child’s and the man’s rage and despair. Wild and belligerent, yet vulnerable and lost, Kavanagh evokes our sympathy. Down to the Dirt is the winner of the Percy Janes First Novel Award and was shortlisted for the Winterset Award.
